  • After being stored in a stone barn all year it was time to give an old classic International a Sunday run-out to blow off the cobwebs. After connecting a new battery and with some fresh fuel and oil this early 1966 McCormick-International 434 in really nice original condition for its 57 years of age started on the button and with not a hint of smoke ran sweet as a nut along the mile or so trip from the barn to the farm yard where it would later get treated to a good service.
    Filmed in Cumbria July 2023.

I was thinking along the same lines Dan. Nice to see it’s not been messed about with or ended up as a scraper tractor as unfortunately many in the past have. Cheers, David.

It does look and sound well Des, really straight considering it’s knocking on 60 years old and very original. I’m not sure if the owner is the first one, I’ve a feeling they’re the second though and don’t think it’s traveled too far since being supplied by Rickerby. Those black/ silver plates could certainly be originals though. Cheers David.

Now that 1966 McCormick-International 434 brought a smile to my face David and although an old classic, shes younger than me and I can say moves a lot better than me too! Engine sounds great and as you say runs really clean too and must say for her age the tin work looks pretty straight. Never had many dealings with International, but we bought a 1974 International 475 as a fill in for the season back in 1981 until a new tractor order was fulfilled and she was supposed to go once the new one arrived, but she was so good that we kept her I think about 3 years and never missed a beat, but by that time we were needing bigger tractors. Got to say seeing this video has really put me in the mood for buying an old classic again as I used to have an old Dexta and someone once offered me silly money and I sold it which was a mistake. Thanks for the Video David.

Thank you Fraser. Now you mention it the 434 is younger than me by a couple of years so I’m giving my age away though luckily I’m still pretty mobile to get myself around the fields with my camera! It is indeed running well and hasn’t been abused. Now that’s a coincidence you mention a 475 as this farm also owns a International 475 as well as an IH 885XL, Case 956XL & 844XL plus a John Deere 6610 making up a lovely classic fleet that you’ve kindly commented about on my previous videos I’ve posted this year.. Yes ultimately tractors & machinery do tend to increase in size over the years, I remember 30 years ago when a 100hp tractor was a big machine in Cumbria, it’s more than double that now! Would like a nice classic myself but they’re long away from my budget nowadays, should have bit the bullet 10 years ago! Thanks again Fraser, your great insight and comments are always welcome. Cheers David

Out of curiosity Fraser was it a blue/ orange Dexta you owned or a blue/ grey New Performance mode? Both great tractors.

@@davidwinthrop7077 Thank you David for your very kind comment and appreciation. I have very few regrets in life but I do miss the farming life of my younger years which is why I have always chosen to live in the farming community. Life opportunities allowed me to make other choices which gave me a great career and allowed me to also have my own businesses, but since I lost my wife and also retired, I have found great enjoyment following the farming community on RUclips, which allows me to keep in touch with farming. Although I watch many variations of farming across the world, I have never really been one for commenting on videos, but with your own channel I have always felt a close bond and hence my communications with yourself. You have created a channel which gives me great enjoyment, and I really do enjoy our chats, so I thank you very much for that.

@@davidwinthrop7077 Just me again David, yes it was the blue & orange Dexta. Bought it at a local farm Roup as a non runner with the intention of my son and I restoring it. Got it up and running but never finished the restoration due to business commitments and my son being at that age where cars were more interesting to him, hence letting it go when I got the offer. Both my son and I have commented a few times that we wish we still had it, but that's life.

It certainly often is the case! Thank you Fraser, I’m so pleased you enjoy my videos and I also very much enjoy our chats. Like you I have very few regrets in life (as Sinatra sang ‘Too few to mention) though I’ve made a few mistakes, that’s part of life but they’re forgotten about now and happily well in the past! Yes you’ve got to grab opportunities by the horns and make the most of them. Sadly things like losing a partner are inevitable, I’d be lost without my better half, for a start I’d miss her wonderful meals, if the cooking was down to me we’d be living on beans on toast! While we may not be financially well off we enjoy each other’s company, have lots of laughs and have our health which is much more important to us. RUclips is such a great channel, I listen to a lot of music having been a drummer for almost 50 years which as well as my photography has played a huge part of my life. I’m always grateful and happy to hear from you Fraser, such interesting conversations that are a pleasure to read and reply too. Couple of compilation videos coming up over the winter months as with the shorter days I can’t get out into the fields, hopefully you’ll enjoy them. Best wishes and take care. David.

Beautiful David - a real old-timer! Does she do any work? I'll bet she'd LOVE to do some tedding . . .

It’s a lovely little tractor Alan. Not so much work these days and was the perfect tedding tractor a few years ago until a bigger and heavier model arrived at the farm. Rested now but nice to have in the ranks though. Cheers, David.

At least it’s still going after 57 years Rob but wonder how many of the newer McCormicks or come to think of it any tractor built in the last 10 years!
