I ended up purchasing over 250 yards of fabric from a store that was closing, over 8 years ago. Even today, I'm still finding uses for it. My Best Buy ever.

I don't think that buying 180 yards of fabric is odd. It's what I'd expect a passionate sewer & designer to do.
Those beautiful fabrics were seriously discounted & I'm happy that you took advantage of the opportunity (& even happier that you shared it with us)!

I mean, this is your job. Not just a little hobby. So it makes sense to get things when they are at a cheap price. It's the nature of your work that you know you're going to use them. It's not like if someone just went to the store and got excited and spent a bunch of money and then lost their interest in that hobby so the fabric and money goes to waste. You're going to keep doing this. You're just self-employed. I don't think it was ridiculous at all.

      Mandy Olorenshaw
      Yes, that’s what I thought!
I get not wanting to give in to ‚hoarding‘, but with the amounts of fabric she needs for those dresses, buying at reduced prices is a great business investment.

    • @Stettafire
      @Stettafire 3 года назад +1

@@raraavis7782 Also I think folk overuse the word "hording". Hording is a serious symptom of a serious mental illness. It's not just having lots of stuff, it's collating stuff until the stuff has a serious negative impact on your life. More so then a house being just messy or just "cluttered" but literally not being able to open doors and stuff. I hate how folk are like "well if you're not a minimalist you're definetly a hoarder!" That's an extreamly toxic attitude to have

    • @raraavis7782
      @raraavis7782 3 года назад

      @@Stettafire
Well yeah. That's why I put the word in parentheses. To differentiate between the colloquial use of the word and it's clinical meaning.
Parentheses can be used for that, not just for quoting.
So maybe make sure, the error/misunderstanding isn't actually on your side, before you call someone 'toxic'.

When you give the names of the fabrics, and you’re handling the fabrics, which shows us the Drape, It really helps a lot if you’ve never seen or handle that what kind of material. For me I love your fabric halls. Not every store has this type of material. That way when you go to the Internet and looking for you have a better idea. Thank you. Enjoyed it immensely I think you made some very good purchases. Remember there is a lot of us out here watching you, seeing how you’re doing and improving. We are proud of you.

The longer I listened to you the more you sounded like my younger self. I used to design and make theatre costumes. By design, I mean make them Read from the furthest seat from the stage. I would drape the fabric on a dress dummy and go to that seat to see if the richness would show up at that seat. A helper on stage would drape and re-drape the combination until it was right. Yes this was before everyone had computers and photos helped very little. I love your creative mind and your ideas. The fabrics are wonderful and life is short so enjoy what makes you happy. Thanks for sharing your fabric haul.

Angela, I admire your version of material insanity. Why? Because I do the exact same thing! The word SALE is a dangerous word on a window display in a fabric store...beware! I am so happy for your good fortune. I am smiling so hard that my cheeks are aching. Lol. Fantastic haul. I adore the black mesh. O my gosh! $20.00 is just insane. Thank you.

Glad you filmed this. :) I love living vicariously through other people's fabrics, especially those jacquards. *-*
And hopefully this is helpful and not irritating - Toile is pronounced more like 'twal' than 'toil'. Same as 'voile', as they're both French words. Though I hear that one pronounced as 'voil' fairly regularly in the garment district so ymmv.

You shouldn't need to feel you have to apologise or down play your fabric purchases and I do hope no one gives you grief for them. I really enjoyed watching this fabric haul and the more the merrier! It also doesn't matter to me what you pay for the fabric I just loved seeing them and hearing your descriptions and musing what you could use them for. I look forward to watching more. Carol in UK

My husband and I went on a little shopping spree for fabric about a week ago. He is making a top hat and a fur trimmed cloak. I got some Halloween fabric for a few quilting projects to finish. I also got 5 yards of muslin to make a chemise to go under a Scottish outfit I am making for a Renaissance fair. Love the last set of fabric that you showed. Very pretty.

Yellow, a colour which looks horrible on 95% of people, suits you stunningly!
Also, I get why you bought the fabrics. I mean, if you store it correctly, it doesn't rot ever. You sew a lot, so you will use it up eventually, and until them you don't have to buy new stuff
Edit: after watching the whole video-holy cow, are those fabrics beautiful! Can't wait to see you sewing with them

i LIKE that you took advantage of the store closing reduced prices and stocked up. I did the same thing about 5 years ago and added those to my, I thought, much to large stash. For the next 3 years the only fabrics I bought were little bits I needed for decorative purposes. I bought fabrics I normally wouldn't have because they are just to expensive. My wardrobe exploded with the most gorgeous pieces made from my treasure haul. I've never once regretted my unplanned haul. I don't think you will either. you picked up gorgeous fabrics.

I love these type of fabrics...but I mainly sew regular modern clothes, so I can rarely justify buying silks or brocades and have to vicariously live through people like you! Thanks for sharing your haul in such detail.
I‘m looking particularly forward to the men’s ensemble you mentioned...I love historical men’s fashion and if I would do any costuming, I would probably dress up as a man, lol. I‘m tall with an athletic built, so suits tend to look much better on me than dresses.
I have even considered adapting a 19th century men’s ensemble to my measurements and a slightly more contemporary look and to actually wear it as normal clothes.

You have made wonderful fabric choices. I do love fabric hauls. Do not feel guilty about buying so much fabric, this is your career/education. Most of us don't have the opportunity to wear such beautiful fashions. I saw this motto from a Threads Magazine reader, "I am not a fabricaholic, I am the curator of an extensive privately owned collection of textiles." Julie Jahns statement is very appropriate for us "curators." Have you ever heard of a man who tries to rationalize his purchase of a boat or other "toy? Never !

I love these videos, I just like to look at all the fabrics and imagine things they could be, and I totally get splurging with fabric. I recently bought myself fabric to make an 18th century robe a la'anglaise and I picked a medium weight sort of wine colored poly satin for the contrasting underskirt and this absolutely gorgeous cotton for the main dress. it's cream colored with lots of little dark pink and wine colored flowers with olive green leaves and little light blue flower sprigs to give it more interest. it was $11 a yard which is way more than I would normally spend for cotton but it was just so beautiful and so very 18th century I couldn't help myself

I have a Folkwear pattern I bought many years ago labeled "Armistice Blouse" which I would love to make up in something like the white textured cotton. Although I see many beautiful period costumes made up in dazzling fabrics, I am interested in seeing clothes the common woman and man would wear in the 1200's thru 1600's. You are motivating me to take a trip down to the fabric district. Over the years so many of my favorite stores like Paron's have closed but the garment district is still a fantastic place to shop for unusual and reasonably priced fabrics.

Angela, this silk taffeta is exactly the color and changeable fabric I had a dress made up from in 1953. I was looking up the photo of myself in that dress to send to you, but then I remembered that the photo was in black and white so you couldn’t have seen the color(s) at all. It looks though a twin to that taffeta you show in your blog, and that was made over 65 years ago.

I just came across your video and was fascinated by the fabrics you purchased; they are positively beautiful! I am not at all familiar with your vlog style, but think it would be awesome to see a follow-up video, showing what you ended up doing with your haul.
I made a massive fabric purchase not too very long ago, which I believe set the record for a non-retail purchase of fabric; insanity really. I ran across an ad from a gal looking to quickly sell her fabric stash, due to an unplanned move. She had a sewing business, plus had her own personal stash. I came home with five pickup loads of fabric. Most of this was not on bolts; they were on the forklift-sized rolls that come straight off the production line, prior to be cutting down to bolt sizes. Each one took two people, and some considerable effort to lift and carry. The first three loads were heavy cotton knit, something like a heavy t-shirt knit, and the matching rolls of ribbing, in each color. There were also rolls of canvas (for tablecloths, grocery bags, etc.), and rip-stop nylon, flannel, and even the sheer drapey stretchy fabrics that would make beautiful nightgowns or other flowing garments. Each mammoth roll of fabric was a mere $10. But it didn't stop there. After paying for $120 worth, she started bringing out her own fabric stash, and packing it in the passenger compartment of my pickup., and not charging me for it, since she had found someone who was quite interested in her wares.
Since then, I have made robes and PJ's for all of the ladies at our local nursing home as gifts, as well as having used the knit as quit batting, because it works positively fantastic.
Shortly after that encounter, I ran across another ad, from a woman who was helping a friend "destash". She was selling quilting cottons for $2/pound. Her basement was full. She explained that her friend had a little bit of a buying obsession, and needed to recover some of the money she had spent on fabric. I ended up with about 200 pounds of fabric from that purchase; most of it was the stuff that I would only dream of, since the prices were usually outside of my budget. This fabric I have shared with my quilting club, where we make "blocks of love" quilts to share with the community, to gift to anyone who is experiencing an illness, loss or other life hardship.
The last event was the day I received my ham radio operator's license; my first radio contact was to an elderly gentleman who lived about an hour away from me. I had got on the radio to ask if there were any fellow sewing enthusiasts out there. This gentleman came back and asked me to come over to his house, which I did. There he showed me his late wife's sewing stash. He said that it had set in a part of the house that he could not visit due to his overwhelming loss, and asked if I would be able to use it. Absolutely! So we loaded it up in my car, to the point where it was almost dangerous to drive, because of my fabric "passenger". I took it to my sewing club, where we have been making items to give away in our community. He unfortunately passed away just a few days later, so I didn't even get a chance to send a thank-you card, but we had a wonderful day, visiting and sharing similar interests.
Needless to say, I don't have any reason to visit a fabric store, and enjoy the daylights out of guiltlessly creating and sharing with others; guiltless, because I'm not spending my life savings to make things to give away, and can experience the joy of giving to others.
Enjoy your incredibly beautiful new fabrics; you picked some very beautiful pieces!!!

Love the fabric pair at 13:33. Your planned use for them is what first came to mind when I saw them, so I hope you make that outfit soon.

I know nothing about fabrics or their backstory of where they are from and watching your channel makes me more aware of all of this thank you!!!

I absolutely love your channel! I’m new to fashion design and don’t fully understand fabrics and what they are best used for. Could you possibly do a video explaining fabrics, if they are knit/woven and what they are best used for?
Either way I love your channel and have learnt a lot so far ❤️

Can't wait to see what you make with it all!!! I've never sewn anything before, but I'm dying to learn. I'm planning to start with an easy apron pattern. :)

I am enjoying these videos. They are helping me look at my fabric differently. I love to sew but often have trouble pairing the fabrics.

I really enjoyed myself. I grew up in a formal wear store, and this brought back so many memories, especially those two-toned fabrics. I didn't realize they were still in fashion. Or did they come back around? When I got married in 1992, I had the most amazing copper and black two toned dress with a black velvet top picked out but by the time we went to order them, they had discontinued them. I am glad to see those fabrics again, they always looked so pretty, but they also felt so regal and sounded so fun with the way they rustled when you walked.

I love the stash, I used to do that, now I live in an apartment and not enough room. You are not crazy, just tasteful in your choices.

I love these kinds of haul vids, because it also leaves room for us to imagine what we would make out of them... I might have bought some of the stripey fabric and the more uni silks. But I have a question for you: have you ever went to have color analyses done for yourself? You know, where they sit you in front of a mirror, no makeup - hair pulled back - and put two different fabrics over your shoulders to see which of the two makes you look best? You end up with a color swatch you can take in your handbag - and you never have to doubt that a color will make you look good. And no - online testing does not work, you actually have to see it for your self

I would honestly love a video (or series) where you explain the different fabrics. It would be awesome to see how they drape and how they are commonly used.

the question you ask yourself when you do find this kind of sale situation is "If I go home without it, will I regret it?" If you say yes, you buy it. If you say yes and don't, 20 years later you still remember the one thing you DIDN'T buy! Great purchases.

I love your enthusiasm for fabric, my eyes light up when I see masses of fat quarter bundles in my local hobby craft shop, I even bought some even though arthritis in my hands stops me from using them.

You are so creative and skilled. I can't wait to see the many wonderful and beautiful things that you will make with this fabric. I wonder if there are silhouettes from the 1920s that would be more flattering than the stereotypical flapper type dresses. (I think you had to be a certain kind of waif to wear the popular stuff, but clearly, there are many of us who are not and that must have also been the case then, too!) Some inspiration might be found in the many films made in the 1920s (with costumes designed for the actresses of that era) that might offer a different perspective from books about fashion.

All those beautiful fabrics but that raisin color with the mauve lacy beading was so unusual. I would never look for such a color combination and then I see this.. wow, so gorgeous in a sophisticated unique way! They were all beautiful though, quite the haul.

The brocade reminds me of a fitted 1950's sleeveless dress and a short jacked ensemble my mom had. It was in a blue & green combo. She had a netted billbox hat that matched. Classy.

you know what they say. "She who dies with the most fabric wins". I totally get it. Due to an unexpected small windfall I currently have enough fabric for projects to last at least a year. Since my daughter only wears skirts and she is "Gothic" this is my main time to shop for her while all the Halloween fabric is out. So while I have no need to get more fabric I still find myself at the store looking for things she might like.
