I saw Professor Charlap with my younger son in early 2020, just before the lockdowns. He performed with Jon Faddis - just a duo. I tell you - it was mind-blowing. And we got a chance to chat with the both of them after the concert at WPU in NJ.
This was a fantastic event. All the finalists should be pleased with how it went. Isaiah J. Thompson was the only one I'd heard of last year; now all five are on my list of pianists to watch. Esteban Castro's progress in particular was remarkable to behold. One bit of advice to organizers: In future, the final night should be organized so the winning pianist gets a chance to speak to the audience.
Congrats Isaiah and to all the amazingly gifted finalists.

Based on last night I thought Esteban was the winner but 13 months of competition is a lot of performances we never get to hear.
