Two of my essential techniques for playing the fastest lead passages in my performances with Falling in Reverse are alternate picking and economy picking. As the names imply, alternate picking involves alternating between downstrokes and upstrokes, while economy picking entails reducing, or economizing, the amount of pick-hand motion used to perform single-note runs while picking every note.
This month, I'd like to show you some examples of both picking techniques and demonstrate how I integrate them to play a fast three-bar passage from my guitar solo in the song "Goodbye Graceful."

Economy picking seems to makes descending runs a lot easier than alternate picking.
So it's probably good to have both under your belt.

i do agree a bit. I got the general concept because i already knew of the technique but it does seems like he was put on the spot to make a video like this. He had to pause and think about what he was going to say next and about what he could compare it to
Economy picking is when you cross to another string and do NOT alternate because you moved to a string when you could continue the up or down motion from the last string you picked. e.g. try 2 notes per string on 2 strings to contrast alternate and economy. B -> D on B string, then E -> G on E string and repeat. You can do this as both picking methods. Economy is smoother and faster!
He’s talking about directional picking. His first example is pure alternate picking. There’s no sweeping involved.
Directional picking is a rule for when to economy pick vs alternate pick when changing strings. Economy picking is the technique of sweeping though strong changes.
He's 24, he still has some time to improve and is amazing for his age.

How is it even possible to move your hands that fast
It’s all about using the least amount of movements to make a clean and clear note. I practiced sweep picking for almost a year until this insane guitarist joined my old band. He showed me a lot and within 3 months I was playing 3 string arpeggios good enough to play live. The entire year I was practicing wrong so I had to break the bad habits. When I started playing guitar I had it in my mind that if I get lessons I might never find my own sound. If I could do it all over again I would have started lessons on day one. The biggest help for myself was playing with musicians that were much better than myself. It’s hard to find those people but once they see how dedicated you are that will overcome whatever your short comings are.

I like the way Jacky shreds his guitar. I kinda got lost when he was demonstrating because he does it way to fast for me. I think I'll stick to acoustic. Though Jacky is the best guitarist I know that can to do that.

It is not a verifiable fact that there are more JV's than RR's. It IS a verifiable fact, however, that Ronnie has an ego problem. No, I don't know Ronnie, but as people, we perceive others off of their mistakes and accomplishments. In my opinion, his mistakes far outweigh his strong points. If you think differently, it's whatever, but you indulge in being a hypocrite by acting like he's a great person when you don't know him either, then sink your teeth into anyone who disagrees, like a child.

Opinions are subjective. But they are only opinions when there are no verifiable facts available. It is a verifiable fact that there are more JV's out there than RR's. Jacky will tell you Ronnie is the one with the vision.You can like whoever you want. That is your opinion. The only reason you know who Jacky is is bc Ronnie chose him for the band. I like them both. he is talented yes, but in my opinion, he is wasting too much of his talent just to play fast. there are lots of guitarist who could play fast, but don't do it 'cause they wanna sound beautiful, and make solos that fit with songs, not just all shredding and that.

JV has talent, but honestly he's not very melodic at all. Too much about speed. No feel.
Consider this like Paul Gilbert in his Racer X days. Give him time and I'm sure we'll see some bluesy stuff eventually : )
jsowder19 Have a listen to the solos in Falling In Reverses latest album (Just Like You). They're much more melodic than any of the other solos in their previous 2 albums.

jsowder19 Yeah, it's not all out melodic. There are sections where there's speed but he's added slower parts to a lot of the songs which I think is a great move on his part.
