When I managed a McDonald's I had a group of older dudes who'd come in. This guy I absolutely adored was a WW2 vet. He was 81 at the time. Drove dodge ram SRT truck. He hopped in and out of that thing like he was a teenager. Walked tall and straight. When he shook me hand it hurt. This guy was a boss. He never did wanna talk about his experiences.. not for a while anyway. One day I came in on my day off. I saw him. Sat down. We poured some whiskey in our coffees and the stories started flowing. This man went threw hell. It was heartbreaking to hear the pain and horrors he experienced. I don't know how he came back and pulled himself together and ended up being so successful.
You are what are we call an old soul, which is rare. He felt a true connection to you, and a blessing for him to talk about what he experienced. I know it meant a lot to him.
Sometimes is war vets (Vietnam, Lebanon, Somalia) won't discuss our experiences in passing. But under a relaxed atmosphere and a few slugs of alcohol, we may open up. I mean, it's a lot of nail biting bagged to cart around. As for me, I've been writing my autobiography so that future generations of my family can get to know me and the world I lived in in peace and in war. Whether you agree or disagree with the wars we served in, remember that we were young and brave, and somewhat naive in our desire to serve our country in it's time of need.
That's why they called them "The greatest generation "! They fought their asses off, for what? So, people who never served can give it all away? God bless all the vets,who sacrificed so much, so we could live the lives we live!

One afternoon I was at their house and went into the living room. I saw he was reading a book about the soldiers’ experiences in the Civil War. We both like history and we both liked books. I said “Gee (his name), I’m surprised you are reading that type of book given your experiences.” Well he started talking and I was listening and the gates opened. He talked and talked and talked. I listened and listened and listened. I almost peed my pants bcs I did not want to get up and break his outpouring of his experiences. He was calm and almost wistful. He talked for hours. I like to think it was helpful for him. I felt also very honored that he shared his very inner thoughts with me.
My grandfather when he was in Vietnam would tell me all kinds of stories. I didn't fully believe them because they sounded insane. After he died he gave me a book and a box of film that he recorded everything with. The book was photos and the film was videos. Relics.

I love talking to veterans, there is this nice fellow in my apt building who cut his teeth in WW2. Dude has THE BEST stories, dude drove a tank. Vets are the best of us, I thank him every day for his service.

I can only imagine the immense sacrifices you made and the unimaginable hardships you endured during the war. I want you to know that I am deeply moved by your bravery and the courage you showed on the battlefield. My heart goes out to you for all the friends and comrades you lost along the way. Because we are a family bound for life. When we took our oath it was to Protect and Defend the Constitution NOT the government. As most Vet's will tell you our Oath has no Expiration Date.
We have parades here in NY, we even some small parades or flag raising in neighborhoods with war memorials and cemeteries. We should never forget those who fought for us .
The Vietnam vets are the new WW2 vets. They are rapidly aging out and we are all scrambling to document their personal stories and have them show & tell their souvenirs for the explanations and backstories of them. Unfortunately, Agent Orange and such gives these vets serious health issues. The stress of being a young Average Joe plucked out of your house, sent to swampy hell, and then ending up returning home to people who hated you for something you had no control over drove many many vets to suicide or alcoholism/drug addiction. The health effects of that are plainly evident as well. :( The Boomers, Gen X, and early Millennials were all about WW2 weaponry and history. Now, the 'Nam vets are the fathers and grandfathers of the middle aged and young adult gun owner population and we are all starting to buy up transferable M60s, M14s, M16s, M16A1s, and semiauto reproductions of them as well as uniforms and equipment of the war. Time has forgotten or skipped over the Korean War vets. I'd love an M2 Carbine myself, but then again I'm an enthusiastic Millennial collector. I'd love to have authentic weapons from WW2, Korea, 'Nam, and even into Desert Storm. Maybe a Luger, M1 Garand, and MP40 to accompany my Kar98K, M91/30, 1938 Turkish Mauser, and 1932 M1895 Nagant in the safe. Maybe a transferable triangle handguard M16 or an A1, a GI bringback VC SKS, and a surplus Desert Storm M9. 🤔 NEVER let the memories of your dad fade away, including the stories he's told you over the years. Write them down if you wish. Tell your kids and grandkids if you ever have any. Once the people are gone, all we have left are guns and gear that can't talk. Only the most obvious of things can tell a tale, such as a GI bringback Type 99 Arisaka with a blackened, flame-scorched butt stock that is shallowly burnt up across 1/2 its length on one side. 😓 That rifle speaks loud and clear enough without its previous owner. What a way to go... War is hell, regardless of the era.
What is even crazier is that those MEN and WOMEN fought/fight for an America which is ripping itself apart. This is said with much love and respect from someone who has always admired the patriotism of America. 😢

I remember doing my part by giving a soldier, in one of my many flights, my first class seat. No videos, and no names, he did not want to accept it but he was very cautious with his gala suit (may not be properly naming it) so I wanted to make sure he could enjoy the moment and get proper storage for it. I never said my name nor asked his. I only told him that he would seat closer to the front. Since we both boarded at the same time, once I reached my seat, 1A, I told him, “here!” His face was in disbelief. It was a 4-5 hour flight. All I remember saying was, “enjoy the ride, thank you for your service.” He wasn’t in my connecting flight and there were no more soldiers in uniform. I did the same for others and all I hoped was for them to tell the story about a stranger thanking him for his service.

My great grandfater turned 100 last year. He got his message from the queen and priminister of canada, and because he was part of the skinners horse (a group who fought in ww2 in india) the indian presedent i belive, came to his party. He is turning 101 in august and is currently healthy and looking good! Thank you to everyone who has fought for peace❤

My grandpa was in World War II. He was a doctor. He saved many lives and he escaped from the Germans. He did the hole through the fence with a stick and he got through him and his best friend but he didn’t die and you saved over 90 peoples life and sacrifice his wedding ring, the Germans to make the other people healthy because they were very sick and give them medicine

Visiting our elders is something the whole community should participate in. We should pay them much more respect and gratitude for what they’ve done and been through. Especially veterans. God bless our elders and God bless our vets.
