The origin of the holiday in this episode made me think about how our holiday, Halloween began. People would dress up in costumes to fool the Angel of Death. This epsiode also made Luna my favorite princess. :)
I think Luna is a great character. It makes sense that she doesn't know how to trust, and the comics brought that up brilliantly. Given that all she wants to to be loved by her subjects, to be appreciated by them, what she did during her time as Nightmare Moon makes her feel that she can't even trust or forgive herself, so she's reluctant to accept anyone else would either. We all make mistakes where we feel like we've just completely blown it, and it only adds even more tragic depth to her.
I relate to Luna too, being a younger sister with an older sister who has gotten more stuff done than I have, plus I also have trouble trusting people. But, I believe Luna being doubtful makes sense as it combats Celestia's overwhelming confidence. Also, I think Luna's doubt regarding Twilight in Crystal Empire, shows that she cares for and worries about the safety of all of her pony subjects, including Twilight.
06:30 ...or the word "fun" simply didn't exist during the time before her banishment, meaning that the confusion was only the result of an old and lacking vocabulary.
Very interesting thoughts, DrWolf. I disagree in one point thou. I wouldn't say that Luna was trying to impress citizens of ponyville by appearing during the storm, with a cape made of bats and all... It's more related to who she is and how she's doing things. Apart from being embodiment of dark magic imprisoned on the moon, she always was "The Princess of the Night". It's not only her title, it's her identity. Her personality. Her way of thinking. I can imagine how she doesn't even notice lightnings or clouds when she's angry and her power starts to leek out. And animated spiders and bat-cape? She just can't imagine how it is scary since it is and always have been part of her estetics. The nigth is hers. So are the nighttime creatures, the shadows and the fears of the darkness. I guess she just didn't really hold back since she thought that her powers and presence are fitting to the holiday. She just was TRYING to be herself she thought she was - immortal Princess of the Night in her glory. And only later she learned to be who she really was - Luna.
4:22 -I'd still argue that Pinkie was totally clueless to Luna's issues, especially when it's a holiday meant to be scary. She likely though Luna was in on it. Poor communication kills once more.
4:49 I don't know if Celestia ever used the Royal Canterlot Voice before NMM, but she's definitely used it since then. Check out "Lesson Zero" - when Celestia first appears in the sky over Ponyville and calls Twilight by her full name Celestia uses the RCV to show her displeasure.
Zecora's costume is covered with spiders while she tells the story of Nightmare Moon. Anansi, the god of storytelling in African mythology, is represented by a spider.
you know Doc, I can relate to Luna a lot since I had hard times making friends as well. but I am glad that this episode shows us that Luna can mostly relate to us than the other characters with her being more connected to us. plus with it being Halloween, we can count on Luna to keep any monsters and ghosts away from ruining any fun time in her ngiht. plus she can protect us from nightmares when we sleep.
Awesome review. Very thorough. Interesting points about the holiday and Celestia. You are a great psychologist or psychiatrist. I am happy you also loved this episode. Luna is boss. I think she just forgot how to be a child at heart with the being a princess in ancient times, adopting ancient customs, transforming, being banished, and having a whole sided of her destroyed. Interesting how you tied this episode to the Crystal Empire. I also love how the Pinkie Luna comic followed up on this. Sleepless in Ponyville was also a milestone. Her comic with Discord was a very big step also.
Luna not knowing what fun may actually suggest something about her past and strengthen her reasons for becoming Nightmare Moon in the first place. Perhaps she was like Twilight, not depending on anyone else and just focusing on her studies. Her studies in her case would be her night (and other duties). If all her efforts were ignored then I could relate to her even more. But it's unlike she had no fun times at all, because Twilight still had Shining Armour, and Luna had Celestia (though, Tia may also be distracted by her duties half the time). Luna transforming into Nightmare Moon and being banished to the moon for 1000 years may have wiped her memory of any good times a little bit, or maybe she left them behind in order to become Nightmare Moon. As for future episodes with Luna, I hope we get some, but I haven't an idea for a plot. A slice of life episode including her and Celestia would be interesting, I would like to see what Luna and her sister get up to.
I find Luna an enjoyable character when she shows, ironically for many of the same reason I like Flutter Shy. I really think they should make another Nightmare Night episode, mostly because I want to see how the mane six in a new set costumes and outfits.
7:15- this is my own reasoning for liking some of the most minor characters who make just appear for a few minutes in only a few episodes, what we know of them and what they do can leave even the greatest impression on the viewers like, Derpy, Dr. Whooves, Lyra, Luna, Trixie, Pipsqueak, Sombre, Chrysalis, Soarin', Vinyl Scratch, Octavia, the list goes on and on!
I thought that too the first time I watched, sort of. I'm like whoa neat new guards! their wings are cool, but I bet it's some enchantment to make them look that way. how else do you think Celestia manages to have so many identical looking guards? also remember that "animation error" with the guard in the opening of S3? perhaps there is a spell that makes them all look alike when they're in uniform, when he takes of the helmet his eyes change color
It´s called "the fog of the ages" when immortal beings forget their childhood or other important things. Isn´t usual for a princess, that she has to be formal and strict instead of playing and laughing?
You know, it could have just been a vocabulary issue. Her speech suggests that she speak in early modern English or very late old English. Fun didn't show up until the late 16th Century and it meant "to cheat or trick" (Oxford English Dictionary online), so I can imagine that she'd be very confused by their use of the word.
Probably some part of Luna's character was destroyed when the infection of nightmare was removed from her, that's way we sometimes see her being that awkward. Moreover, she spend 1000 years of banishment, who knows, how much that could influence on her character. As well, you may be right about Luna having no childhood, as the origins of royal sisters are still unknown. Finally, I absolutely agree - this episode is one of the best ones.
I think that it's been just so long, that she doesn't remember much of her childhood. Cause, well, season 4, episode 3. "Though Luna's still a little creeped out, the hall of hooves is still her favorite." Or something along those lines is what Twile-excuse me, Princess Twilight Sparkle-read out of Celestia's diary.
I like Luna's redesign. And I really like her as a character. She's very sympathetic. It doesn't hurt that my first serious introduction to modern MLP was WarpOut's Lullaby for a Princess animation. Her difficulty relating to others makes perfect sense. The last time she did so was a thousand years ago. It's amazing modern ponies and her can actually communicate. If you traveled back a thousand years in the real world and tried to speak to someone who spoke English it'd be virtually impossible to converse. Her unfamiliarity with fun is understandable as well. Her childhood probably happened under Discord's reign. Considering that, it's amazing that she didn't react to the suggestion of fun with violence, if all she knew of it was Discord's version. Futtershy's reaction was understandable, if unfortunate. Pinkie's reaction was very insensitive and did not help things at all. Applejack on the other hand was her level-headed self and very helpful. We barely saw Rainbow (who also wasn't helpful), and didn't see Rarity at all. Rarity in particular could have helped, since she'd likely have fallen back on her manners, which would have given Luna a bit of normalcy. All in all, a great episode and a good re-introduction to Luna.
Happy Halloween Everyone and everypony! I hope you all have a fun halloween! oh and if you see Princess Luna, be sure to show her kindness and try to be her friend since Nightmare night or Halloween as we call it, is a special day. espacially since its when Luna can come out to have more fun with us that night.
I think she simply forgot about fun from her time away. I read the Diary of the Two Sisters as while back and it was made very clear that of the two, Luna was the most playful. She designed most of the traps and secret passage ways in the old castle and would often prank other ponies for the heck of it. She also befriended a manticore that helped them to build the castle and made first contact with a tribe of zebras living in the deep reaches of the Everfree forest. Also, going back to the season 4 premier, we can also see that she is the one carrying the Element of Laughter.
This is one of my fav episodes jn mlp, since I can relate a lot with luna. But also I'd like to mention that Luna used to be nighmare moon. In other word, maybe most of the ponies still fear her. The fact of being soo evil may have indeed affect they way others think of Luna. For example, knowing someone who has been in prison for a long time and been released may cause alil intimidation. But this episode shows also if you have a bad past doesn't mean you cant have a good future.
until we found out I had asbergase at 13 I had but one friend and acording to her I used to bully her. I relate to Luna and this episode Becuse I've always struggled making friends I hAve so few when others have so many, online I feel more loved by my friends then in real life Becuse I have more there but that wasn't until after the age of 13 when I found the internet. so I can really relate to this episode and luna.
I think that Luna dabbled with black/dark magic as a filly that transformed her into Nightmare Moon and she was banished to the moon as punishment. In this episode, I just wish they hadn't cut out Luna's interaction with Rarity. Generosity is just as important as the other elements. Happy Halloween, y'all!
At the same time, she's a princess and she knows it. It makes the bombastic aspects of her all the more believable. Without them she's Trixie, a gifted showboat who doesn't get that showboating might not ingratiate yourself with others all that well. But with the princess aspect, it makes sense for her to be overly grandiose. She's supposed to be ruling thousands, possibly millions, and that's an ego-booster if ever there is one!
maybe Zecora's green dust is a lot like the 'magic' the Shadow Man uses in The Princess and the Frog. He to was able to create illusions & mirages with a sweep of his hand. As I recall, he uses dust in one scene when talking to his friends on the other side. maybe Zecora is in a way,the "shadow man" of the pony world, but benign rather than malignant. Hey, they even have similar "creepy" masks in their homes 4:47 Lesson Zero: "TWILIGHT SPARKLE!" sounded kinda echoey, royal Canterlot voice maybe?
My theory is that it wasn't originally "Nightmare Night" it was more of a mourning Luna's fall, but over the years people started telling stories as part of it, and it continued for years, and by the time Celestia realised what was happeneing it was part of tradition and she didn't want to ruin it for them. Which is why it has Luna depicted as bad as she is, similar to any folklore, someone got villified
As for the thing with her not knowing what fun is, I don't think it's that she's completely ignorant of fun. I like to imagine that she did play and laugh when she was young. I picture her dancing and singing in her night, perhaps by herself but still enjoying it, at least early on. But I imagine Celestia and her were raised to be more proper, to be more serious and studious. She had fun, but it wasn't a public thing and she never learned how to share it with others. It was her unwinding.
Spike is dressed as G1 spike. Elaborating though, I really like Luna as a character because to me she reminds me of Hecate. Being a witch and being more inclined to research various gods/goddesses, I came across Hecate a while back. In her origins, Luna was a very benevolent pony that eventually became associated with bad things and stayed that way for a while until fairly recently, much like Hecate was until the recent uprising in Wicca/Neopaganism.
I've always theorized that, the reason Luna doesn't know what fun is, is because they had a different word for it when she was a filly. They purposely have her use some slightly archaic language, so it seems to make sense to me.
My OC is supposed to be the prince of a foreign land. And we know about Saddle Arabia, so it seems the world of Equestria has much more to it than just the continent of Equestria.
Two points, one, I think the problem with Luna's grand entrance had less to do with her personal socal skills and more that she was displaced in time. She even mentioned that her tone, volume and even speech pattern were how the princess addressed their subjects a thousand years ago. Here, it feels like she's trying to get back to some normalcy she had before the banishment. Two, I always assumed that the awful holiday was allowed to continue simply because of Celestia's grief, in later episodes and even some comics, they show how deeply she regretted losing her sister, her only constant other than Philomena. I think there could've been some time post banishment where her depression was so great that she hardly noticed her subjects. I mean, she left the elements of harmony back in the old castle she let rot. Maybe she didn't want to remind herself about any of that, and let herself forget. Maybe made herself forget with or without her knowledge.
Equestria is the land on which all the stories so far have been set, but we know there are others: not just Zecora's home but the Griffons' as well. The Princesses rule Equestria, but do they rule everywhere? You'd think, given that they raise the Sun and the Moon, they'd have global reach, but that's not necessary; the Everfree Forest, for instance, is not under Pony control. In short, I don't think that Zecora had to know of the Princesses before arriving in Equestria.
Princess Luna is very similar to Twilight before Mane 6. Maybe she was an uptight, asocial royalty spending all her time governing in the castle not having fun, & bringing but not experiencing the night with her subjects, which is why she saw them sleeping through her night as neglect. Pinkie was insensitive but IMO that's in character, she's only sensitive to her friends & not to practically strangers, we can also see this the first times she met Twilight & Cranky.
the confusion goes both ways. from what we seen in the show from episode 2 of season1 to episode 4 of season 2 a year had to past by or more. there are hints to what order the episode that show the seasons(this time i mean yearly seasons) Luna is an Alicorn. she could have rapaid aging when needed. so it's possible that she went from a filly age to adult in just a year. That is like meeting a new friend and not seeing them for 20 years all in one year. confusion was bound to happen.
I like the theory that the reason Luna don't recognize the word "fun" is because the term was only coined while she was in exile on the moon. In reality the word "fun" is only around 300 years old, and it's modern meaning (it originally meant fooling others or being a fool) is even younger. Luna talks in Shakespearian English, which predates the word "fun".
I think she forgot fun. We know she has some, again pointing to the Royal Sister Castle but perhaps her resentment went on so long and add her banishment she completely forgot.
Since Rarity didn't get to meet Princess Luna, I'd actually like to see an episode where Rarity insists on spending time with Princess Luna to get to know her. And I personally think that'd made for an interesting episode, to see how the two characters get along.
@LostInNumbers. But it doesn't mean that the writers won't look into them or even write a story about these guys. Yes, they can be a costumed illusion however there is still a chance that they exist.
You should do a video on which allegiance the characters of the MLP show would choose. Neutral, Lunar Alliance, or the Celestia one. I am personally part of the Lunar Alliance, so the name of Celestia's one really evades me right now. LOL. I think it would be interesting to see what you think up. And maybe you could even include some of the choices of the background characters? Like Trixie, Big Mac, or Princess Cadence, though she is not really a background character in the same sense as say, Derpy or Lyra.
I'm sorry about this being off topic but I would like you to consider of having a whole episode dedicated to "Bat Ponies" i just really love these types the most because their unique and they seem to have a huge background surrounding them because no one has really touch that topic before or has really bothered to. That's why I'm making my only OC for right now a "Bat-Pony" only because I think this certain type of pony suits me more. I really hope you get the chance to discuss this.
an interesting take on Nightmare Moon and Luna done in ashort story is the fact. Luna never existed till Twilight used the elements. Nightmare Moon was the real her.
In the next few seasons, I'd like to see the Mane Six de-emphasized to allow room to flesh out the Princesses, CMC, Discord, and the plethora of other secondary characters that have so many more interesting stories. Aside from AJ, Fluttershy, and arguably Pinkie, the Mane Six have essentially completed their arcs, and we wouldn't want to beat a dead horse. Fleshing out the world and te lore, however, and bringing other characters to the forefront, there are still a ot of places where MLP can go.
Princess Luna defintely; has great potential for future episodes, For example, the people who feel the needs and wants to fit in with others have gone through more trials and tribulations than people who have always had friends, (that's what I think) Although I'm not going to state any specific rough times that people who relate to Luna have been through, I know a great episode can come from one of those things. And for Pinkie, I thinkshe's a hilarious chicken, heh. Later everybody! /)
I'd like to see Pipsqueak again in future episodes, he doesn't deserve to be just a one-shot character just for a Halloween-related episode, we need to see what he looks like without his pirate costume, what do you think Dr. Wolf (or anyone else reading this comment)?
perhaps Celestia created nightmare night to protect her citizens should she ever return... at that point she was still a danger to herself and others. she values her sister... but she must also protect her people (not that it helped). or she just didn't have control over it. either one really.
Additionally, I would like to suggest that those of you who have never heard of the History of Equestria go check out their RUclips channel. It is very interesting, and it compliments many fan theories, as well as drawing insight from the show itself and helping to explain the history of Equestria. I wish all of you the best time listening to these "podcasts," as they are extremely insightful. Perhaps Dc. Wolf should do an analysis video on them. Just a thought!
I think what ur doing is splended keep up the good work. Also did u notice that spike and twilight have the same skin tone it got my minde wondring more about his time in the egg and what or how did it become a test project for twilight to overcome. And princess candce ad shining armore how come they wern't talked about b4 seasson 2. well sorry for my rant hope it will be oki.
The word 'fun' as we know it is only from the 1700s. In the early part of that century and before it meant a hoax or cheating. It was rarely used for over a century because it was considered 'a low cant word' by at least one respected writer of the time. I'm not sure, but I think that means it was lower class slang. It'd be another century before it came into common usage. So Luna not knowing what it meant and then asking if they were having fun after cheating at a game makes a lot of sense. And indicates that someone on the MLP writing staff is a fan of etymology.
I know this is a bit of an old comment, but it actually didn't! The first recorded use of the word "fun" was in 1727 (only 289 years ago now) (source: www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fun), and it meant to prank or fool someone then. So assuming language evolved at the same rate in-universe in MLP as it did in real life, the word probably didn't exist back when Luna got banished.
CAN YOU DO A MY LITTLE PONY FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC THEORY ABOUT WHERE DID THE POWER PONIES COMIC BOOK GO? P.S MAYBE REWATCH POWER PONIES BEFORE DOING THIS THEORY.
i want to know more on the bat ponys we know so lit on it my only goes of where they come from is Hollow Shades witch is East of Canterlot witch is on the Equestria map
So it's possible she may not have called it fun. She may have called it relaxation. And she certainly would have no experience knowing how to enjoy it with others, as her public interactions were probably of the formal variety, things like the Gala or like her appearance in Snowdrop, where it's all business. And yes, Pinkie's an ass throughout the episode. Cute, goofy, but an ass. I don't think it's intentional, I just think she's oblivious sometimes. She coulda let Luna know to play along
Unfortunately cosplaying history doesn't work very outside of historical recreations and some history buff groups however when you have a historical figure that has become a bit of a legend you are more likely to recognize the person my thoughts turn to seeing people dress up as figures like Einstein
ye-no. no he doesn't. we see him in a corner, then sprint across the screen. hey at least we know he isn't a cyclops. and it means he wasn't just created for Luna Eclipsed. perhaps they'll start to use him more as a cameo
The term "fun" literally did not exist 1000 years ago, that doesn't mean people didn't have fun back then, they just didn't call it that. I think Luna had a childhood (though that might change in season 4) she had fun, but nopony called it that. She's already a really tragic character, just let her have her childhood man.
I can completely identify with Luna in at least one way. I have ALWAYS been VERY socially awkward, and even at the risk of being ridiculed, I'll admit that social awkwardness is so bad that, even though I'm 29-years-old, I am still single...
(These fools have no idea that I have taken control of this user's account on this Halloween night. I must maintain my facade.) Hey, everybody. I am extremely indifferent. "Did you say something, DragoSonicMile?" Ignore me! (Curses. They're onto me.)
The origin of the holiday in this episode made me think about how our holiday, Halloween began. People would dress up in costumes to fool the Angel of Death. This epsiode also made Luna my favorite princess. :)

Shes my favourite too because of how shy, sweet, serious, edgy, and neglected she is

Princess Luna is one of my favorite characters. I love her design and the combination of colors that she is.
5:38 Aww...what a cute pair of Ali-Swans!

Is Zecora somehow related to the pony of shadows?
It´s called "the fog of the ages" when immortal beings forget their childhood or other important things.

until we found out I had asbergase at 13 I had but one friend and acording to her I used to bully her.
Hey, they even have similar "creepy" masks in their homes
4:47 Lesson Zero: "TWILIGHT SPARKLE!" sounded kinda echoey, royal Canterlot voice maybe?
OMG! pony dressed as viking! pause at 1 : 35
Spike is dressed as G1 spike.
My idea of a luna episode is seeing her doing her job as a princess of the night when she have to face a conflict and solve it on her own.
Yeah, like "merriment."
Luna is my favorite character.
Since Rarity didn't get to meet Princess Luna, I'd actually like to see an episode where Rarity insists on spending time with Princess Luna to get to know her. And I personally think that'd made for an interesting episode, to see how the two characters get along.
There really isn't an "official" symbol representing Starswirl. Could be just a Random Magic symbol.
It's been a while since I've seen that episode, does he have any dialogue?
@LostInNumbers. But it doesn't mean that the writers won't look into them or even write a story about these guys. Yes, they can be a costumed illusion however there is still a chance that they exist.
I love this episode cause...well it was my first episode in mlp. And watched the whole series in 5 days :) fun experience.
Luna is best pony
I think there's the possibility that the language has evolved a lot maybe fun while a concept that existed that the words didn't match
Princess Luna defintely; has great potential for future episodes,
For example, the people who feel the needs and wants to fit in with others have gone through more trials and tribulations than people who have always had friends, (that's what I think)
Although I'm not going to state any specific rough times that people who relate to Luna have been through, I know a great episode can come from one of those things.
Doc, it is confirmed by Faust that bat-ponies does exist as servants to Luna.
perhaps Celestia created nightmare night to protect her citizens should she ever return... at that point she was still a danger to herself and others. she values her sister... but she must also protect her people (not that it helped).
or she just didn't have control over it. either one really.
Did you notice that the egg Pinkie drops when she runs scared looks like Spike's egg from Twilight's exam?
+collegecomics18 PINKY IS SPIKE'S MOTHER!!!!!!!!!! She's a dragon-pony!!!!!!
Pinkie's character flaw is that she can't read a situation. I dunno why people are surprised ever time she fails to read one.
Only 8 minutes to talk about the PURE AWESOMENESS of luna eclipsed?
Luna is probably the easiest pony to relate to.
Perhaps the word fun didn't exist a thousand years ago?
I know this is a bit of an old comment, but it actually didn't! The first recorded use of the word "fun" was in 1727 (only 289 years ago now) (source: www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fun), and it meant to prank or fool someone then. So assuming language evolved at the same rate in-universe in MLP as it did in real life, the word probably didn't exist back when Luna got banished.
you should do a colab with Mysterious Mr.Enter
MLP needs a Silmarillion.
In what way ? =P
oh shit i am answering a 3 year old comment
CAN YOU DO A MY LITTLE PONY FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC THEORY ABOUT WHERE DID THE POWER PONIES COMIC BOOK GO? P.S MAYBE REWATCH POWER PONIES BEFORE DOING THIS THEORY.
i want to know more on the bat ponys we know so lit on it my only goes of where they come from is Hollow Shades witch is East of Canterlot witch is on the Equestria map
he was in another episode. and without his pirate costume.
Watch 'Putting Your Hoof Down' again. he's there when Fluttershy is in the market place
It's not cannon, she said it long time after she left the show.
Your video was so interesting tjat i just had to subscribe !
Than you made a smart choice.
Luna is best pony
The term "fun" literally did not exist 1000 years ago, that doesn't mean people didn't have fun back then, they just didn't call it that.
I think Luna had a childhood (though that might change in season 4) she had fun, but nopony called it that.
She's already a really tragic character, just let her have her childhood man.
I can completely identify with Luna in at least one way.
I have ALWAYS been VERY socially awkward, and even at the risk of being ridiculed, I'll admit that social awkwardness is so bad that, even though I'm 29-years-old, I am still single...
the bat ponies are threstles
Ha ha! Good one. A hidden reference to Potter fans everywhere.
Thestrals, you mean.
Friendshipismagic yeah that
so everybody in ponyville has seen death??
HECKproductions
How do you know everypony can see the thestrals?
Nice job :)
I relate to Luna she had problems in public so do I because I have Asperger Syndrome.
this was a good episode of my little pony
5:34 LOL CELESTIA IS A DUCK.
Perhaps she has a short temper now because she hasnt had to hastle with ppl for 1,000 years; she cant deal with what shes not use to
Me on halloween= pinkie pie when she's trick or treating... (give me candy)
he should ;w;
(These fools have no idea that I have taken control of this user's account on this Halloween night. I must maintain my facade.)
Hey, everybody. I am extremely indifferent.
"Did you say something, DragoSonicMile?"
Ignore me!
(Curses. They're onto me.)
Back in the day they probably used the word enjoyment instead of fun. She obviously speaks in an older equestrian.
