@kaveman Aquatics! I have a buddy who doesn't believe in "quarantine tanks." He gets new fish and puts them in his main tank, and medicates the entire tank for about two weeks. In your opinion, is this something that can be successfully done, or should you always quarantine?
Yea buddy, your channel makes people do things 😂. I've had two 210's. One South/central American Tank and one African peacock/Hap tank. Now I'm trying to set up a discus tank lol
I love it!!! And then your saltwater tank will come soon after 😆😆
😅
Have to admit that even after 30 years of keeping freshwater tanks I was terrified of a saltwater setup. Purchased a 15 gallon nano complete setup with the step by step instructions and it was not difficult at all.
Love to hear this! Even a 30 year veteran was intimidated but like most things its just about getting the right info! It can be done! 😁💪
I have been waiting for this…. I have been entertaining the idea of a saltwater tank for about a year now. I want to do this but like you said expensive in the beginning. I have a co worker who went from greasy to salt and he says it all the time it is easier once you get it going. I am ready for your journey…..Got the pop corn ready
Your co-worker is 100% right. The start up is scary but once the wheels start moving it can be smooth and beautiful sailing! 😁💪
Kev...everything you said makes sense. Ive learned alot from you about keeping a freshwater tank and still learning. So excited to learn about keeping a saltwater tank as well! You won't get rid of me for a long time!😂 Appreciate all you do for us!❤❤❤😊
Best news I've heard all week!!! 😁😁😁💪💪💪
@@KaveManAquatics😊❤❤❤
I've been following you for years. I to went to saltwater and I use fluval fx9.
Learning curve for sure but you are spot on. Went through that raising cichlids
Thanks for sticking with me bro! 😁💪
@@KaveManAquatics no doubt!!!
My question has nothing to do with the video but i really need help, since i love ur videos and think you know more than others i need ur help plz..my 110 gallon tank is arriving in ten days, and currently i have a 55gallon tank, i have bought two huge containers and going to do a water change now and fill those containers with my water from current tank, so when the new tank arrives i will put that old water from the containers plus all the water from the 55 gallon tank and use a different filter, that way i wont need to do a 3 week wait recycle,, so are the fish going to be ok? My fish are central american cichlids,, plz help 🙏🙏
Just want to thank you, setting up a 55 gallon Mbuna tank today and your videos are so incredibly helpful.. I’ll be excited to see you dive into saltwater too🤞🏼🙏🏼
My pleasure! Glad you're finding the channel helpful. 😊
BTW, you should check out my new Aquarium Keeping APP designed for beginners! - aquabuildr.com
yeah man you the reason why I went from 10 gal to 55 gal to now 100 gall it is your fault lol so yes I will be following along
Sorry, not sorry! 😆😆
My personal journey with it is il never do it again. My freshwater tanks are almost self sufficient. Salt not so much. It's nice but for me it's not worth it.
Once we get to a certain point I'll be showing how to make many parts of reef keeping automatic. Yes it will require more equipment and more upfront cost, but it will also make your life much easier. Stick with me, maybe I can inspire you to try it again 😁
big fan of your channel and the knowledge you blessed the community with. quick note on the app, it will be nice to have more parameters to enter, like nitrate level, nitrite, also a calendar for maintenance tracking and reminder. Also the report should show historical parameters and fluctuations as they are captured allowing us to compare maintenance schedules and water parameters differences. just a thought 💭
Yes Sir, great minds think a like. All of those suggestions are being implemented as we speak and will be available in the new V3 drop next month! 😁💪
I am assuming you know this but just take us through the same way you did with fresh water slowly and day by day
Yes Sir, that is the plan! 😁💪
Hey man awesome channel where did you get those bamboo ornaments in your 150 gallon?
Thanks bro! All my backgrounds and decor are from aquadecorbackgrounds.com Use code Kaveman10 at checkout for a 10% discount 😊
Cichlids got me into saltwater. I just kept the same practices and it's been super productive. Water changes, maintenance all the same lol. I even run canisters on my 6ft reef.
Only thing I really needed to learn was RO systems, testing, dosing and FLOW AND LIGHTING.
I do miss Cichlids, and will one day go get a dedicated 125 gal I think.
Love it bro! I always said when keeping cichlids we're just one level below saltwater! If you can do that, you can do anything lol Thanks for sharing your experience! 😁💪
You make alot of good points
Thank you bro! 😁
I tried salt water. No thanks. Way too many problems and money spent. And this comes from a guy who kept discus.
Hey Kev, I love your videos, keep up the good work! I had a quick question... I have a 75g african cichlid tank and get bristlenose plecos, and they always gets attacked and killed by my cichlids within a month. I tried a common pleco, and it resulted in the same thing. I was wondering what you recommend to solve this. Thanks.
Oh yes great video, I was actually thinking about it and what was involved in setting one of these tanks up.
Can you please make a video on keeping Jalo Reef Afras please!
I dont have big home to keep more tanks😕 just i kept 5 feet monster tank ,i will buy bigger home soon and keep more tanks 🙂
Never lose your energy brother 💪🏾💪🏾
Never! 😁
What lights are those on your main tanks.
Kev, you're 100% correct.
My story: I got into fish keeping 3 years ago with african cichlids and i watched all your videos on learing about fish keeping! Your videos were always so easy to learn from and is the reason for my success throughout the years in my fish keeping (thank you man!).
1.5 years ago i kinda got a bit bored of my african cichlids and plus doing 80% water changes ever 2nd week (with indoor plants helping to reduce nitratesin my 140gal) got a bit too much in my busy life schedule. So i decided to sell off all my cichlids and switch over to salt water. Best decision I've ever made! Its much more easier. I only do a 20% water change ever month😂 with the help of my chaeto refugium (which unlike a cichlid setup, it actually works!) and i can keep all different kinds of fish together (unlike cichlids which wants to kill each other) and their colors pop waayy much better and stay that way from birth (unlike cichlids) and my wife loves it much better plus the they arnt as messy as freshwater. You can also have clean up crews in your tank that does most of the work for you. I dont run a skimmer (like most people make you think that you have to) because i have a refugium with a cheap ebay grow light that keeps my nitrates down. I get my salt water from the ocean just 20mins away from my house (im in australia, so i dont know how good it would be from usa?). But my setup is actually so cheap that i would say its cheaper than keeping cichlids with all the water changes i had to do. My setup is FOWLR (fish only with live rock) setup at the moment and i will get into corals soon and thats where i will need to get expensive lighting and measuring equipment ect. I find the salt water comunity and lfs to be much more friendlier 😊.
Also side note: I had a 3d background from aqua decor in my cichlid setup and i've still got it going in my salt water setup. Don't know if im the only with a fresh water aqua decor in a salt water setup, but they do work! And ive confirmed with aqua decor.
Excited about this!!!
Me too bro! 😁
Six goldfish came to the house 8 months..I killed them all..*accidently* I didn't know anything about cycling a tank..I cried for 10 days..Then I got 6 more goldfish....Mucky..Cheesepuff..Zataar'..Sunshine..Goldy..and Boo.. They cost $10.00.. but I have spent over $400.00 on Tanks and Food and Snacks and Lights and Filters..and Python's and Seachem everything! Yeah..I don't think I'm ready! 🤣But I will enjoy watching your journey..Have fun!! I do have a question..I've been using test strips..would it maybe be better if I invest in something different to test the water? Invest...Uhg...Diana...STOP!!!🤣
Sorry to hear about those losses. But don’t give up!!! Yes, you should be using the API master test kit instead of those strips.
I highly recommend my beginners playlist, it’ll be very helpful for you 😁 - ruclips.net/p/PLP5OXTIIDO8NYvhUHAmwAd54WFmS4d8er&si=sq0HgK8Dzvb55sQ7
Waddup Jeffrey!
Salt water aquariums are not that hard to maintain so easy a kaveman can do it!!!!! Let’s go!!!!!!
Yes SIRRR, Love that! 😆
Kept a reef tank when trickle sumps first came out.. kept it running for 2 years and nope never going back the electricity bill was enough and I was only running a system for a 400ltr tank. You can run a freshwater tank of 1000ltr and still be cheaper than a saltwater 400ltr system. Salt creep evaporation and the cost of salt and buying a RODI setup and storage system.. I’m sticking to my 800ltr custom Lake Tanganyikan display, it rivals any saltwater setup in my eyes..
Thats the beauty of this hooby, its all about keepers choice. I'll be sure to show how cheap you can make a successful saltwater system with only upfront costs 😁
I used to watch your videos a year ago when I first started fresh water aquarium for useful information. Now that I have an established planted tank a never watch videos on fresh water anymore. Now that Im about to start my salt water aquarium one of your videos on salt water came up. Im glad that you are putting salt water videos as well now. Keep them up!
Thanks! It feels like the natural evolution of freshwater keeping lol
Much of this is true, but also, you will soon find out, that this only gets you so far. You will be controlling so many parameters in no time, and do way more water tests than ever before. And then there are fish and coral. Certain fish don't go together (like on the fresh side), but unlike on the fresh side, it absolutely matters which fish goes in first and which last. Tons of extra research is needed to do this right. Then, you can't just dump most of your fish in one go, saltwater tanks are far more easier to throw off balance. And just when you think you know stuff, you will get into coral. Very soon you will find that some require vastly different water conditions, some grow like weed, while others don't. Some need super good lights, while other will grow by the moonlight. Then there's the chemical warfare that goes on between them. They constantly want to kill each other too, but not all of them. Then there are coral that have toxin so potent, that if handled incorrectly, can kill you and your entire household. And there's no antidote, so you kind of roll the dice. People like to ignore palytoxin but it is one of the most potent toxins on the planet. And all that, just scratching the surface. So while you want to ditch fear, at no point should you assume that just because you've done freshwater, you know what you are doing. I can set up a freshwater tank in one day and have it full of fish on the next. Everything in saltwater takes weeks to months and you have to set up a tank, knowing exactly what your endgame look is going to be.
Saying that, I'm looking forward to see how your journey will look like. Good luck!
With all due respect, I literally setup my saltwater tank and had fish in by day 2. And, I've spoken to some Saltwater guys that say FRESHWATER is harder! We dont have skimmers and Cheto refugiums and bacteria to remove excess nutrients from our tanks. We have to water change or learn how to keep a ton of plants alive. We dont have reactors and Steralizers to keep our water conditions/parameters in check. Which one is more difficult can be very subjective.
But ok, lets say Saltwater is more difficult...I know about all those things you mentioned because I've been researching going saltwater for about the last 6 months or so, and I know I will always be continuously learning. But it is VERY simple to START a Saltwater tank and that was the message being delivered in this video.
Obviously it isn't going to stay simple.
BUT dropping all that bogey man info to an audience of beginners isn't going to help anyone. Which is why I don't do it. Every new thing you try in life has its learning curve. Unloading details about what can kill you and all the difficulties and all the things you have to worry about, RIGHT NOW, simply scares people away from trying, and also, respectfully, just toots your own horn. I'm glad you were able to get over all those hurdles but with time, so can anyone else. No big deal.
And when we do...if we went around spreading how Difficult it was for us to achieve success, we would just be turning others away from trying. This is why the saltwater world gets the "snotty" label. Spreading how difficult sometyhing that you accomplished is, to keep you on a pedestal and everyone else beneath you. (not you personally, I'm just saying the saltwater world in general)
There's nothing so difficult about saltwater that cant be learned with a little effort and time.
I'll be honest, you're probably starting at a disadvantage with the attitude it's easier than others make out, lol. You're going to have a few hard lessons when it comes to keeping anything more than soft coral! Fish only is pretty straightforward, though.
Like I said in the video, I dont doubt there will be hard lessons, just like there were hard lessons when learning freshwater. This doesnt take skill or talent, just an ability to learn, which I am highly favored in!
Why is salt water being the most abundant also the most expensive 😅
Great perspective 🤔🤣
As long as you use R/O, and quarantine everything you will be fine. That’s easier said than done.
Very true! While I know how important it is to quarantine, even I fall victim to the impatient bug! 😁💪
Thanks for the app just installed it now!
Here from south african ^_^
Nice! Hope you're enjoying the app, new version with tons of new features will be available next month! 😁
I wanted to do saltwater but then realized the cost and way more time and effort needed and especially with my kids wanting a blue tang they need 125 gallon or more clownfish I could do maybe one day
I'll be sure to show that it doesnt really take any more time than we spend on the freshwater side. Yes theres upfront costs but once you have some systems in place its smooth sailing. !
Kev, I fully agree with the part about going into freshwater blind is harder than going into saltwater with the freshwater knowledge. I switched a couple months ago and it hasn’t been that hard because what I’ve learned from you and other creators with freshwater. A lot of the principles are the same. Only thing that was different was the salt in the water
LETS GOO!! Love to hear that bro! Sharing experiences like this gives us all hope! 😁
Kepted fresh water for 5 years now really wana start a small salt water tank and next payday I think I'm just Gona do it🐟 just s small tank
😁 I'll do my best to guide you along the way!
I haven't got space for another tank so I'm gonna have to get my salt water fix from you buddy let's go get salty 👍😎
lol, I'll do my best to supply the good stuff! 🤣💉
Bro the anticipation is killing me. Show us the tank!! 😂
😆😆 Live Premiere this Saturday!! 😁💪

Hey!
Off topic but i need someone trustworthy to do a review on jbl pro scan test kit? I want to use the normal test kit with the strips but im colourblind and its very difficult to make out, i have to send photos or ask my wife to help and its just a pain. Could you please review it or reccomend something similar?
Maybe compare it to the API test for accuracy or something please Kev!
I would LOVE to do salt water the ONLY problem i have is the RO water !!
Here in the uk its FAR to expensive to make and my nearest shop to buy it is 20 miles away !!
But ill be watching and drooling watching you set yours up !!
I bought my own for about $150, it’s worth it in the long run
@shayansiddiqui1155 agreed but I'm here in the uk and the water prices are shocking !!
I know that they have improved but most spit our about 2 or 3 gallon for evey 5 or 6 that just goes down the plug hole
I hear you bro, if water costs are high RO is going to make that higher. But you could go with a Fish Only saltwater tank, or a FOWLER tank and use straight tap water. It can be done!!
The channel where the damn ads are longer than the content. No thanks.
Why are you still watching then...go away!
Every channel has ads Jimmy. Go cry about it to whoever entertains you for free! AKA YOUR MOTHER!
I totally agree. I try to explain that to freshwater hobbyists.
My guy 🤟🏼
Hope you're considering it Jessica! 😁💪
I waste around $20,000 on saltwater fish i will never go back too much tresses
You may not have had the best guidance bro. I promise I can make you successful without wasting that much money! 💪
I agree with you 100%. With all the knowledge I got watching your videos i was able to be very successful at keeping fresh water aquariums. Using that knowledge i made the plunge into the saltwater side and i’ve never looked back.
Love to hear that bro! Thanks for sharing your experience, I plan to help many freshwater guys decide to make the transition 😁👍
I used to have a saltwater tank, and you are right, if you have the right equipment , it is just as easy as freshwater, but man, it was so enjoyable, I want another one in the future
Everyone I spoke to today at Reefapalooza said exactly the same thing! I hope you get another tank soon!! 😁
The best bit of advice I received when starting saltwater 2 years ago was "Nothing good happens fast in a reef tank" The start of the ugly stage can be horrendous, but as long as your nutrients are good then just wait it out. A reeftank will take about 12 months to mature and find balance. The worst thing a person can do is add chemicals to a reef to try and fix the problem quickly. Time is our friend in this hobby and when you pass the 12 month mark everything becomes so muxh easier.
Its true that is very good advice, but there are already new methods to reef keeping. And I plan to share them all. Including a great way to minimize or even avoid that ugly phase all together. And If I succeed it will all be documented right here on the channel 😁
@KaveManAquatics can't wait to follow you on your journey Kev. Much love from across the pond
100% the only fast thing that happens is a crash... two years ago I lost my 150 Reef after a long move... it's taken a full year to limp to where I'm seeing it truly bounce back and look great.
I have a 150 gallon saltwater tank with tangs and I love it it’s been running about a year now. I actually have running 3 tidal 110’s on the back and believe it or not it’s working perfect for me! Thanks for putting me on those filters bro you helped me a lot over the years
I believe it 100% bro! My first video in the series will discuss how your current filter system, like an HOB, is still going to work when switching to saltwater 😁
@@KaveManAquatics I’ll be watching I mean the proof is right here man I’ve been running mine for a year only 1 death and it was an aggression issue which is normal for tangs. But honestly make sure you get a great RO/DI system and you’ll be set bro
@@KaveManAquatics what fish are you planning to get
