Glad to see you enjoying the enthusiastic drive, Mr Khong. I'm sure it brought back a lot of sweet memories from your rally championship days. Thank you for sharing your passion!
Not often we get to see Uncle Khong work the steering hard! Must have been a lot of fun! Anyhow, for such wet conditions, the GR Yaris is no slouch in the handling department.
Long time since I’ve done that drive. I will want to take GR Yaris up there one day next time I’m in KL. Shared your video to some fellow Aussie GR Yaris fans. Thanks enjoy some likes no doubt you will have some more now.
Re-watching this video a year later and I still feel so tense. Can't get over Uncle Ys saying "a bit of understeer there *chuckles* ". Amazing watching him push the car too the limit!
Absolutely awesome...thank you! Wish there was a Genting Hill climb near Sydney...sadly everything is camera controlled here...the GR is one of the few new cars on the market which I aspire to own. I saw one in the flesh a few weeks ago & it was love @ first sight!!
@@YSKhongDriving Hi YS, you can buy low km near new models for $50k AUD which is actually a bargain for what this car is and it will surely become a classic.
I'm probably your same age..i was there many years ago watching you driving Toyota Levin in the estate..now you are driving this car probably made you younger Ya! Cheers 👍🍻
Man, there really is something to be said for how former racing drivers like Khong, Rosberg, Tsuchiya, etc push road legal cars to their limits. You can clearly see they have that different instinct and focus kick in that very few of us normal people have. There are levels to this.
This is an ultimately extreme driving up and down Genting Highland I ever seen in my freakin life. I mean, who dare to challenge by going full throttle up and down Genting highland in their own or sponsored supercar "during heavy downpour" to beat this legendary 70+ years old Uncle YS Kong and the bitter sweet and sexy but nasty Yaris GR??? Thank you Uncle YS Kong for sharing this video... Hats down.
Really adrenaline rush watching this. Need not speak and really enjoy watching how Mr Khong tame the fast car on wet road. Seems like reaching the usual route Gohtong a bit too soon, and Mr Khong gave a bonus run hit all the way up. @11.30 its a disguised corner caught Mr Khong said understeer. But its fun video. Thank you, but still safety first.
Uncle - great video as usual and sublime car control esp in the wet! Would love to see you test an old school Honda Civic vtec eg9 or an old Subaru Wrx
@@YSKhongDriving yup, and the surface coefficient of friction is changing continuously which makes it very hard to judge the perfect entry speed, nevertheless great driving !
At around 14:15 I realised that I was gripping my phone so tightly throughout. What a rush that was! That right hand understeer gave me quite a fright but I bet it was so satisfying for you. Thrilling!
GR Yaris could be more faster than Arteon 4 Motion. Only professional racing driver plus champion can drive like that in the wet. Truly untouchable racing speed at Genting uphill.
From down guard house to GotongJaya 5 minutes 20 seconds. Uncle legs on clutch, brakes and accelerator like symphony conducted using legs 🦵. Sometimes manual gears is to feel the horses 🐎.
Yes, the road was wet, and one viewer told me not to dramatise it because it was only alightly wet. Yes it was, for about a minute, and then there was water running across the road

I am still finding the limits of the car. I usually drive according to what the car can do, and this car is phenomenal. Believe me, I was still being careful.
nice one, what tyre is it again? PS4S? cant get GR yaris anymore so need to push toyota to bring in GR Corolla and put booking before booking is open :D
Just curious, with the driving style uphill should you be asking for 50 more BHP or 50Nm more torque? Always wonder the purpose of each, like an example is there is a Kia Sorento with only 200bhp but up to 300NM of torque which some people say great things about
Torque and hp go together. More hp also means more torque. I also drove the Sorento, and the video is on this channel, and it is on this same route, at least for the first part. Watch that one and compare it to this video - then you will note the height, weight, and overall driving dynamics are totally different, and the entire package makes a car what it is, not just the power.
@@YSKhongDriving thanks uncle! I shall watch and understand better! Yes I remember watching old Colin mcrae rallies and his STI had loads of torque but not as much BHP as for example a BMW M5, but if not wrong it's for purpose of winding roads and drifting instead of sheer straight line speeds.
Uncle .. after the 2nd run how the gearbox feel ? from 2nd to 3rd and 3 rd to 2nd . Still notchy and miss shift ? if so .. i think this is the trade mark of GR Yaris GB . 😀
Uncle YS, may i ask a questing on your steering inputs? It looks different from when you are driving on dry surfaces. Is it to check for traction on the front tires?
In the wet, you see some corrections during the turn, to counter oversteer, and also sometimes in the turn, you see additional movements to induce some oversteer if the car is understeering. One needs to feel the road and do whatever is necessary to maintain the car in the line of travel. Steering movements are done with acceleration or braking actions, depending on the situation, and everything is instinctive; you really have no time to think about what to do next. For example there was a sharp right hander about 2 km from the top, with a relatively long run up, and after the apex, I throttles down and straightened the steering to allow it to understeer a little to the left, but that straightens the car for me to puty foot down again. Contunued hard throttle would have caused more understeer, and I would probably end up against the wall.
@@YSKhongDriving thank you Uncle YS for the detailed explanation! Really opens up my eyes to your level of detail for your steering/throttle/brake inputs when driving. My instincts are definitely not at that level yet, sadly. I only have access to karting tracks with rental karts here in Singapore to practice my driving skills but i'm not complaining, still learning alot for weight transfer, especially driving a kart in the wet with slicks 😂😂 Also, is it possible to have a permenant foot cam for your Genting Hillclimb drives? I understand that you only do it for the manual cars, but being able to see your brake and throttle inputs for the hillclimbs can make your viewers see the combination of driving inputs to maintain grip or to induce oversteer to help with the turn in. Once again Uncle YS, thank you for your driving videos! I would say your channel is in the same league with Best Motoring for me. I keep coming back to watch your Genting/Sepang drives!

I dont think I reached its limit. You can see the rally drivers doing wonders with the GR Yaris. No doubt they have modified some of the stuff, but even this base car is fantastic. However, I discovered that you have to drive it hard to make it work. Of course you can drive it slow, and it will get up there as well.

Yes, the grip was just too good. The torque was not good enough, so a lower gesr would be better and allows a bit of spin to throw the tail out. The previous day I did exactly as you said, and it kinda bogged down in some corners. Do watch the other video, and thanks for your comments. I only had a couple of days with the car so was still in discovery mode, hahaha. Lots more to learn about the true limits of the car, yet at the same time trying to be responsible.
