  • This is my shooting review of the new Fujifilm XF33mm f/1.4 R LM WR. Much like the XF18mm f/1.4 R LM WR, the latest Fujilux is a well built, high performance lens for the X Series. For those looking for the latest and greatest optical design from Fujifilm, this new standard lens will not disappoint. If you currently have the older XF35mm f/1.4 R, is it worth it to upgrade? It really depends on how you use the lens, but there is a huge difference in size and weight. Check out my other two videos on this new lens, as well as my latest article on Fujilove Magazine. Wait for more reviews on the latest lenses and cameras from Fujifilm in the next few weeks.

    I wish they would’ve just added weather sealing to the 35mm f1.4… It already had spectacular image quality. This new 33mm f1.4 won’t be as convenient to carry, and will not work as well on the X-Pro cameras due to the longer length.

      Also less beautiful aesthetically. I’m not a fan of their new utilitarian 1.4 lens designs, they lack the character of the older models. The new 23 1.4 also lacks the focus clutch. As a video shooter I’m definitely interested in these due to the poor continuous af on the stepping motor lenses but for photos the original 23 and 35 1.4 look like better lenses still.

      @@owRekssjfjxjxuurrpqpqss Even with the clutch it's still focus by wire, not as accurate as true mechanical manual focus. I'm not sure why manufacturers don't do it mechanically anymore.

    • @zevendj98
      @zevendj98 3 года назад +3

      f1.4 is not about light gathering, it's about DOF. If you want to measure light gathering you use t stops and frequently they don't match f stops.

    • @zevendj98
      @zevendj98 3 года назад

      @sleepy at dawn I agree with you that DOF is not a necessity the majority of the time, I shoot primarily at f5.6 or f8 with my X-Pro2, but still measuring the light gathering by f stops is incorrect. For example, the 25mm f1.2 Zuiko Pro has the DOF of a f1.2 but the light transmittance of a t1.8, which is less than a Rokinon 24mm t1.5 (that has a wider DOF)

    I currently have the 35mm F1.4 ( for weddings)...I was thinking of getting the XF33mm. HOWEVER, the 35mm 1.4 autofocus is not a concern for me. At weddings, I am able to get the bride walking down the aisle without the lens missing focus ( for instance, I took a serie of 24 photos of the bride and Maid of honor walking together and all 24 photos are in focus : I use center point focusing, and continuous at higher speed ).....so honestly, I don't really see the need to get the 33mm for me ( if i do, it would be more a "Want" than "need" )
    ALso, I have shot in light rain with the 35mm without issue ( I also use the XH1 cameras)

  • @parmanduke

    I have at 35mm f1.4 and it is fantastic. Renders photos and bokeh 95% of what ff does imo. Honestly don't care between the two. Center sharpness is fantastic. Stop down and it's sharp across the board. Amazing how the 35mm f1.4 was loved for so long and so many YT reviewers now crap on it. I also have the 35mm f2. Another fantastic lens and another lens that gets crapped on from the recent 33mm f1.4 reviewers.

    It seems to me that the quieter new lenses are mainly for videographers and those that shoot in wet, humid or damp conditions or largely at night. Videography is increasingly more popular now than when the first series of lenses were made. The reason many of us chose the Fuji system was for manageable size and weight. The new lenses don’t provide much better quality results for a nearly doubling in weight, so not for me.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  3 года назад

      I agree that video has become a big market, but these lenses resolve more than what a typical video camera can capture, so these also work great as stills lenses. Fujifilm still makes compact lenses, but just giving more options for pros or those looking for faster glass. Of course you do pay in size and weight....

    The 18-55 F2.8 - F4 kit lens is 310 grams and the 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR is only 50g heavier. I also have the 70-300 F4-F5.6 which is 588 grams. I use an X-T30 and both of these are manageable, so why wouldn't the 33mm be? At least for me, it is definitely worth the weight.
    I'm looking forward to the 23mm review. If the performance between the 23mm and the 33mm are equal then that 1:5 magnification ratio and short minimum focus distance might be the determining factors!

    I already own the 35 1.4 with the XT3 but now you’re making me rethinking my 33 pre order and maybe get a 18 1.4. I too don’t want to buy one of each ($$$)
    But Take yes i can’t wait for your article comparing but please as a 35 1.4 veteran please be sure you test image sharpness wide open. The 35 1.4 is great wide open but ONLY in the very center. For portraits where the subjects eyes is in the top 3rd of the frame, softness would ruin the portrait. So you’d have to center the subject then crop with the 35 1.4. So please test how far out the sharpness travels to from the center vs the old lens, say at portrait distance. You can use a wall for this subject or even an actual human :)

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  3 года назад +2

      owning the XF35 and then thinking about the XF33 is a tough decision without actually using it. You have to decide if you're willing to drag around extra size and weight for quieter AF and WR. In terms of sharpness the XF35mm f/1.4 never had great corner to corner sharpness except when stopped down to around f/4. That's why I said if you stop both lenses down to f/4-5.5 for street, you won't really see a difference. But if shooting wide open, you gotta centre your subjects....

  • @eliaspap8708
    @eliaspap8708 2 года назад

    Thanks for sharing, interesting comparison. Is the weight really so bad. I noticed u mentioned it quite a few times. Im not sure 100 odd grams is a really big deal for the enthusiast/professionals. Coming from FF the 33mm or 50mm FF equivalent its still pretty damn light. If ur into street photography the 35f2 would be perfect. the AF is so bloody loud on the 35f1.4 it would literally wake up the neighbourhood and if ur lucky it may acquire focus. When i sold my 35f1.4 it was good rid-dins the 35f2 outperformed it in every way.

    thanks as always - its nice to see photo samples in the beginning of the videos.
    maybe I missed it so I do apologize - but for video similar reasons to choose the 18 over the 16mm - would you say picking the 33 to use for video is a reasonable thought process over the 35mm? (or 23) which ever one.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  3 года назад +2

      I think for video most would pick the 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR for its ability to isolate, versus using the new XF23mm f/1.4 R LM WR. However, the new 23mm can focus much closer (19cm vs 30cm) so depending on what you're trying to do. For my documentary from a few years back, my videographer basically used a 28mm and 50mm equiv to get 80-90% of our footage

It's awkward. 18mm feels slightly gimmicky to me, coming pre-built with its slight distortion and weird background shrinking. People point it at anything and thing the results are cool.

They weren't saying it wasn't possible, but that they would have to develop a new way of doing it, for a single lens. If they did so, they'd have to raise the price to a level that wouldn't make economic sense. So I understand why they just left it as is, but also decided not to discontinue it.

      @@philipm.5747 for sure, I've gotten use to dealing with CA over the years since I tend to use older lenses adapted and they all exhibit CA. If this new 33 f/1.4 is not meant to replace the old 35 f/1.4 will Fujifilm update the 35 f/1.4 any time soon then?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  3 года назад

      Good question. My guess is maybe, but not now. I remember being told a few times that if Fujifilm adds WR and a new focus motor system, they have to change the optical formula of the XF35mm f/1.4 R. Their approach to WR on lenses does not align with what's necessary to add WR to this older lens. So it's not that it's impossible to add WR to the old lens, but that it would cost them too much time and money in R&D to make it happen, and then not be able to raise the price. It makes business sense with what they did. Instead of trying to modify an older design, just make an all new design that can be applied to a new family of lenses, and then pump the lenses out by streamlinging the manufacturing and construction process....

      @theronsan 3 года назад

      @@bigheadtaco Thanks for the reply! Although I wish that the autofocus was more confident and that it had WR, I’m happy with my 35mm f/1.4. I will keep it as long as I have a Fuji camera. I even love the box that the 35 f/1.4 came with 😊 It reminds me of a more expensive Apple/Leica box. It has a similar size of an iPhone box, it’s all black cardboard with a nice black foam inside and it closes with a magnetic snap. It feels premium. Not sure if Fujifilm makes these kind of boxes anymore?
      I guess it makes sense for them to design a new modern line of f/1.4 lenses. But since I prefer smaller lenses, I will probably have to choose the 35 f/2 instead of the new 33 f/1.4 if I want a more confident autofocus and WR.

    • @akyerit
      @akyerit 3 года назад +1

      @M Tech ya my point being, in the full frame world, 50 f2's aren't that expensive or hard to come by. Even newer ones. And you get the added benefit of a full frame sensor. Which is a huge difference

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  3 года назад +3

      Yes and no. In terms of the same field-of-view (which is possible because they share the same 3:2 aspect ratio) and equivalent depth of field, this is true. But f/1.4 still means you're getting 1 stop more light hitting the sensor, so your exposure won't be the same between a 33mm f/1.4 on APS-C at f/1.4 versus a full frame camera with a 50mm f/2.0. Also most 50mm f/2 lenses are on the lower end of the scale in terms of construction, optical quality, and features (WR, linear motor). They are usually cheaply constructed, low end focus motors, no aspherical or ED glass elements, etc. This is a pro built lens with pro spec optics and high end features, but with a a field of view and depth of field equivalent wide open to a 50mm f/2.

      @M Tech the canon 50 1.8 would be more comparable to the 35 1.4 in terms of build, motor, wr... But I get your point. Something like the sony 55 is more comparable and it's smaller and has similar price than the fuji 33 so I think it's hard to justify going for the apsc

    Very subjective, but I prefer quality primes with fewer glass elements. I’ve heard that the 35mm f1.4 has a certain character. What does that mean.? I find that the classic 7-8 element lenses produce images that appear more 3-dimensional. Of course the image is in 2-dimensions, but they seem to have more depth.
    Zooms and overly corrected primes seem to flatten the image. I don’t think this is something that can be measured and may be completely between my ears, but there you have it. I would not buy a prime with that many elements, besides the weight and size. That’s the purpose of getting a prime! By the time those poor little photons make it trough 15 elements I think they are just too tired.
    Speaking of depth: instead of correcting the green/magenta adoration in post process, get an old pair of 3-D glasses and swap out the lenses with green and magenta film filters. Why didn’t Taco think of that?

    • @awake780
      @awake780 3 года назад +1

      You are likely referring to the field curvature in the older, less clinical primes. The trade-off is less sharpness in the corners and more color fringing, but the character is incredible (if that’s what you are after).

    • @Thomas_Geist
      @Thomas_Geist 3 года назад

      @@awake780 Not any curature or even age. Fuji’s primes are well corrected. Just a seeming depth not present with lenses with 17 elements. The chromatic fringing is really noticable on Fuji lenses. Just a bit a magenta and green. I was thinking of getting magenta and green filters and putting them in a reading glasses frame like the old 3-D movies. Not really, but I wonder if it would work.
