During the 2008 meltdown, when the government bailed out huge companies like Bear Stearns, AIG, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac, guess who they brought in to clean up the mess? Another big financial firm called BlackRock, led by a well-connected billionaire named Larry Fink. BlackRock got these key government contracts to help with the meltdown without any competitive bidding, all under a veil of secrecy. So essentially, Larry Fink was hired to manage Washington’s bailout of Wall Street, even though BlackRock is one of the biggest shareholders in the same banks they were helping to bail out.
In 2020, guess who the US money printer, the Federal Reserve, hired to manage their corporate bond-buying scheme? Yep, they went straight back to BlackRock. Basically, they were bailing out corporations drowning in debt or needing to borrow money. And funny enough, the same corporations BlackRock was helping to bail out were the ones they held some of the biggest stakes in.
And yet, despite all his considerable power, most people have barely heard of Larry Fink. BlackRock has only recently come into the spotlight because of claims they're buying up single-family homes. But that's because Larry is smart-he's kept it that way on purpose. For the last 33 years, he's been busy building BlackRock into the world's biggest asset manager, with over $9 trillion under management. Today, BlackRock's clients include the retirement accounts of everyday people through pension funds, as well as sovereign wealth funds, other central banks, college endowments, Fortune 500 companies, and millions of individual investors.
