  • In this tutorial, I'll show you how to 3D print a vase from a solid 3D model using SketchUp and Cura. I used to think that you'd have to model the vase exactly as it prints out, but in reality, you can use parameters built into the slicing software to tell it to print hollow, with no top, and a single wall thickness.

    • @Mastersketchup
      @Mastersketchup  9 лет назад

      You can't generate Gcode right from SketchUp. You need to use a slicing software like Cura so you can set your machine parameters and printing preferences.

    Hey Matt. Super useful and great video! Thanks so much for sharing!! Just subscribed your channel.
    The blue vase behind you looks so nice! I tried to figure out how to model that but couldn't think out a way. If you can explain briefly, it'll be wonderful and greatly apprecated!!!

    This is a great video. However I'd love to see and updated version since the new Cura has completely different menus and option names. I can't get the info from this video to line up with the options in Cura 3.4.x

    FWIW an alternative way to model a hollow vase would be to offset the curve profile into an inner and outer curve, with wall thickness and bottom between them. Then revolve or Follow Me with that face around the circle.

    Thanks for the video. I'll receive my printer tomorrow and this is a great start to modeling something simple! Your link for Cura points to the version I have installed, but they seem quite different. There are a lot of checkboxes in Setting Visibility so maybe that's where a lot of things are that you are talking about.

    Thanks for the video, it covers vases in more detail then a lot of other sites. I’m just starting out. One question I have is When should I make the wall or shell thickness larger and should I do it, say from .4 to .6 or go to .8? Is it as simple as if it seems to flexible just up it? Thanks!

    Fantastic tutorial! What printer do you use? and how does it compare to a Formlabs 3? Also, what is the cost of the materials to print out your vase?

    • @Mastersketchup
      @Mastersketchup  4 года назад

      I have the MendelMax 3, it was made by a small company Makers Tool Works. It's quite expensive compared to other printers these days. It's a great printer, but I can't recommend it any more due to cost. The Formlabs printer is a completely different type of printer. It uses a liquid resin and uses light to cure each layer one at a time. My printer uses a roll of plastic filament that is melted by an extruder to produce each layer. The vase materials probably cost a nickel.

    Will you please address the correct way to get a model printed the same size as it was designed in SketchUp when it is imported to Cura as a .STL file.

    On quick settings, do you have it on normal or fast print?
    I`m wondering, when I have cura open and save my file on the computer after I done all settings, and then save it on the SD card. Will the printer know what settings I used when I print from the SD card, or do you have to use the computer so the printer knows what settings to use. If not it will just print and you have to do the settings yourself on the printer. I have a wanaho duplicator i3.
    I printed out one vase before I saw this video, but it wasen`t waterproof (the water ran out at the buttom), what is the settings that makes this waterproof so I can have water in it. Is it
    Thanks;)

    that was beautiful,
    thanks for the clear explanation and this beautiful video!
    small question?
    is there a pause button in Cura? (I do not use Cura but repetier host)
    I am a beginner and unfortunately my printer(Prusa i3 homebuilt) Crashes sometimes
    if the work(piece of work) is a bit larger this happens unfortunately sometimes. (do not know yet why)
    in Repetier Host do you have the pause button, and if you then click pauze you can change the filament,
    I then use this pause to remedy the crash!
    In Repetier Host you can change the filament,
    It can with the help of the motors (manual operation) during pause.
    sorry for bad English (I'm not so good at, and combination Google translation)
    Friendly greetings from the Netherlands
    Rob.

    This was really helpful & useful.
    I'm a total newbie to 3D printing (but have been watching it for a few years). Will like to get my first 3D printer soon, but have always worried about learning the software etc.
    I like Sketchup (don't like Autocad).
    What is the slicer software? It looks very good on this video. Does this come with certain 3D printers or do I need to get it online (like your Cura you mention)?

    Bearings Shot right out of the box.
    I thought it was awesome that it got here in a week. But they're gonna make me wait 6 to 8 weeks for the bearings I need.
    So I have a pile useless 3d printer.

    Awesome video. Thanks. I'm new to both sketchup and 3d printing. Is there a way to make the vase double thick? And can you do anything to make the vase (or any 3d printed object) smooth?

    • @Mastersketchup
      @Mastersketchup  5 лет назад

      Hi Russ. This video is old, but you could perhaps configure your settings so that there is zero infill, but set your perimeters to 2, and make sure you have a bottom thickness too. You'd have to make sure the top doesn't print either. As far as smoothing a 3D print, you can use more segments with your model to make it more smooth. There are also different techniques for smoothing a print once it is printed. Sanding, filling, and using chemicals to "melt" the print slightly, are all different things you might want to search for. I've personally never done any of that.

    Hi. Is it possible to convert the 3d model to 2d and just choose what measurement to show in the plan?

    • @Mastersketchup
      @Mastersketchup  4 года назад

      Yeah. You can use LayOut to create 2D plans of your 3D model. You'll need SketchUp Pro to get LayOut.
