    Do the right thing? They sold it, as is. The right thing is to do what you want with what you bought. And yes, you did buy the stuff in the chest. So it is yours. You can give it back if you feel bad, but it is not "legally theirs" means everyone knows it is "yours" once sold to you. Do the right thing? No. Do the "classy" or "friendly" or "generous" thing. The right thing would have been to profit from your good luck and keen eye.

      What "wise and wonderful thing" is it to legally purchase something At Auction and then return contents that he was lucky enough to become the Legal Recipient of?? Besides, the original "owner", probably family of a deceased uncle or something DIDNT HAVE ANY INTEREST IN UNCLE JOE's STUFF OTHER THAN TO SELL IT ANYWAY. So it's "moral" to return something to someone WHO DIDNT OWN IT ANYMORE under the guise of Doing The Right Thing?? You're not thinking very clearly.

    • @alanwerner8563
      @alanwerner8563 6 лет назад

    I bought a box of books at an estate sale for $180. I purchased it because I saw that there was a first edition copy of the Fountainhead on top of the box. I hadn't dug into the box, I had spotted it just minutes before it was put up for auction. Anyways, I later found a first edition copy of The Grapes Of Wrath near the bottom of the box, and another $300 worth of first or limited edition books. I later sold the GOW for $2000. I never considered for one second finding the family of the prior owner. Did they refund any money to the people who got auction fever and overpaid for figurines?

    It was at an estate sale.
    The family obviously didn't give a Danm about that dresser so they sold it.
    THE ONLY REASON they would care about it is if they could get more cash out of selling it.
    So if I buy an old dresser at an estate sale and it has several items belonging to a Civil War Veteran I would for Danm sure keep it!

    I once bought an old 1930s photo of a man. When I took out the back panel to clean the glass on the front, a bunch of Prisoner of War letters came spilling out. The guy in the picture was an American Wake Island POW in a Japanese camp that died from cruel and inhumane treatment in a Shangai prisoner camp. Still trying to track down his next of kin, but I think they are all dead. I did a video about it hoping to have someone help me find his family members. Maybe one day I will be able to reunite these old letters with someone that is related to him...

It obviously had no sentimental value or someone would’ve kept it. The family had ample time I’m sure to inspect that dresser before putting it up for sale. Although I guess it's possible they never moved the thing from where it was sitting in the house to begin with, however, the sellers should have been present when it was moved out of the house after the sale. The sellers would still have a claim on the contents if the dresser had not yet left the home.

  • @ravenwalkerrobison1380
    @ravenwalkerrobison1380 7 лет назад +1

    I checked the story. Alas, It is TRUE! However, since the dresser started out in Michigan and wound up in an Estate sale in Texas, everything is "sold as is"- that means he could have kept it without fear of reprecussions. The fact that the people doing the sale plus owners did not know or care about the rattling noise. Fact is if it was dolly carted to be set up for the sale, if the dolly squeeked you might not hear it rattling. The other fact that people these days work with headphones might also contribute to the factor. Next factor is I have a "sideboard" from the early 1800's. My sideboard has a tight drawer with a type of "grated" slots on the top where when you slide tge drawer, the content underneath does not shift. These grooves are very minute and nothing hangs on them. My father was an auctiineer and he told me what they werr called but I can not remember at this moment. This dresser might have had one of these type "anti-shift" features.

    We bought a dresser too when we found millions of dollars stuffed into the products inside the the back of the dresser it too was dated 1858 and 1935. The 1858 was old bank bonds. The rest was fifty dollar bills in small stacks. We said nothing .We could not find the people who sold it to us at an flea market

      Bee Snort Most of the Items probably held sentimental value to the owners, I would of offered him money instead.

      How many times have we seen good and decent people get stiffed??? Just saying, think again, cause when you get stuff to the owners, they end up being greedy bastards and notgiving a shit!

    That was just plain stupid of him. He bought it fair and square, they missed the value of it many times over- I'm sure, it was legally his. He let himself believe it was wrong, or a friend or family member did, that sabotaged his true value with that purchase.
    If it had been me, I would have kept it and made sure it turned into the rare find it was!!! My two cents.

    I',m not so sure I agree with him and I consider myself to be a fair and honest human being. He purchased it as is and to me that seems like the end of the deal. It was such a lovely piece of furniture with that marble top, I don't see how the family could even think of selling it in the first place! But, that's just my opinion.

    I would not have opened it until I got home. I would have politely said that I would check it out later and let them know what it was. I learned a long time ago when it comes to estate sales, "You win some, you lose some". And *_NEVER_* go before the last few hours of the last day. I might (probably with that much) would have contacted the family, but only after I had a clear idea of what I had, but even then, I may not have disclosed _everything._ Allowing the estate sales "professionals" to get their hands in the till at that point, would not have been a good idea. Their cut can be around 50%, and they have very little invested, beyond time (although they will make it sound like they may charge 50%, but by the time they pay their expenses, they'll only make around 20%, which is BS).

      A Florida Son, this shows the I don't care attitude of grandson, if not how can someone sell their belongings without checking over the object before selling it, the grandchild disrespect his grandmother properties for not looking over everything or employ someone to do so.
