Thank you for being the ONLY reviewer to do deep dives into the nuts and bolts on smartphone cameras!! The marketing and spec omissions often make it very difficult for us nerds to 1) know what we are actually buying and 2) utilize the capabilities of these sensors and software to their fullest. Much appreciated.
Great journalism Juan! I don't personally think it is a deal breaker, but people like you catching stuff is what keeps them from going too far afield with bogus claims that seriously affect usability.
It's quite annoying when you want to be zoomed for stuff like nightmode or 50MP but 3.2 is just a little too much so you're forced to use 1x and crop in afterwards
3:33 I discovered that it was not 75mm by measuring the field of view and interestingly, other apps like MotionCam (for recording RAW video) show this lens as 62mm and based on the mathematics of my measurements it is the closest value.
The Xiaomi 14 also has 60mm, and the 14 pro has 67mm. Yet Xiaomi still advertised both of them as having 75mm lens. How about the Xiaomi 13 pro? Is it the same?
And OP pulled some shenanigans too in the past. I just don't get why they would do that here. The 13 Ultra is a ridiculous MONSTER of a camera phone. Advertising a 60mm instead of a 75mm changes almost nothing about the operation of the cameras, EXCEPT you aren't getting the native resolution of the mid sensor in auto mode.
Find X6 Pro does this, from a real 2.8 optical to a default 3x setting. Problem is, when there's cropping involved, you ultimately lose fine details in the process. GSMarena explained this when they compared the 3x and 2.8x shots from the Find, obviously 2.8 came out much sharper with plenty of resolution compared to a noticeably "upscaled" photo from the 3x shot. Thank you for bringing this up Juan! This is very important if the photographer intends to preserve the most amount of detail possible in the shot
This is what Huawei has been doing for the longest time. Crop in and upscale, but advertise the cropped focal length alongside the actual resolution. That's why I always zoom out slightly when I want a good shot, so I'm using more of the sensor and getting less upscaling... or simply shooting in pro mode (but then you lose some of the HDR processing). They finally fixed this with the P60 Pro, where they advertise the *cropped* resolution alongside the cropped focal length. We're reasonably sure the P60 Pro uses the 1/2" sensor that the P50 Pro used, but at a shorter focal length, and/or matched to smaller glass. I think what this allows them to do is use a much bigger aperture for the same equivalent focal length, allowing much brighter images. IIRC, it's at F2 versus F3.5 for the P50/Mate50. And when you put their 3.5x zoom shots side by side, the difference is quite noticeable. Even though you're using more sensor area for the same shot with the older phone, the P60 image is brighter and less processed, and with a shorter exposure time. Quite an interesting way to get around the space limitations for camera zooms.
Can you do full camera review for Xiaomi 13 ultra, and also include tips and tricks editing. I searched in RUclips but no one really do that . I'm looking forward to it 😊
Definitely think it is mis advertising and would like them to update all marketing materials. That said... Seems like they're still duking it out with Sony for king of camera phones so it might be "lesser than advertised" but still way more camera than most other premium tier phones. Just sucks because this will piss off the prosumer photography audience
That is not the same thing. So far, I've always seen that the specs listed the correct focal length. In this case, xiaomi was giving 75mm everywhere as if it wasn't doing cropp.
@@glutworkout9774 In Auto, it does give the usual cropped 75mm effective focal length. It's only in Pro mode that it uses the actual 60mm effective focal length.
@@FAT8893 for me cropping in auto isn't problem, I still can zoom out a bit and have native 60mm. The problem is that xioami was telling us that is 75mm camera.
Seen something similar not only in Xiaomi but Google, difference is Xiaomi maybe took it too far. With Mi 10 although it binned to 27mp you got 25mp cause it crops, same as Mi 13 series but from 60mm to 75mm there's a huge difference specially when you interchange between auto and pro since you'll get a totally different handling of the same situation.
Two questions: What is the feasibility of interchangeable lenses in smartphones? What would u prefer between these two : 1. A Single retractable camera with 1" sensor, 28/35mm equi Lens, variable aperture (F1.0-F11), xenon flash, mechanical shutter, nd filter. 2.multiple cameras but none of them is an outstanding or have above features.
i just tested out 60mm and 75mm on auto, there is a difference in-terms of quality. Also, they kept it to 75mm because it was used as a portrait lens on 13 pro, which has the 75mm focal length and everyone liked it.
That would be fine if they cropped for a portrait mode, but I don't love them advertising 75 on the main photo mode, but that's not REALLY what the lens/sensor is doing.
@@SomeGadgetGuyhey also crop on the Xiaomi 13 pro and Xiaomi 13 telephotos but not as much as the 13 ultra. None of the telephotos on the entire 13 series have the advertised zoom factor. They all switch to the telephoto earlier than the advertised 3.2x zoom.
@@big_smoke7t I can't remember now it's so long since I tried it. The Xiaomi 14 also does this. It switches around 2.6x to telephoto so it's really only 60mm but it says it's 75mm
Thank you so much for showing the aperture equivalents! That was what i really wanted to know but ended up being fascinated with your discovery about the cheesed focal length! Great video
I don't care about 75 vs 60mm. They could have advertised it as 60mm as well, which is just as good a focal length for portrait. I don't like it when they show 3.2x in the menu. 0.2 doesn't matter for ordinary people. 0.5x, 1x 3x 5x could be cleaner. Now that we know it is 60mm, then 2.5x could be the choice. Though the real value is 2.6x. It's all about they chose 23mm rather than 24mm.
they will say it's a deal breaker on a xiaomi . but samsung can lie as much they want. we'll trust them because they're more popular 😂we can forgive them lol. it's funny how people review products based on their popularity. it has become intolerable man🤦♂they have no idea how powerful phones like the latest sony, find x6 pro, x90 pro and 13 ultra. they are missing a lot
I think it is simply for offering more zoom options and that they are relatively balanced with each other (without too big or small jumps): 05x, 1x, 2x, 3.2x and 5x. It is the possibility to which I see more commercial sense.
Ok so I found out that 13 pro has a very true 75mm lens, I tested it and it switches lens at exactly 3.2x which is awesome. I don't understand why the ultra is downgraded yet they still advertised it as 75mm. Also the ultra doesn't have close focusing macro capability with the telephoto like the 13 pro. I would say the 3.2x tele on the 13 pro is better than the ultra but well ultra has additional periscope.
Oh the issue isnt the functionality of 60mm. The issue is they're advertising 75mm. If you went to a camera store and bought a "75mm", but it was really a 60mm lens you would be unhappy. "Just crop your photos in more when you edit, and it looks just like a 75" would not be a solution.
The picture coming out of Xiaomi 13 ultra are incredible! As long as it don't affect my pictures i don't have any problem. And as far as I used the camera everything seems top notch.❤
It was probably done because getting a wide aperture on that focal length and sensor combo would've been pretty hard without a periscope layout, but honestly, a 60mm may make more sense than a 75 because it's a better middle ground between 23mm and 120, but I guess they wanted to bring it closer to the classic "portrait focal length" aka 85mm, but hey, 60mm is close to the good old "normal" 50. I also remember reading somewhere that the 1/2.51" size of imx858 was measured differently from the conventional way it's done (to the effect that the sensor is actually a tad bigger), which is a move that doesn't makes much sense, but the validity of the claim is questionable to say the least.
That would only make sense to me if it were like Sony using a 1" sensor, but with a lens that covered a smaller portion. As i showed, we can see the full field of view on pro mode and in smooth zooming in auto mode, and it looks great at 60mm.

I can see why Xiaomi do the cropping to give longer focal length, but I personally don't mind having 60mm on both Auto and Pro mode all along. Even Sony used a shorter 60mm 2.5x zoom sensor for the Xperia 5 Mk4 telephoto camera compared to the Xperia 1/5 Mk2's 70mm 3x zoom sensor.

I kinda like the idea of having a 60mm for video recording, this way the telephoto will kick sooner before the cropped main lens becomes blurry

The math was REALLY confusing. The crop didn't match the sensor size.
Oppo has a much larger sensor but its f/2.6 though
I wonder how that comes out in full frame equivalent
About f/11.
Xiaomi telephoto has exactly f/11,3 and Oppo has f/11,4, so very small difference.
