It would have been nice to see all suppies lined out and the chinese finger trap technique used to secure placement. Also gow you would measure the tube prior, what are the land marks for the tube? Vid was soo short. Also the landmarks on radiographs used to ensure proper placement.

For how long do you keep an NG tube?

    • @EthosVeterinaryHealth

Hi Asclepio! The NG tube is kept in until the patient can properly eat enough calories on their own and keep medications down. The time varies greatly based on patient and ailment. NG tubes can stay in place for long periods of time though, even when the patient leaves the hospital, but should be checked and changed about every week.

@@EthosVeterinaryHealth do you listen to the abdomen sending some air with a syringe before feeding the pet? I mean, to to verify the location of the tip of the tube…

Radiographs are taken to confirm placement! You can aspirate the tube using the syringe to determine the tube is down the esophagus. If air is aspirated using the syringe, then the tip of the tube may not be in the esophagus/stomach and the tube may need to be removed and re-inserted. If the stomach is gas-filled, you should expect to aspirate air. Smelling the aspirated air may help differentiate between proper and improper placement.
