Just finished reading his book. An amazing, detailed, brave book indeed. Kudos to you, Tony Dokoupil, and thank God for the fact that you came up with the conclusion of "If he chose his life, I can choose mine." What an encouragement after years of heartache, mystery, and a head full of questions. Thanks so much for sharing your story.

his dad was not a bad looking guy at a ll....but obviously abusing drugs and living unclean, makes humans look funky.

Yep. there are few people who look really good in the close-up shots. In this story I think he looks ultra-handsome in profile when he is sitting next to his father. (5:53) His good looks are on the same level as those of the late JFK Jr.

Glamorous it is not living in a crime infested neighborhood where drugs was at the forefront in a home with a single mom that tried with all that was in her to protect her children from the obvious. I'm sure marijuana wasn't all he (your dad) sold. Glad you found your father. But to my eyes living in the environment he helped create gives me another perspective of this story. I was captivated by your story of you finding your father and how I began to feel so proud that you became so successful under the circumstances. Until, I saw seen how you smiled so hard and seemed so proud of your father being a drug dealer. It hurt my heart because I had many of friends and family that parents and children were lost in the cesspool your father helped to create.

What a tail!! I watched Miami Vice with wide eyes and big dreams. If only Dad had been a Marine we would have been there. Dad joined the Army and we traveled through the South and eventually overseas to Seoul. What a life I have lived. I turned 20 in USVI St Croix where he was the head of there National Guard!! I think it was considered punishment for his divorce from my Mom. In actuality it was a blessing!! He married my stepmom there in ‘86 and they are still going strong. God bless us all for are past transgressions and mistakes. Good is good and love is love!! It will always win in the end. Thanks Dad I love you and Sooki very much. You both are my rocks and who I look to when I want to see a good strong marriage!! ❤❤❤

A pretty moving story I can relate in a way being adopted... I unfortunately lost my dad to drugs, at least Tony got to reconnect with his Dad. Though as he said, “it hurts” I feel that way often not having my biological mom or dad.

I'm also adopted. I adore the parents who raised me, id die for them ( if and when they were still alive) im always perplexed by adoptees that value their biological parents over the parents who loved, cherished and raised them. no need to love or hate biological parents, but the loyalty needs to be for the parents that raised you. such an insult to the adoptive parents, to search for the bio parent.

The reporter seemed enamored and highly impressed with the drug dealer. If he were from Chicago, the questions and impression would have been much coarser and antagonistic. She was gloating.

Your Dad is Italian but you don't look italian at all and you're very light skin. Being born in 1981 means you didn't grow up on 70s or 80s but 90s.

He didn’t claim to have grown up in 1970s. His reference was to the ones who were of that generation buying drugs and marijuana garnering the fortune his father made. BTW his father is of Czech heritage.
