Well, I tried this. Yes, it looks amazing. It doesn’t feel oily but it actually is oily. I used a very minimal amount of oil. I didn’t saturate the paper. Before I added it to a journal I’m making I thought I should test it. I put the oiled pages between paper towel sheets overnight. The paper towel showed a lot of oil staining. Then I put the pieces between sheets of copy paper so I could better see if there was more oil that might show up. I’ve been doing this for a few days and it just keeps leaching oil. I’m glad I did that or I may have ruined journal pages I’ve been working on. So, use caution. You may not feel the oil but you will see it on paper it comes in contact with. On the bright side, it makes the paper look and feel early nice.
I'm not the OP, but it's been a couple years so, no once it completely dries, it doesn't feel oily, but has sort of a soft feel. I haven't done this since around 2005, but best as I recall if anything it maybe feels like you put a little lotion on your hands, but definitely not really oily. We used tape runner back then, but had no trouble with that. Once it totally dries, which doesn't take very long, it still has the look of vellum. Long term I don't know if it would eventually look more opaque or not. I used to love this technique, & had completely forgotten about it till I saw this video pop up. Hopefully you've already tried it in the last couple of years, in which case I reckin your questions had already been answered, but if not, definitely give it a try. 😊 Also if you do use liquid glue, I would squirt some out on paper or a non stick mat & take a piece of sponge & sponge it on.
This works really well. I have tried it to day on different weight paper, printed and unprinted. On the black vellum I made I then printed on it with my printed. It is awesome and a huge game changer. Thanks for sharing
I’m thinking to print strategically on both sides - lined one side, floral on the back - the floral would only peek through…. Gorgeous ! Thanks for the vid !
I do this and use lavender oil. Got the idea from graphics fairy. They do the same thing to make washi tape. They have a freebie on their site that you can print out, cut and use. I like using the cotton. Looks so good!

I tried these and they came out perfectly! The oil dried and the paper feels just like vellum.. its truly amazing the transformation the paper takes! Thanks for sharing Betty! BTW.. I live in New Mexico so had no issues with the oil, our climate is pretty dry here.
I remember doing that in grade school. Used white paper, colored in whatever design, with crayons giving it a black border and lines( like a stained glass window),then using baby oil to make it like vellum. I will have to do this again with my print outs. Thank you for bringing this idea back to me.
Wow, this is a great idea. I love vellum, as you stated it is expensive. I'll have to test this out. Glad ur better. TYFS, take care, be blessed & have a glorious wkend!!
Hello Betty, new subscriber here 🇬🇧 I watched this video first thing yesterday morning and was so excited I had to leap out of bed to try it straight away! I didn’t have any baby oil so I used mineral oil and that worked great. I now have a large bottle baby oil so I’m guessing I’ll soon have a gazillion sheets of ‘vellum’! Lol. Thanks so much for this video. I’ve just done a video myself and have of course linked to your video. Take care. Hugs, Dee xox 🥰💐
Betty, I am glad you are doing a bit better. You need to take care of you. We will be here when you are able. Thank you for all you do. Cool technique.
Love love love this technique!!! Thank you for sharing, Betty🌷 I have only watched a few of your videos so far (but plan to binge watch...lol)... Curious... What is doodle paper? Blessings from the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state~~~

It’s so great to see you Betty & you sound great, pray you’re doing much better! You’re a genius, that’s amazing, who would of thought! TFS! Have a blessed weekend! Take good care of yourself! Prayers, love & hugs!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️
Did any one else ha e a problem with the oil seeping into the page ? Luckily l used the sample vellum as personal journal storage so l didn't wreck an entire journal gift. But how do l overcome this problem? I let the paper dry overnight on towels but still had problems with the oil leaking onto the underpages. Help please!
I wonder if a very thin coat of diluted PVA glue with water would seal it? Or would that totally change the effect? Hm...Maybe those varnish sprays artists use to seal oil paintings?
I didn’t have any issues with mine at all, but I seen several people comment that the oils seeped through. Maybe the climate has something to do with it? I even laid mine out on paper bags to see if it would leak…
Glad you are getting better! So hard when our vision is wonky. How in the world did you ever come up with this idea? It's crazy amazing! Lol! 👏 Fantastic idea! I'm new to the craft and haven't bought vellum yet due to the price, but I sure love the effect! I will be trying this out once I get baby oil! I bet you're hands are very nice and soft! Thanks for sharing! I can't wait to see your flowers! P.s. can you please tell me what the tracing paper and the darker paper (craft colorish) is and where you got it. You used them tonight. Thank you!
Hello, I have a question ❓ I'm researching on RUclips whether to (just) use normal white copy paper OR use tracing paper to make faux vellum, have you tried tracing paper at all? I've also heard from a RUclipsr that the oils (could) possibly come OFF and spoil the next plain paper in our journals, im trying to research all this before I invest in tracing paper or copy paper, plus run the possibility of saturating my new journal. Thank you for any advice you can give me,...
I think the "faux vellum" has to get quite hot for any oils to re-release; like in a hot car in summer. (depending on where you live of course), but the baby oil, if released, would just make certain other papers right next to it "vellum like" anyway, right? Why not make a "faux journal" with one sheet of this method, and two plain pieces of paper sandwiching it, and see how they fare? You'll have only used 3 pieces of copy paper, which shouldn't break the bank in the interests of science lol.
I haven’t had any trouble with the oil coming off of my “vellum” on to any other items, but several people had said that they had that issue. My thought is maybe the climate has something to do with that or how long it takes for something to actually dry? I truly don’t have a clue.
I’m sure you can use any kind of oil - I just don’t know how long each oil would take to dry or if they would still be oily afterwards. I will probably test some different oils.
@@BettysCustomDesigns Oh, that would be great! Thank you for replying! I love your videos, and your papers! I have a few of your Etsy listings in my Dropbox! 🥰
Omg! This is insane!!! I will be doing this pronto! I always like the look of vellum but, yes I'm gonna say it 😜 I'm very miserly! 🤣 I'm so glad I found your channel....you just popped up yesterday on my home page! I'm now subscribed and looking forward to your videos ❤️
I have a template given to me BY the post office to use to slide my envelopes through to measure thickness. I use it. And my cards STILL come back marked extra postage needed, too thick to be mailed as an envelope!
So glad you are back, Betty! And with another great idea!! Shingles and eyes just don't mix. I'm glad you were able to get to a specialist. Hope to see a flower video!!
I looked into other people doing this and it seeps into other pages next to it and will ruin your journals. Yikes. Just don’t want anyone ruining their hard work.
if you use the wrong kind of oil, it definitely can. you have to use an oil that will absorb into tge paper and actually “dry”. I laid mine out on a paper bag over night to see if anything transferred abc nothing did.
@@BettysCustomDesigns Try putting some weight on them, like pressing them in a book, and see if you get any stains then. I have done this baby oiling paper before :D If you put weigh on the papers, they will start to stain. And as I was just sorting my papers and accidentally put all the papers together in a pile the other day, including these baby oil ones instead of leaving them individually housed with paper towels between them, I can say they indeed do continue to stain even after being squished between paper towels with a heavy weight on them for a month xD So I think they will always stain other papers when you squish them. I've seen people suggest that you have to seal them off with for example watered down glue to make sure the oil doesn't seep out but idk I haven't actually tried it myself because, well something's just always come up and I've forgotten to finish experimenting. XD
I tried different types of paper for this hack and was COMPLETELY unsuccesful. It is oily and just looks like wet paper. I did try it exactly the way shown and even tried a little less but it was just not doing it for me. Before commenting how awesome this hack is, maybe try first?
What scares me is that oil does not evaporate, so will whatever it rests on will get oil spots? You should really test things longer term before suggesting people do this. If a beautiful journal is ruined…….
Good morning Ms. Betty - no worries. Once the paper “dried”, nothing transferred. I had actually set my pieces on a paper bag after they were “dry” because I wanted to see if the oil would transfer, but it didn’t. =). No journals to ruin. ;)
Interesting u say that cuz by mistake I put oil paper after I thought it was dry of course on top of blank paper and to my horror it stained thru ... and is STILL bleeding a month later!!!!! Not sure why this is. I am VERY lucky I found that mistake cuz that paper was going into a journal but was just too tired that night.
