These are the true founders of modern day 50 freestyle races

I believe the guy who raced Jager in the semi finals runs a club team in Texas. He was actually ahead for for a bit, but couldn't hold Jager off.

Sonny - thanks for the video breakdown - Jager is legendary as a true sprint powerhouse.
I was looking for an old clip of his to watch, and was pleasantly surprised to find this. Mad respect to the original speed merchants!

One thing about those blocks is they don't have the anti slippery surface on them, so you really have to wipe them down or you'll slip straight off during the start.

Oh yes, they are like bars of soap ahaha, another reason why grab starts where used over track!

The reason they stood at the back of the blocks and then stepped forward upon "take your mark" is because that was required by the rules for long course at that time. Short course, the rules allowed them to position their feet prior to take your mark.
The problem wasn't so much being tired if some jerk false started in your heat. The problem was you would get cold after climbing out of the water to try again. Disallowing any false starts was a huge step in the right direction.
At the time, multiple dolphin kicks were starting to phase in. These guys hadn't trained that their whole lives which is why they had such short underwaters off the blocks.
By today's standards, they both hold their head too high, especially Jager. It was their successor, Popov, who showed that a lower head position was more effective.

That’s why they are called blocks

For me, the real shock was just 2 years later both guys were beat at the Olympics by Alexander Popov, and none of them swam as quick as both Jaeger or Bionidi’s time here.
