    I didn't know it was standard for people to peel their apples. I just eat them with the skin, it gives it a nice consistency in my opinion

      It depends on the apples. Some have this waxy layer on their skin that can't be washed by anything else than dishwashing detergent and I'd honestly rather not eat that haha

    It's not dangerous if you're using a paring knife, which is a small knife that is made for peeling things such as apple skins and it's also not able to penetrate human skin. If you are using a chef's knife (larger) as shown in the video, you will definitely bleed or seriously damage your finger if you cut yourself.

    As a young child I’d become very stressed watching my grandad peel apples this way.
    There was also the added fun that he had lost most of the feeling in his fingers from his work, so on the rare occasion a cut happened, it was was usually faint worthy.
    All that said, I peel them with a knife too :p

      Most people in the US only peel apples for baby food and to make pies. The rest of the time, we wash them (wavy outside) then just eat them.

    My Panamanian Great Grandma told her daughters that if you could peel an apple with a knife in a perfect spiral without it breaking that you would have a long happy marriage someday. When I heard this at 12 I laughed but also took the challenge every time I peeled my apples. Now I'm a pro with the knife. (Also happily married but that's just because my sweetheart is awesome & patient with my crazy antics ☺️)

    I'll admit that I've learnt how to do many things with just a knife, not only from being raised in a southern us state but because of survival situations. Easier to have the skills to use a good knife many ways than having to stress and struggle if something happens.

    That’s actually how my Granny peeled apples (from Ireland)!!Seems in general methods like that used to be taught but with vegetable peelers the need has gone down. Still cool though.

    i remember my native american grandmother slapped the knife out of my hand and told me "NO, the skin is a GIFT, it’s GOOD FOR YOU!" and i always eat the apples with skin. no matter what.

    i hated apple peel as a kid, but now that i'm an adult that has to prepare my own food, i've learned to eat it w the skin on. plus there's more nutrients that way. one of those rare instances where being lazy is healthier for you

    My mom taught me how to use a knife to cut both oranges and apples. She's also really good at juggling fruits with her leg included. It amazes me when I see her doing it

    OMG this is how I was taught to peel things and my early twenties friend freaked out and thought I was going to cut myself. Lol I'm in the US. I just rolled my eyes. He wouldn't listen. Haha

    The only way i peel apples is with the tool i have that also cores them and cuts them into a spiral. Perfect for apple crisps or pies or tarts or muffins or apple sauce or apple butter. Grind the apples for cider and hard cider. Filter the cider for apple juice.

    honestly I feel like knives give a person more control as you can put your thumb over the dull back and they come in various sizes and sharpness. I feel like peelers are just cuts waiting to happen.

    I used an old Potato Peeler for my Apples 🍎 it’s quick and easy too, and the Top of the Potato Peeler doubles to help get out Yucky Spots on the Apple 🍎 too.

    Those are people in the US who live in cities, outside of big cities and especially in rural states there are many people who live a more rugged lifestyle and use knives for most things.

    I just wash it and eat it from the bottom all the way to the stem, that way you don’t have to throw anything away.

    Depends on how you were raised. Most of my family uses a knife. For me a peeler is more dangerous. Got my hand once as a kid and never went back. Lol

    My mom peels apples with a knife, but I just never peel the apples or potatoes 😂 so I’ve never learned how to do it with a knife. I only peel apples to make apple pie/ apple crisp. And I rarely make it. I guess I’ll try next time.

    That skin contains over 95% of pesticides that are on/in that apple (if apple is produced in the conventional way). So pealing it DOES make sense.

    When I first peeled stuff, I peeled towards me and got chastised by my coworkers. I tried it the American way and immediately hurt myself.
    Never did that shit again. I have a lot more control over my movements when I peel towards myself.

    My family has always used a knife to peel fruits or vegetables (Apples, potatoes, carrots etc.). This is more of a generational thing (that can be taught) and/or safety thing than anything else. 😅
