If you do that then around 2cm - 2.5cm of firmish play half way between the front and rear sprockets will be pretty safe (without pushing down or lifting up too hard) Check it every month or so, it only takes a couple of seconds

There must be some play in the chain.how much it should be?
I would suggest you to refer to your bike's manual, as every bike have different settings. For my bike its a play of 2 cm (approximately)
