His first 5 are. Docs the name is superior lyricism and beats. It’s better than album number 2 and 3. He took everything that worked and made a best album . Malpractice is dope and almost as good as album 4. Dark side is good, but not as good as muddy, docs, or Mal practice
I had the original clear red tape, somebody borrowed it and never returned it, went to buy another but was red but not the clear! I was so pissed! In any case Reggie has been my favorite rapper since I was in high school. And not just because I'm from NJ. I just love dope lyrics.
Redman is a OG an a legend,an one of the greatest rhyme spitta'z of all time,y'all need to recognize Reggie shyt'n on a opp,hip hop hall of famer, hands down stupid!😆🥹😂🤣😄😁Real Talk!!! 💯
Hardcore was the one that starts Redman for me. That gutter aliteration verse. It was right up front and he came out sounding like he was punching you in the face on that tape. I almost forgot about “Brothers On My Jock”. But on that he sounded almost like K-Solo…plus it came right on the heels of one of my favorite EPMD deep cuts, “Rap Is Outta Control”.

I’m 61 years old and had all the Redman joints coming the love for EPMD. All I can say is what a time. If you where there you understand that you are talking about. Keep them coming, you are the best!!!
I was in high school when this dropped. I remember when my older brother went to the mall and copped this joint. That night I went into his room and made a dub tape of it on his JVC double cassette boom box with the CD player on top. Didn’t listen to it that night. I went to school the next day and didn’t even put it in my Walkman. I waited until I got home from school went into my room closed the door, put it into my little boombox hooked my headphones up, turned it up loud, and layed back on my bed, closed my eyes and……………😳. I had no idea the journey that Redman was about to take me on. I love this album! It is still my favorite Redman album to date. I already was a Redman fan before I listened to it, but after I listened to it…….it solidified Redman as all time great for me. And then when he dropped another masterpiece in Muddy Waters…….😮
This is my favorite Redman album. And to think, I saw an interview with Redman and he said this was one of his least favorite albums because he was in a dark place at the time.
Same here. It was straight to the point from the intro to Tonight's Da Nite Remix. Barely any skits which is always a bonus and his punchlines/flow was nasty on this.
Redman was getting his flowers right away in 93 - on pac’s “strictly…” album, the first rapper pac name-check’s on “representin’ 93” is REDMAN Redman was one of them ones - all the legends….pac, big, nas…all thought red was a monster since red actually was putting in work and blowing up just before those three blew up
As a dude from NJ I appreciate the love he gives to Rodman! Completely underrated! Also 1994 I was 25 and living my best life and these records were the soundtrack to my life. 💪🏽🔥
Salute to Red for reppin our hometown Newark to the fullest. Can't Wait is my favorite joint off of Dare Iz A Darkside. Erick Sermon freaked that Mary Jane Girls sample and vocal on that joint! My favorite Red album is still Whut? Thee Album. Blow Your Mind, Tonight's Da Night and Time 4 Some Action are 3 of the dopest joints ever on one album.
I'll forever put Redman in my hypothetical top 5 convo. This and Muddy Waters are both always in rotatio, they actually have become my house cleaning music albums. Only in my late twenties did I realise how consistently I played him and his albums are up there with Outkast for the best 90s hip hop albums ever made.
I appreciate this video, I Was born in 1990 in NY but I went back an bought or listened to the albums I heard were classics from this era like Cube’s first 3 Albums, Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders, Chronic and Doggystyle, Southernplaylisticcadilacmusic An of course Illmatic and Ready to Die. I Kina slept on Redmans discography but imma check this album out.
Your sophomore album is one of the hardest challenges and tests for every artist in the game.. Muddy Waters of course was the penultimate release by Redman but the fact that he produced a majority of his second album and was able to still find variations in his flow without sounding repetitive the entire record says a ton about his imagination and artistry. Great album AND great take! 💯
Dare Iz A Dark Side is my all time favorite album. 💿 My little brother gave me that album for my 14th birthday. I'm 44, and I STILL can recite that album from start to finish, word for word, including the intro and skits. Redman also re-introduced me to Johnny Guitar Watson and the Mary Jane Girls. (mom dukes had MJG records, and pops had JGW records). In fact, I'm bout to twist one up, hop in the Lexus, and listen to it on the way to pick up those late night buffalo wings. With extra blue cheese on the side. If you're a real hip hop fan you know what it is. 😎 💨
absolute classic and easily one of the most ambitious hip hop records of the 90s. not alot of people loved this record when it hit but those who did, knew it was special
Mentioning The Chronic fits with this review so much because The Chronic told our generation it was ok to smoke weed and Dare Iz a Darkside (along with Ready to Die and Illmatic) is what we smoked weed to! The whole album is a vibe and it really solidified Redman is an MC. Thank you for your review!
I appreciate this album so much. I never hear anyone speak on the album. I kinda heard Red doesn't really like this album because of how he felt during that time.
Yo Bo! Bro we were blowing this album up in TRINIDAD when it dropped!! When you said "Bobyahead2dis" I legit got chills and goosebumps. Thank you for letting people know or reminding them that Reggie and this album are legendary!
I walked to school damn near every day with that tape, the purple tape, liquid swords, ATLiens, Explicit Game (Dru Down), Ready to Die, the Diary. What a time to be alive.
The soundtrack of my senior year of high school, and the reason I grew a fro then too. Ironically, I'm not much of a weed smoker, so I don't think I've ever heard this album while high...
That elevator music intro was so lovely to me, I did some research and it turns out that was from a real song: Sassafras Girl by Portland, Oregon based group Pleasure. He also used it in the N.I.N skit from Muddy Waters. I could listen to it all day!!
Yup. He definitely carried it to over to Muddy Waters. Red also have the best skits hands down. Ice Cream Man from Red Gone Wild is my favorite skit of his.
I’m enjoying these ‘94 music takes! The breakdown of the album, the reception at the time! It really helps to understand the album and its place. I wasn’t a redman fan in 94. I didn’t pay attention until Docs the name. But I have a ton of respect for his place in hip hop. I also heard the interview where Red said that he doesn’t listen to this album.
I was in high school when Dare Iz a Darkside dropped and i wore that cassette out!!!! I still have it buried in my basement somewhere. If you were into hip hop in the early to mid 90's, what a time to be alive!! So many legendary albums came out and NOBODY SOUNDED THE SAME!!! So many diverse sounds and styles from so many places, from east to west to down south and the midwest.
Bomani, Redman is Top 10, I know Allen Iverson stated that Redman was his favorite Rapper of All Time, which I can't be mad at that. I also remember NBA 2K1 on Dreamcast menu screen only had Da Goodness Instrumental, which was the only menu track you could listen too, lol. Redman had a dope track called Open Fire on Erick Sermon's Album Double or Nothing, I think it's the last Song on that Album. As always, Great Assessment!
Wowwww. I know I've been living under a rock for a minute now, but I had no idea my man Bomani was doing his thing here. I always been a huge fan from back during the Dan Le Batard days. This literally made my day! Mad love and respect my dude! Glad to see you doing your thing, you deserve every ounce of it
I bought this tape(it was red)classic I have it on wax also. S/O HurricaneG & Ksolo. 💯Green Eyed Bandit masterpiece. Bomani J gets one point on the package on this…respect ✌🏾
This is the best breakdown of one of my favorite albums of all time! 💪🏿 People thought I was weird because I was always bumping it. Redman was spitting 🔥 Class of 94
Red himself says he doesn't like this album...in which i would tell him in person..bro you are absolutely crazy!!! Dare iz a Darkside is an absolute classic!!
This is my favorite Album of All time. I still listen to his first 3 Albums till this day without skipping 1 track. Dare Iz a Dark side influenced my mc style more than anything else
Definitely my favorite Reggie album and what made me a fan of him. I’ve never smoked a blunt laced with dust (to my knowledge anyway) but I’d imagine listening to this album is the closest thing to experiencing the aftermath of doing so 😂
I knew of Redman from how high but I never really listened to his music until I heard hardcore for the first time. After that I listened to Dare is a Darkside and I knew it would be one of my favorites of all time.
Boom. This album came out when I was in school and for those who weren’t around at this time, CDs were becoming the thing but cassettes were still the go to. Method Man was my favorite rapper at the time and I got cassette from Nobody Beats the Wiz when it came out and you couldn’t tell me nothin. A week later my homeboy brings this Redman CD to school. That Rockafella track was going hard so I traded my Tical for his Darkside album. It was supposed to be for just a day but I ended having it for almost a week and the whole time we debating who’s better between Meth and Red just for them to get together on How High a few months later. Some good times four sure
I love Dare Iz A Darkside! I have songs on my gym playlist. I recently saw Cypress Hill in concert and I really appreciated the instrumental play by the group.
You are spot on with the analysis. One of my favorite rappers and hip hop albums. I was crushed when he said he hated Dare Iz A Darkside 🤣 But I get not looking back on dark times in your life. Most people I know say Muddy Waters is their favorite.
All 3 of Redman’s first 3 albums are undisputed classics, but Dare Iz A Darkside is by far my favorite of the 3

His first 5 are. Docs the name is superior lyricism and beats. It’s better than album number 2 and 3. He took everything that worked and made a best album . Malpractice is dope and almost as good as album 4. Dark side is good, but not as good as muddy, docs, or Mal practice

Don’t forget Redman on Brothers on My Jock and Hardcore from EPMDs 3rd album
Hardcore was the one that starts Redman for me. That gutter aliteration verse. It was right up front and he came out sounding like he was punching you in the face on that tape. I almost forgot about “Brothers On My Jock”. But on that he sounded almost like K-Solo…plus it came right on the heels of one of my favorite EPMD deep cuts, “Rap Is Outta Control”.
Bomani just earned 1000 cool points for this. All time classic album.
