  • The video contains a simple and visual explanation of how furosemide and bumetanide, loop diuretics, work to encourage the kidneys to excrete more water and sodium. We cover some basics about how the nephron works and look in detail at the action of loop diuretics on the sodium-potassium-chloride co-transporter on the ascending loop of the loop of Henle. We also talk about the indications, some practical tips on using loop diuretics, adverse effects and contraindications.

Every patient put in these meds should be shown a vid like this. It definitely helps to understand the meds and motivate taking them routinely even though the constant bathroom trips are annoying

I've never seen this concept explained so well. What's missing though is another effect of accumulation of potassium in the cell and its subesquent diffusion into the tubule - this causes positive membrane potential which causes Ca2+ and Mg2+ to be secreted, an important effect of loop diuretics.

Zero to finals, thanks so much! My doc is a professor, unfortunately, i learn so much with your channel than I ever do from my onco. God bless you dear! I've been dealing with that problem for years because my lymph system has been destroyed, my oncologist told me there's no solution. I don't have heart failure, but my left kidney can become big sometimes and my chest can be full of liquid, I can hear a weazing sound from my left lung. My legs are big and my left arm as well. To the contrary, my right arm becomes skinnier every day. I wonder if furosemide would help me.

Thank you for the well-explained lecture. Could you please explain why lasix increases urinary sodium while decreasing urine osmolality. Lasix is used to treat hyponatremia in SIADH by increasing serum sodium and getting rid of more water than sodium but the fact that lasix increases urine sodium while decreasing urine osmolality seems contradictory. I appreciate your time in answering this or directing me to a resource in advance.
