not joking, I thought this episode was just to explain a bit more lore, and it went in that direction for a bit, that “rumor” Inari was talking about, then we suddenly get jumped by Sora and all downhill, wonder what happens next. worried about those two today though.
Don't worry, Suzune, I actually enjoyed it when you almost knocked me unconscious, and - since it was for practicing your flirting skills - you can feel free to use me as your "flirting bag" anytime you need.
Once again we're just chilling at our desk. In front of us stand Touka (Lamy) and Suzune (Nene). Inari (Fubuki) is just chilling at the front of the classroom, one arm holding onto the other by the elbow as she just stares in our direction. Over by the windows, Saki (Aki) and Hanabi (Matsuri) seem to be having a discussion. Focusing on Saki and Hanabi, we hear Hanabi commenting the the mood at the school sucks. She wonders if it's because of the rumour going around the school, and glances back at us as she says this. Saki, who was staring out the window, glances around the room, before focusing on Hanabi. "You don't believe that, do you Hanabi?" she asks, to which Hanabi quickly insists she doesn't, though she's still watching us from the corner of her eye. She adds that Inari definitely is convinced about the rumour though, and that they need to do something about this rumour and the atmosphere it's created. Saki seems concerned as well, asking if they need to do some research, since if it's related to the school, the library should have more information. Hanabi however interrupts, telling her that she's already checked the school library, but couldn't find any information related to the rumour. Saki seems shocked by this, wondering how that's even possible. Hanabi doesn't seem to have an answer and just tells us that she'll ask her grandfather about it later, suggesting that whatever this rumour is, it's been around for a long time. Hanabi then goes on to say that she'll investigate around town too, since if the same thing has happened before (presumably in reference to the missing classmates), but nothing happened because of it, then that should prove to Inarit he rumour is nonsense. Nodding, Saki says that's a good idea, and that she'll ask her mother as well, since she once attended this school. Hanabi thanks Saki for the help before stretching and stating how she hates having to dwell on these sorts of things, and how it's best to clear things up as soon as possible. Saki agrees, pointing out it's almost summer vacation and they need to start it on a good note! Smiling and nodding, the two seem motivated to find the answers and end the school year positively! While Saki and Hanabi are having this conversation, Suzune and Touka are in front of us. Suzune seems a little nervous as she greets us, asking how we're doing in before trailing off uncertainly. It's at this point Touka speaks up, encouraging Suzune to just speak to us clearly and directly. Suzune looks nervous, but gathering her courage she bows, and exclaims a brief apology for hitting us recently. She reveals she wasn't intentionally trying to hurt us, but instead trying to get physically intimate. Sensing a potential misunderstand, Touka steps in again, clarifying that Suzune is trying to work on her flirting skills, and was using us for practice. Nodding enthusiastically Suzune says she was just trying to bond with us, so when she hit us in the arm, it wasn't meant to be a painful blow at all. Again she apologizes, asking us if we can forgive her. Apparently we do forgive her, because after a moments pause she seems very relieved, leaning back and letting out a long sigh of relief. Touka seems satisfied, pointing out that her advice of just apologizing directly was all that was needed. We then learn that Inari (Fubuki) told Suzune something, which scared Suzune into thinking her actions might have caused us to never see each other again. Touka is surprised, and a bit disappointed that Suzune actually is taking rumours seriously and tells her not to worry. Seeing the confused look on our faces, Touka gives a quick apology, before explaining that Inari has been telling people strange things. Suzune starts to panic at the thought of telling us about the rumour, wondering if that's a good idea. Touka insists it'd be best if we knew. Right as she's about to tell us what Inari has been saying, all of a sudden the world flashes and for a brief second the class is dark and empty, except for us and a mysterious woman (Sora). She stands before us, arms behind her back, staring at us with flat expressionless eyes. Just as quickly as the vision appears though it vanishes, and Touka is still on the verge of telling us about the rumour, seemingly unaware of what just happened. Just as she's about to tell us about rumour though, our vision fades to black, there's the sound of shaking and static, that coincides with static flickering across our now blackened vision. Though we can't see anything, we can hear Suzune shouting in alarm to Touka, wondering why everything has suddenly gone black (which tells us this isn't just happening to us). Suzune continues to shout in confusion and disbelief, clearly terrified. We then also hear Touka, who is also panicking and over and over saying she doesn't know what's happening. Suzune starts screaming 'No, no no!' while Touka haltingly wonders if perhaps the rumours were true after all. Then their voices are gone, and all we hear is the sound of static.
So from what I've gathered, the rumour is about the missing students. Previously Inari was convinced they were all sick, but something has happened that's not only changed our mind, but convinced her we're somehow involved. Thanks to a reminder about the site from Chan-b, I looked again and the site states that they have superstitions at the school that negative interactions with transfer students brings bad luck. So the reason everyone is looking at us strangely is because they suspect (or at least Inari does) that us coming here brought bad luck and that's why people aren't showing up. As Chan-b also pointed out, the site also was updated to state that, in the past, the school collapsed. Investigations officially said it was due to a gas leak caused by an earthquake. Locals from the time apparently mentioned the earthquake, though there are no official records of an earthquake happening on that day. There's also discrepancies between the students on file, and the missing people reported. So presumably Sora's character is from that previous collapse. Inari, Saki and Hanabi were silent though, which makes me wonder if the strange darkness was localized just around us and our desk. Of course, it could also just be budget and scripting limitations that left them from having lines... so hard to say for sure what's going on there. Either way though, their reaction confirms this isn't in our imagination. The static / interference sounds and effects are interesting though. Is this actually meant to be a game we're inside of?
Thank you for the summary and theory. If I may point out, Touka and Suzune only mentions the noise when the darkness and static noises start. I am suspicious of this, but unable to prove anything just yet. Perhaps they are still in the classroom seeing everything as normal, but hearing what we hear. As for the other student, I agree with what you said in your follow up comment. Very interesting story they've cooked up, and there is an update to the website. From my limited japanese and from extrapolating from the kanji by referencing chinese(my mother tongue). The School collapsed previously and many staff members and students went missing, there were many unexplainable points about the incident. 1. The safety of missing staff and students are still unclear 2. On the day of the incident, neighbors of the school reported a earthquake, however the observatory did not have such event on their records. 3. The number of missing people did not match the people in the namelist used for roll calls. The police treated it was a gas leak and dismissed it. Just some extra lore bits
