As someone who adores the Monster Hunter series, let me quickly mention something else disturbing about the Nerscylla. That torn coat that acts as a veil, and those poisonous crystals on her back? Yeahhh, that's not her webbing, and that's not her poison, that's the collected skin and poison of a Bird Wyvern known as Gypceros, which she wears proudly to help protect herself. If you look closely at the hanging cocoons in the Area of the Sunken Hollow with all the webbing, you will barely see that they're *skinned Gypceros corpses.* Give Nerscylla some credit, she knows how to intimidate rookie hunters!
When it is crawling on netted ceilings, it drips poison. It's mandables are expanded by hydraulics and strong with poison. The Shrouded Nercylla is more terrifying in combat. It fights in more open spaces, even in the dunes. Hunts khezu that gives its electric resistance. Instead of poison, it has paralytic toxins on its back. In open spaces, it swings openly and aggressively, trying to nail with its paralysis spike before pouncing. And finally... It can dig underground.
@Madfox Back then, they didn't want to create Dragons because of how obvious it be. so they challenge themselves in the 1st game to be all Wyvern type monsters. Between the 1st and 2nd game, they got really creative, and slowly loosen a bit in later on to create Dragon Monsters. They went to some lengths to get an idea of how they would move, how each Monster of some family species would be different from one another.

My therapist was genuinely confused about why I was freaking out so much, until he played it himself and chucked the controller. I think he and I were talking about that thing for a few hours after my session ended. To any Darksiders fans, like myself, don’t go raving about how Silitha isn’t on the list despite being in the introductory clips. She isn’t terrifying enough for this list and her boss fight isn’t that memorable, in comparison to these spiders. She’s gorgeous to look at and utterly traumatizing if she was in real life, but she’s not really scary as a threat. Her personality and lore: top-tier sadist. Her boss fight: Spider-Man her face enough times and she falls through the floor.
I agree with you silitha, but I'd put her on the list cause it took me about 3 days to finish that fight. I kept turning the game off, shes so repetitive I thought my ears were bleeding at one point 😅

#6 Actually the music ripoff thing, a lot of Undertale's music tracks are remixed versions of other Undertale tracks, and Mad Mew Mew is'nt even the 1st time that praticuler track is remixed. The Mad Dummy's track is actually a remix of Muppet's theme, witch in and of it's self is a remix of Napstablok's battle theme.
One of my favourites is the Phantom from Devil May Cry. While it's not very scary, it is certainly intimidating with how quickly it can kill you. It's also intimidating with how it hunts you down a couple of times. You're just walking down a hallway when suddenly this demonic lava spider comes charging at you, and while you can beat it in this scenario, at first you're likely to flee into a nearby room. And the design! A giant spider with armour and lava as its flesh which can form a scorpion tail to skewer Dante with. It's less something to be afraid of because of what it is in the world, more something to be afraid of because of what it poses to the player.
They aren't rip-offs of each other. Undertale's soundtrack makes use of a lot of leitmotifs all throughout, and each of the songs that have been mentioned in this thread so far (Ghost Fight, Dummy!, Pathetic House, Spider Dance, and Mad Mew Mew's theme) simply share that same leitmotif.

One thing that doesn't tend to come up, sadly, is that Nerscylla has some of the most sentai armor in the Monster Hunter series. I really hope it comes back like the forever recurring Rathalos (whom has been outclassed so many times he's practically that game's Worf just to show off how dangerous the new thing is...)

I'll just say this. The only time I feel TP actually landed it's attempts at horror was during the initial part of the Armoghoma fight, and it got completely nullified by the sheer catharsis factor of repeatedly slamming it with giant stone fists and then using bomb arrows on its true form. Also having *Midna* freak out over it is a nice touch
My mom is absolutely horrified of spiders. I used to be pretty fearful of them, too. Then I started watching Lucas The Spider, and now I think spiders are some of the cutest things in the whole freaking world. But, even before Lucas, I did have some level of respect for them. There is a surprising amount of legends where spiders are actually portrayed as guardians or little helpers. Personally, my favorite story about any spider is the one about a spider who spun a web above the bed of a woman suffering from nightmares and trapped all her nightmares in its web while allowing good dreams to enter her mind through a tiny hole in the middle of its web. Yup, it's the story of how the dream catcher came into being. Now, I still wouldn't necessarily like to be anywhere too close to spiders, especially unexpectedly, but I do find them really cute. In a creepy sort of way. I'm trying to get my mom to check out Lucas The Spider in hopes that he'll be able to help her with her arachnophobia, but she's apparently so terrified that she won't even look at the little cutie pie. Maybe I should have her simply listen to one of his videos first before showing her the visuals. Maybe the sound of his adorable voice and his antics will peek her interests enough for her to ignore her fear and finally give the little guy a chance. Wish me luck!
I’m surprised the Spider from Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon didn’t make it on here so night as well get it out of the way for ya as an honorable mention: It was originally a normal spider until it was possessed by a ghost and grew to about 5 times it’ size. Upon this, it layed dozens of eggs and took over the professor’s mansion. This boss was the first boss in the game yet it was fairly difficult. To beat it you have to first set up a trap for it using the torches of the knights in the room. Then you have to stun the spider and drag a ball of its webbing to the torch and using it as a fuse to light the entire web on fire! It destroys the wall each time you hit it, and you also have to dodge all of its spider kids, the poison it spits, and the knights themselves! I’d have been pissed off at it if it wasn’t so satisfying to beat all its puzzles. Upon beating it, the spider shirks to its original size and leaves, taking 10,001 all of its kin with her right through a frightened Luigi.

+PhantomofMalus Eh, if you play up how horrifically the Chaos Flame transformed the witches and wrought ruin (both directly and through the demons it creates), it might fit on a Halloween list. Duke's Dear Freja still has them beat in creepiness, though. Plus, mechanically, Quelaag's more of a magic fire warrior fight than a spider fight, so Freja's more qualified in that department as well.
Muffet's theme is already a remix of the Dummy's theme, which in turn is a remix of Napstablook's theme, so that fact that the new bosses theme is another remix of that isn't surprising.
Wait.. people actually like Freja? Armoured Spider and Quelaag are pretty good spider bosses, but.. what's good about Freja? I don't really get the appeal. The fight mainly just consists of the player running around in a circle until attacking because the small spiders keep respawning and that's pretty much it. The attacks the boss uses don't really add any sort of a dynamic or meaningful strategy to the fight. All they mean is that the player shouldn't attack or should run for the other head, and since that's the answer to all attacks, the fight kinda turns into a blur. The fight is the same almost the entire time, even if the animations change since you deal with those the same way.
Well, Freja's more of a spider than Quelaag, and Freja has more mechanics of a spider boss than Quelaag, so that's probably what put her on this list instead. Plus the lore, though if you ask me both have pretty fitting backstories for a spooky list...
Sure, it is more of a spider out of the three, but as a fight it's worse than Rom the Vacuous Spider. It's among the list of bad DS2 bosses. And lore wise I find Quelaag's plight far more interesting, because she has a proper motivation to fight the player, which the player ends up learning after beating her, making it sort of a nasty guilt-tripping twist. As pure fights, Armoured Spider and Quelaag are far superior, and I'd say Armoured Spider is probably the best one thanks to its somewhat fast pace. Quelaag's main downfall is how those lava pools can sometimes cause the fight slow down, while Armoured Spider keeps the pacing quite consistent.
I haven't fought the Armored Spider (haven't been able to secure a copy of Demon's Souls), so I can't say much about that. Now, these lists ultimately come down to personal knowledge and tastes of the maker. I don't know how much Josh actually knows about Quelaag and the general lore of the Soulsbourne series (maybe he chose Freja partly because her story is mostly self-contained, as opposed to having to go into the whole backstory of the First Flame and the witches' downfall to understand what Quelaag is). And, as far as this list is concerned, the "actual spider, not spider motif" rule kind of prioritizes Freja over Quelaag. Now, I'll admit, I do agree that the Quelaag fight is a lot more fun than Freja; I don't know where he got the idea that so many people like the fight itself.

say, I've got a dumb idea, and I'm not even sure if you take suggestions (maybe Patreon, but I am a bit paranoid when it comes to finances), but uh... top 5/10 video-game inspired stories? I'm talking things like SAO (okay, bad example), Homestuck, the like. I'm aware I've said this once before, I'll stop after this one.
The Nerscylla is also BRUTAL on how it hunts it's prey. A regular Nerscylla will attack a Gypceros, a Flying Wyvern with rubbery skin and a poison sac, and the Shrouded Nerscylla will hunt a Khezu, another Flying Wyvern with an electric sac. After they kill their prey, they tear off their skin and strap it on their backs. That's where the crystal looking objects on their backs come from.
8 I think the widowmaker from jak 2 should get an honourable mention, it looks creepy, the scuttle noise it make as it chases you will make your skin crawl, and it's CONSTANTLY lunging foward while shrieking loudly, "shudders" it was only through sheer force of will I managed by get past that part, and when it was over I breathed the biggest sigh of relief

I'll always remember Yakuza from Metroid Fusion, especially since it kicked my ass as a kid. It's a giant spider creature that can breath fire. After you deal enough damage, it's legs get blown off where it then starts to spin jumping in the air using the Space Jump and shoots miniature legs at you as projectiles. Pretty creative attacks I have to say. Let's not forget that awesome boss music.
I'm pissed that I never figured out you could break free from its slam attack. I always thought once you got grabbed, you just had to sit there and take it.

Muffet legit makes me want to beat my severe arachnophobia. Seriously, for the longest time so much as seeing a spider or even typing the word would trigger anxiety attacks in me. But Muffet is just so adorable she made me re-evaluate my greatest fear. Also because I was a dummy and used up my Ruins spider goodies in my first playthrough of Undertale I had to survive three turns (thank god for that awesome music and Sans's hot dogs lol).

Then I started watching Lucas The Spider, and now I think spiders are some of the cutest things in the whole freaking world. But, even before Lucas, I did have some level of respect for them. There is a surprising amount of legends where spiders are actually portrayed as guardians or little helpers. Personally, my favorite story about any spider is the one about a spider who spun a web above the bed of a woman suffering from nightmares and trapped all her nightmares in its web while allowing good dreams to enter her mind through a tiny hole in the middle of its web. Yup, it's the story of how the dream catcher came into being. Now, I still wouldn't necessarily like to be anywhere too close to spiders, especially unexpectedly, but I do find them really cute. In a creepy sort of way. I'm trying to get my mom to check out Lucas The Spider in hopes that he'll be able to help her with her arachnophobia, but she's apparently so terrified that she won't even look at the little cutie pie. Maybe I should have her simply listen to one of his videos first before showing her the visuals. Maybe the sound of his adorable voice and his antics will peek her interests enough for her to ignore her fear and finally give the little guy a chance. Wish me luck!

I’m surprised the Spider from Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon didn’t make it on here so night as well get it out of the way for ya as an honorable mention:
It was originally a normal spider until it was possessed by a ghost and grew to about 5 times it’ size. Upon this, it layed dozens of eggs and took over the professor’s mansion.
This boss was the first boss in the game yet it was fairly difficult. To beat it you have to first set up a trap for it using the torches of the knights in the room. Then you have to stun the spider and drag a ball of its webbing to the torch and using it as a fuse to light the entire web on fire! It destroys the wall each time you hit it, and you also have to dodge all of its spider kids, the poison it spits, and the knights themselves! I’d have been pissed off at it if it wasn’t so satisfying to beat all its puzzles.
Upon beating it, the spider shirks to its original size and leaves, taking 10,001 all of its kin with her right through a frightened Luigi.

In fairness, since this was a Halloween countdown, he was probably looking for a horrifying boss like the DDF instead of Quelaag, who's more tragic
+PhantomofMalus Eh, if you play up how horrifically the Chaos Flame transformed the witches and wrought ruin (both directly and through the demons it creates), it might fit on a Halloween list. Duke's Dear Freja still has them beat in creepiness, though.
Plus, mechanically, Quelaag's more of a magic fire warrior fight than a spider fight, so Freja's more qualified in that department as well.

Wait.. people actually like Freja? Armoured Spider and Quelaag are pretty good spider bosses, but.. what's good about Freja? I don't really get the appeal. The fight mainly just consists of the player running around in a circle until attacking because the small spiders keep respawning and that's pretty much it. The attacks the boss uses don't really add any sort of a dynamic or meaningful strategy to the fight. All they mean is that the player shouldn't attack or should run for the other head, and since that's the answer to all attacks, the fight kinda turns into a blur. The fight is the same almost the entire time, even if the animations change since you deal with those the same way.
Well, Freja's more of a spider than Quelaag, and Freja has more mechanics of a spider boss than Quelaag, so that's probably what put her on this list instead. Plus the lore, though if you ask me both have pretty fitting backstories for a spooky list...
Sure, it is more of a spider out of the three, but as a fight it's worse than Rom the Vacuous Spider. It's among the list of bad DS2 bosses. And lore wise I find Quelaag's plight far more interesting, because she has a proper motivation to fight the player, which the player ends up learning after beating her, making it sort of a nasty guilt-tripping twist.
As pure fights, Armoured Spider and Quelaag are far superior, and I'd say Armoured Spider is probably the best one thanks to its somewhat fast pace. Quelaag's main downfall is how those lava pools can sometimes cause the fight slow down, while Armoured Spider keeps the pacing quite consistent.
I haven't fought the Armored Spider (haven't been able to secure a copy of Demon's Souls), so I can't say much about that.
Now, these lists ultimately come down to personal knowledge and tastes of the maker. I don't know how much Josh actually knows about Quelaag and the general lore of the Soulsbourne series (maybe he chose Freja partly because her story is mostly self-contained, as opposed to having to go into the whole backstory of the First Flame and the witches' downfall to understand what Quelaag is). And, as far as this list is concerned, the "actual spider, not spider motif" rule kind of prioritizes Freja over Quelaag.
Now, I'll admit, I do agree that the Quelaag fight is a lot more fun than Freja; I don't know where he got the idea that so many people like the fight itself.

The Nerscylla is also BRUTAL on how it hunts it's prey. A regular Nerscylla will attack a Gypceros, a Flying Wyvern with rubbery skin and a poison sac, and the Shrouded Nerscylla will hunt a Khezu, another Flying Wyvern with an electric sac. After they kill their prey, they tear off their skin and strap it on their backs. That's where the crystal looking objects on their backs come from.

I think the widowmaker from jak 2 should get an honourable mention, it looks creepy, the scuttle noise it make as it chases you will make your skin crawl, and it's CONSTANTLY lunging foward while shrieking loudly, "shudders" it was only through sheer force of will I managed by get past that part, and when it was over I breathed the biggest sigh of relief

I'll always remember Yakuza from Metroid Fusion, especially since it kicked my ass as a kid. It's a giant spider creature that can breath fire. After you deal enough damage, it's legs get blown off where it then starts to spin jumping in the air using the Space Jump and shoots miniature legs at you as projectiles. Pretty creative attacks I have to say. Let's not forget that awesome boss music.
I'm pissed that I never figured out you could break free from its slam attack. I always thought once you got grabbed, you just had to sit there and take it.
After showing the scary spider thing at the end I felt there should have been a voice clip of Bugs Bunny going ,"Ain't I a stinker?" Come on Josh, you know what you did.

Muffet legit makes me want to beat my severe arachnophobia. Seriously, for the longest time so much as seeing a spider or even typing the word would trigger anxiety attacks in me. But Muffet is just so adorable she made me re-evaluate my greatest fear. Also because I was a dummy and used up my Ruins spider goodies in my first playthrough of Undertale I had to survive three turns (thank god for that awesome music and Sans's hot dogs lol).
