Most important thing in buying stock is entry price and company potential. You never want to overpay, no matter how good the company is and you don't want to hold onto terrible businesses.
1) Look at P/E ratio, Dividend, Dividend Cover, last 10 year price chart, last week price chart
2) Invest in a business you understand, will it have potential in the future
3) Have a margin of safety, so you can leave if you are wrong. This may be buying in at a good price
