SICK ALEX LIFESON GUITAR SOLO! What a BADASS! Also 'Signals' is a MASTERPIECE!
This is Rush in its absolute prime. That entire show just reeks of talent and virtuosity. Every track is played to perfection. From 1980 to 1988 is Rush at its peak performance wise.
Another one of those grossly underated Rush songs. What musicianship! And Neil RIP those lyrics! Who can write this stuff. The guy was simply a genius.

RIP Joe Flaherty, who died earlier this year. He was one of the formidable comedic talents who gave the world the hysterical SCTV TV series back in the 80's. His cast mates included comedy legends Rick Moranis, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Martin Short, and Catherine O'Hara, amongst others.
Rick Moranis went to high school with Alex and Geddy and they were friends with most of the SCTV cast members. In this case, Joe was playing his hilarious character "Count Floyd," who was based on a parody of a popular 1970's TV show for kids in Canada called The Hilarious House of Frankenstein.
Oh, and this concert was my very first live concert. My mates and I had just turned 16 that year, and so were finally able to drive the 60 miles required to see Rush at the old Maple Leaf Gardens in Downtown Toronto.
Backstory to the video: That was Joe Flaherty from Canada's Second City Television (SCTV) which ran in the late 70s/early 80s. It was a comedy troupe with John Candy, Rick Moranis, Catherine O'hara, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, and others. One of Flaherty's characters was Count Floyd who had a television program skit where he presented showing old horror movies. Count Floyd told his viewers to put on their 3D glasses for a program on television, which can't be viewed in 3D. Same was with the film at the Rush Concert. That's the joke. Rush were big fans of SCTV.
Definitely one of the reasons I love Alex so much is his constant evolution throughout his career. If you listen to the first few albums, they are heavy with Zeppelin influence. Alex could shred a pentatonic blues solo, but didn’t want to get pigeonholed as a Page clone. You hear this, ten years on, and he’s using wide open intervals, harmonics, and he’s mastered that whammy bar - those scoops and dives were awesome. The solo starts like a small ember, building and building, until it just bursts into flames, and finally a wonderful melodic hook to ties us back to the chorus.

I was at this show, in Toronto. Epic show, unfortunately I no longer have the 3-D glasses.
I was as well, as a cocky long-haired 17 year old. I was stage right in the reds so I didn’t see the 3D very well. The weed made me think so though. This concert changed my life.
This song and "Countdown" are my two favorite from the Signals album. They both give me chills every time I listen to them!

My favourite Rush song. Considering they started out as Heavy Metal, the fact, they fused the most analogue fat electronic sounds with rock was just amazing. Signals '82, forever.
This tour for Grace under pressure was the second tour I ever saw Rush perform, signals was the first. I got to watch this concert two nights in a row at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago, Illinois when I was about two months shy of turning 17. Good times.🔥👍🤘🏻
Rory.. I really dig the chill vibe of your channel. alex really does add a lot of texture to this song by combining the use of a volume pedal with the vibrato bar. masterful solo. Neil for his part kills it too ..notice the stick toss in between beats where he's using it.

The 3-D thing was a goof, as other comments pointed out. It wasn't serious. It just shows how Rush didn't take themselves seriously despite being the most virtuosic rock band of all time. Signals was their best album and this song might have been the highlight of the album. It's sublime. Great reaction.

One of the few times Neil played to a click - synths at that time only played single notes (no chords), they used an arpeggiator to play the synth parts, so to keep the drums exactly the speed of the synth part, that's why he's wearing headphones.
Must have been hot on stage, most of the time you don't see Alex sweat that much.

I like this as a song but the chorus basically calling god a liar, or questioning because of fear to trust, that he is telling the truth therefore can be trusted, is what I see in this one viewpoint, I could be wrong. but I do understand I called God a liar and worse many times, (anything you say against the son will be forgiven).
