I STRONGLY disagree with your assertion that RUclips had anything to do with it's decline. It came down to one thing, and one thing only: They stopped making cartoons. You seem to gloss over the fact that their most major and long lasting hiatus was almost an ENTIRE DECADE long. It was somewhere from 8-10 YEARS that they barely made anything. That alone sunk the recognition of H*R almost entirely. Even the most die-hard of fans weren't going to wait around for the entire better part of a decade thinking that a new Strong Bad Email would come out next week. And nearly all of them just considered it "done." There was a RARE short cartoon every few years or so, but that wasn't nearly enough. It faded into obscurity because people thought Homestar Runner was over. Simple as that.
For real, they didn't make many over that decade period but they've seriously ramped up production recently. Everyone acting like they disappeared when they just took a break to raise families
A friend introduced me to the website around probably 2002. I remember signing up for the mailing list and never getting a single newsletter, then an announcement was made that they decided to discontinue the newsletter because they were releasing new cartoons "about every other week." It was also stated that The Brothers Chap made plenty of money selling T-shirts, so they were able to quit their regular jobs and work on their website full-time ...until they stopped working on it. My understanding is that they let HomestarRunner.com fall to the wayside because they got hired by Cartoon Network to work on other projects, naturally leaving little free time for personal projects (on top of raising a family). Homestar Runner is technically kicking. Strong Bad has his own Twitter which he actively posts on, and the Homestar Runner gang still uploads the occasional toon!
It's sad but considering how they ran their company it's a) amazing they lasted as long as they did, and b) I feel like the employees are better off somewhere else as it was made clear after they were dissolved they were pretty a much horrible, horrible company to work for. I mean look how it ended with them basically screwing a majority of people out of at least one if not multiple paychecks. And that's not even going into the crunch stuff which sounded close to barbaric at the best of times.
Oh man, this is bringing back memories of other cartoons that floated around the internet. Magical Trevor, Salad Fingers, "My spoon is too big", The Ultimate Showdown Of Ultimate Destiny.....
I love hearing people still talk about this series, even if it’s about how they haven’t uploaded as much. I hope we can get more cartoons and seeing them post at least one cartoon and fan costume segment every Halloween give me a nice glimmer of hope
My wife and I own the Trogdor game, and it is quite hilarious and fun. I’m 35, and Homestar Runner will always be one of the first sites I followed faithfully. Great video!
Another thing that you didn't cover was the discontinuation of the Flash player. It will affect it even more but there are flash preservation projects that are keeping the website up.
The Brothers Chaps could easily bring Homestar back on RUclips or any other platform. They just need the desire to do it. I miss all the boys. (And marzipan)
They kinda have? They started a Strongbad lets play series called disk 4 of 12 with 3 entries so far. Meanwhile they did a Decemberween advent calendar only on their main site that's actually bretty gud.
Two things (1) Your head bounces around like you are a bobblehead in an earthquake (2) By the end of the video you are sweating profusely. I hope you aren't sick. Maybe crank up the AC or something? Anyways, I love your vids. They are informative and entertaining. Thanks!
I remember first time watching Homestar when I was around five years old because of an older family friend showed me, he managed to trick me into believing that he made the whole site
My dad introduced strongbad to me when I was younger and I loved it! And now I always introduce my friends to it and they love it too! It really tells how awesome and funny it is when this gen enjoys it just as much as the previous one did.
TLDR; Mike and Matt have jobs they have to focus on more than anything else, they still update with more videos from time to time, and are pretty active on Strong bad’s twitter account. They’re still around, they just don’t do as much as they once could... they’re also trying to figure out how to animate in HTML5 so they can continue after Flash bites it for good.
Seeing the site's updates on SB Email episodes and the home page gags and themes slow down to a halt was one of the most depressing parts of growing up into the modern internet. And now Flash is dead. RIP Golden Days of the Internet. Thank Trogdor I was there for it.
@@skeetsmcgrew3282 They use ruffle emulator now, but it's definitely a bit harder to get the newer stuff running currently.... and some of the games are currently too broken to play.
What I loved most about Strong Bad was that it was funny enough for me to quote 15 years later but wholesome and simple enough that I could show it to my grandmother and she would laugh just as much as I did. It really was for everyone.
I had nearly forgotten all about home star runner, but seeing, your video brought back all those memories of watching the video and waiting for more uploads.
I still quote hsr I never realized how much of an impact this had on me. Whenever someone says something trying to be cool "that's nothing I can count to purple backwards" is a go to

Oh come on, those are easy to answer: Coach Z is that one duck fellow you came across in the (thankfully) now-defunct furry MMO, Disney's ToonTown Online. Pom Pom is one of the enemies you face at the end of some airship levels in Super Mario 3D Land. You jump on her head 3 times to defeat her. See, these were easy questions! Sorry, I'll leave now...
Honestly, a friend had shown me the series online when I was really young, and I just found it weird and idiotic. What really clicked was the telltale series on the Wii. (Well that, and Guitar Hero featuring Trogdor) I played every episode and absolutely loved it. It's a shame those aren't available anymore.
I grew up in the late 90s early 2000. The internet and Flash animation was truly a special time that along with Ebaumsworld! Waiting for those videos to buffer. Good Times Simple times...
Ahhh, so many memories of high school. Me and a few friends would make Teen Girl Squad references when we were hanging out. I also beat Peasant Quest all by myself, and I hate adventure games! I don't particularly want any new Homestar Runner content because I feel like it's had a good life and it was well loved.
How can you not mention their FIRST full fledged game: "Peasant's Quest" My friends and I LOVED that game. We spent a lot of time playing and finding the secrets and easter eggs. (Nearly Naked Ned anyone??)
I think that it’s great that they faded out before the quality of the cartoons crashed. I would love a resurgence in interest in the old videos but I’m just glad we still get some stuff now and then
This takes me wayy way back. If I remember correctly, they might be giants played the Trogdor song, minus the singing and the name for Honestar runner came from one of their friends saying something silly about baseball. I think the guy said Honestar runner instead of Homerun or something. It's been years! So I may be wrong on some of this.
Sigh, this really shouldn't have been difficult to piece together dude. Site visits started dropping off well before they stepped away in 2009 because the had been reducing the rate at which they were releasing content for several years. They were reducing they rate of content release because they had taken new jobs working as writers and voice actors for TV shows like Sealab 2021 and Gravity Falls. They were so successful by late 2007 that they no longer had time to release regular content updates like a weekly Strongbad email and switched to mainly doing holiday specials. In 2009 they were so busy they could no longer even commit to delivering holiday specials, and as you mentioned Flash was something of a dying platform. As for their lack of popularity on RUclips, the point of their content was that it was interactive and filled with hidden Easter eggs. In 2005-2007 RUclips was still quite small and just didn't matter enough by the time the brothers Chap had started working on more serious projects. That is the story of what happened to HomeStarRunner.com.
HR, Collegehumor, and ebaumsworld...daily content to binge before Netflix and Hulu made it “cool,” and it was a great time for the internet back in the day!!!
Dude this website was my childhood I could never forget it. Haven’t been on it since I was six but I kinda want to check it out again. I used to love the interactive cartoon where everyone came to your house to trick or treat and you got to choose what candy they got.
Homestar Runner was popular in my 5th grade class, and it's one of my many inspirations for doodling comics. The influence Homestar Runner has on our pop culture in undeniable. Long live the Brothers Strong!
I had the techno song from the Strong Bad E-mail series in my head last night. I decided to show that cartoon to my kids (8 & 10) and they loved it. Those were the days. Homestar Runner and Liquid Generation were my jams.
I always liked teen girl squad too. My favorite strong bad email was "crazy cartoon" but I remember first seing them my senior year of highschool. "It's time to jump!!!" 😂😂😂
The Brothers Chaps' business model was always based solely on merch because they had this very DUI punk attitude about keeping ads and anything distracting off of their website. That model only had a certain lifespan and they probably knew it, as they started doing other projects after their website was past its peak. Now that Flash is abandoned and most browsers disable it, their website is less accessible than ever. I think in today's world if they were trying to make it I imagine Patreon would be the place to start. It's a real shame because part of the appeal of Homestar Runner was the interactivity and creative use of multimedia on their site. There was the games and there was the fact that if you clicked stuff on the screen the toon would play out differently. Then again, pausing a video is a modern luxury we take for granted.

Each cartoon was its own page; no recommended videos or ads. In fact, there were no ads at all -- it was monetized only by selling merch on the Store page. As for the reuploads, well, the cartoons just fundamentally weren't made _for_ youtube. They're not the right length to entice the algorithm, or related to trending keywords. They also have no way to replicate the much-adored clickable easter eggs, or any of the games at all. The qualities that boosted sharing through word-of-mouth now drag down sharing through a recommendation-based platform limited to just audio/video. The way they made a new BTTF trilogy but it's a game was pretty impressive to me.
Does anyone remember when the Homestar Runnef crew worked on the two more eggs shorts on Disney XD ?
Oh that's cool I didn't know they did that, those were pretty interesting to watch
Nathaniel Foga wait they did
Junge of the gorgle
So that's why the movements are similar, I didn't know that tho.
Here lies our only reader
Fun fact: The guy who sent in the "Trevor the Vampire" SB Email was sent by an old friend of mine, Trevor Geaghan who played bass for a band named "The Killing Moon"
Proof?
Proof mate?
I had a friend who’s email was answered in the samples when you cursed over the sb email icon. Can’t remember what it said tho lol

"It's dot com!"
"I'm Homestar Runner, and this is a website!"
Favorite was when homestar would take over strong bad emails.
“Never ending sooooodaaaaa, ohhhhhhhhhohhhhhhhhohhhhhh”
You calling The Brothers Chaps "The Chapman Brothers" sounds so wrong!
Say what you will about the Brothers Chaps, at least none of *their* content ended with Strong Bad hawking manscaping products.
That's because they don't need to? Because they reached success before sponsors were the norm?
Did you not watch the "suntan" sbemail?
Strongbad's emails were hilarious. My favorite one was when Strongbad was describing the weirdest dream he ever had.
I really was not ready to see the US in underwhere
"Ey Steve!!!"
Homestar Runner is technically kicking. Strong Bad has his own Twitter which he actively posts on, and the Homestar Runner gang still uploads the occasional toon!
Not anymore. Now that the non essential business ban and blm are in effect, you're not going to be seeing this racist trash much longer.
I remember strong bad WAYYY more than I remember Home Star Runner. Probably because of his iconic and recognizable design.
Also because he pretty much became the main character.
oh strong bad stole the spotlight most of the time, definitely, but i think the designs of the rest of the cast were just as iconic and recognizable
4:46 Man, that hits hard.
I don't know if you're talking about how Strong Bad hit The Cheat or how you're feeling.
@@guillermoconcetti The fact that Telltale is now defunct.
I've recently begun showing my daughters some of my favorite Strong Bad Emails, and they LOVE Teen Girl Squad!
This is the funniest thing. Just about a week or two ago I started to get into homestar runner. Just kind of surreal, that's all
Oh man, this is bringing back memories of other cartoons that floated around the internet. Magical Trevor, Salad Fingers, "My spoon is too big", The Ultimate Showdown Of Ultimate Destiny.....
Last time I was this early, home star runner was still a thing!
Time to break open that glow stick and pour it into some mountain dew.
It still is
It’s still a thing.

Make sure you all fund my kickstarter, and together we can put an end to April fool's day.
I love hearing people still talk about this series, even if it’s about how they haven’t uploaded as much. I hope we can get more cartoons and seeing them post at least one cartoon and fan costume segment every Halloween give me a nice glimmer of hope
I’ve never seen anything about Homestar Runner but I’ve heard the name before
Guess that speaks about how popular it was
For me it was the opposite characters like hr and strong bad were characters I recognized by had no idea where they were from
My wife and I own the Trogdor game, and it is quite hilarious and fun. I’m 35, and Homestar Runner will always be one of the first sites I followed faithfully. Great video!
Another thing that you didn't cover was the discontinuation of the Flash player. It will affect it even more but there are flash preservation projects that are keeping the website up.
"THE UGLY OOOOOOOONE"
A shame he missed TGS. By far the greatest achievement of their channel
So, are we getting ready to look so good? If we are ready, then let's start looking good!
Arrow'd!!
I met a possum.
8:55, out of pure Pavlovian reflex, I mouse over the video to see if the cursor changes on any of the characters.
You just have been confused for awhile
My dad introduced strongbad to me when I was younger and I loved it! And now I always introduce my friends to it and they love it too! It really tells how awesome and funny it is when this gen enjoys it just as much as the previous one did.
The last time ive heard of homestar runner was a reference in the magician's when elliot says, "you gave our only way to fillory to fucking trogdor?"
Thank you so much for doing this video! Homestar will always be an icon for me!
My dad loved the sbemails way back when. He still sometimes starts quoting coach z with the bad accent.
Every now and then I get a song or skit from the series playing in my head and then I remember the memories and I just :””)
Thank Trogdor I was there for it.
there was a long hiatus that ended, thankfully.
they are still kicking with new shorts periodically. i check their site on certain holidays
I don't think they can upload to their website anymore. Since Flash isn't supported anymore. They are still adding old videos to their RUclips channel
No they have their new Halloween shorts on the website
@@skeetsmcgrew3282 They use ruffle emulator now, but it's definitely a bit harder to get the newer stuff running currently.... and some of the games are currently too broken to play.
What I loved most about Strong Bad was that it was funny enough for me to quote 15 years later but wholesome and simple enough that I could show it to my grandmother and she would laugh just as much as I did. It really was for everyone.
OT: I like your hoodie.
It’s a Teddy Fresh design for those who don’t know
I had nearly forgotten all about home star runner, but seeing, your video brought back all those memories of watching the video and waiting for more uploads.
I still quote hsr I never realized how much of an impact this had on me. Whenever someone says something trying to be cool "that's nothing I can count to purple backwards" is a go to
This and stick figure flash games and movies were my childhood. Great stuff. Having your own computer at that age back then was super super hype.

AaaAAAAaaaaAAAAA I was raised by a cup of coffee.
Every year I still sing the Teen Girl Squad’s “Valentimes Cheer”:
What time is it? It’s Valentimes!
What we gonna get? Several boys!
How we gonna get ‘em?
Umm...
Mock UN Medals? Unflattering clothing?? Voodoo??? Is it voodoo???? VOODOO!!
Oh come on, those are easy to answer:
Coach Z is that one duck fellow you came across in the (thankfully) now-defunct furry MMO, Disney's ToonTown Online.
I'm pretty sure it got a physical release. (Not sure if it was the Wii version though)
Well yeah it is weird and idiotic
the telltale series is on steam
That's why it rocked....it was dumb cute funny 😁
4:48 the *Now Defunct* Telltale.
Ow :(
I grew up in the late 90s early 2000.
How can you not mention their FIRST full fledged game: "Peasant's Quest"
My friends and I LOVED that game. We spent a lot of time playing and finding the secrets and easter eggs.
(Nearly Naked Ned anyone??)
I still say haldo when I type a greeting, before realizing it will make sense to no one
throw baby
Did they make that game? And I was about to play it. Based.
@@v.emiltheii-nd.8094 yeah they made it a long time ago. I think somewhere between 2001 and 2003. It was genuinely a LOT of fun
I loved Strong Bad's emails. Sadly my memory has faded but the one he did about the rave will always live in my head.
I was literally watching Strong Bad emails a few days ago lol
They uploaded those Cheat Commandos videos on RUclips, probably why this video was in my recommended
Just wanted to show love for the Homestarruner content. Thank you sir.
That is the story of what happened to HomeStarRunner.com.
tikiman163 agreed, this was clearly written by someone that didn’t experience it.
This silly little animation inspired a generation of future animators.
The Cat Eye's are freaking me out.

Dude this website was my childhood I could never forget it. Haven’t been on it since I was six but I kinda want to check it out again. I used to love the interactive cartoon where everyone came to your house to trick or treat and you got to choose what candy they got.
"half a decade" just say 5 years bro
just like "half a dozens" isn't a standing term cause it's just 6
Homestar Runner was popular in my 5th grade class, and it's one of my many inspirations for doodling comics.
Strong bad is my #1 most quoted character
I always liked teen girl squad too. My favorite strong bad email was "crazy cartoon" but I remember first seing them my senior year of highschool. "It's time to jump!!!" 😂😂😂
I still look forward to their occasional uploads. Last year’s fan Halloween costumes was comedy gold as usual.
I don't know why but the "people from all walks of life" made me lmao....
I will forever talk like Strongbad when I'm being sarcastic.
