Here is Odile's Black Swan Pas de Deux from the ballet Swan Lake. Once again, I take you through with commentary and give you technique and performance tips, ballerina insights, and (hopefully) some humor! My partner is PNB principal Seth Orza. Here come the fouettes!

I am soloist with Miami City Ballet a former soloist with the New York City Ballet. When I was a young student, I was always looking for insights into the ballet world and how to improve my dancing as well as beauty and lifestyle tips. Now that I am a professional, it is my turn to share.
On my channel I make ballet, beauty, and lifestyle videos for everyone of all ages. My goal is help dancers improve and achieve their dreams as well as open up the ballet world to non dancers. I have been sick for 4 years, (muscle disease and dysautonomia)I danced all through high school struggling immensely throughout my junior and senior year. After my last season ended and my disease progressed I stopped doing pretty much everything. After watching you dance with your disease I started taking some dance classes at my city's rec center. I just want to thank you for giving my the courage to dance again. You're an inspiration

@@gpopov777 It's a snarky reminder to the Prince that duh, Odile (black swan) wears a black tutu, whereas Odette (white swan) = white tutu. He's so enamored by Odile that he thinks she's Odette even though the swans are conveniently color-coded for easy identification! And that's a guy for you. ;)

Kathryn's upper body is so smooth and expressive you'd hardly believe she was a NYCB dancer... I much prefer the Russian version for Odile's solo, the music is so sinister and... 'Odilish'?

Loved this video and I actually prefer the Russian version of Black Swan - it's the first one I knew, before the "American" one. Your dancing is beautiful and I admire you so much for going out there and just dealing with what you had and making such a gorgeous performance out of it. Your artistry and musicality are magnificent, sick day or not.
Mimi Rambles I grew up with this version. But actually this music was never used by Petipa in the original production, but the "American" one.

Oh really! I didn't know that. It's funny how even classical ballets can vary so much in terms of the music that is used. La Bayadère has four acts in some versions and only three in others. So interesting.
Yes! I knew Russian first, but I look better doing the other one, so I prefer that one for myself!

Even if it wasn't your best dancing, you did your best, and absolutely owned it. Besides, if I see someone dancing even 1% better than me, I'm just like "this is perfect I can't even why can't I dance this good"
Also, this is also a big inspiration to me. Just seeing someone who had a big illness and had disenigrating muscles and all of that stuff, but still pulling off a very hard variation is just fantastic. Great job :)
This is my preferred Black Swan variation; the music is so beautiful (and I also learned it off of RUclips! XD). Yay! You nailed it!

You really become the character! Your 'not best dancing' is so pretty and eye flattering so it makes me wonder what is your best dancing like. I loooove your russian/european variation. To be honest I prefer it over all others. I'm curious which dancers did you look at on youtube to prepare for it? Also a question for Odille's mimicing Odette - in order to become the character I have heard two versions of mental preparation, so to speak - one is you mimic the white swan to fool the Prince and the other is you are mocking her. Which one do you think is better? Oh, and Seth's a la seconde's are amazing!
I appreciate you being honest about the mistakes or the improvements you could have done. Humbleness is such a gold virtue in the world of dance. Bravo!
I like how you talked about the emotion of Odile - it's definitely being lost by many dancers particularly in guesting performances where its just the pdd. Your emotion and presentation of Odile is absolutely stunning. And as you say often, its better to keep technique clean and crisp than going overboard with tricky things and that definitely shows here. Loved it.

I know you were sick when you danced to this but you did an amazing job! Yes I saw some of the issues you were saying before you mention them in the video but if the thyroid issues were taking issue like that and you were still able to get through swan lake and as the black swan you are a trooper!

I got lured in to a lot of black swan pieces this morning down the youtube rabbit hole, and I can appreciate so many types of dancer and interpretations. I know hypothyroidism can lead to lack of muscle tone as you mentioned, but I think your softer phase here works wonders for your beauty and femininity, something I can't say about some of the principals I've been watching. You look graceful, fluid, royal, effortless and alluring!

Just wanted to let you know that I'm addicted to your videos. I danced when I was younger, but gave it up, because, to be honest, I just wasn't all that good, but I still adore watching it.

In the first video of this series she said she had been sick for a while at the time. It was not at the beginning of the illness, she was already strugling a lot.

That variation has always been the one I preferred. The music seems so sinister and evil compared to the other one which I think fits Odile's character much better. Definite plus for it being way easier to dance 😂

I like how the choreography had just the right amount of Rothbart in the Pas de Deux,, some companies have him included in the ENTIRE dance and it’s kinda annoying because it takes away from Odile’s sassiness 😂

How you're feeling "yay, it's done" just as Odile is feeling "success, I have captured his heart" is great. Re fouettés - I actually, one day, really really want to see a black swan with 32 perfectly performed, identical single fouettés. I think that the doubles and triples sort of mess it up. It's meant to be sorcery and magic and enchantment, and a repetitive movement feels like a repetitive, hynoptic chant that I think would work perfectly with the story and the music and so on. If only a choreographer would agree with me...! Loved the single fouettés is what I'm saying. A+ piqué málange as well. Anyway this was super interesting, thank you for sharing. :)

This isn't the "Russian" variation, it's the Bolshoi variation and the choreography isn't even the same. The Mariinsky, Mikhailovsky, Stanislavsky, and Kremlin all do the other version. The only European company that uses this music is La Scala and their variation is different choreography.

I love these videos. We are all so self critical!! When I was dancing and saw a video of myself I would just cringe. I thought I looked like a baby elephant, but not as cute!! Even picture's my mother loves to show off, I can't help hating every single one.
Kathryn, I am in my second year( 12 years old) of dance at a studio in my small town in Alabama. We have to do Jazz,Tap,Contemporary,and Lyrical I know I will be so tired but I am ready. I hope to go on pointe I know my teacher personally but we wont be going over ballet and with yours and her help I will be able to do it I really want to be a professional Dancer I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos.

Also today I had dress rehearsal for my recital and I have a solo in my first pointe performance and I rolled off of an arabesque and sprained my ankle. I can still dance tomorrow but I was wondering; could you make a video about what to do if you fall during a performance or if you get an injury right before?

In my view, Odile has to show nuances of wickedness, not utter wickedness (which is sometimes expected from audiences), because, as you say, she has to credibly lure in and fool the prince.
