Sea grass is even more effective at sequestering climate threatening carbon than the rain forests so both the earth and the manatees thank you. Keep up the good work.

Really a beautiful story about these manatees and regrowing their habitat-the Sea Grass. Also, if the boaters in the canals heading out to sea or just putting around would simply slow down in these shallow waters -- where the manatees are-that caution alone will help Save the Manatees. I Love them💖. These are Gentle, Peaceful Sweet creatures that never hurt a Soul. Hoping they keep coming back and their population continues to grow. 💖

My folks live just a few hundred yards from the Indian River. Just a short bike ride away is the lagoon where i go every year to watch the manatee. One year i was able to swim with them when we were out kayaking. It was an amazing experience and these animals are incredibly sweet and gentle. It breaks my heart that their resources are in danger.

Now the real question is how to get the boaters on the Treasure Coast to slow down in order to help ensure manatee safety. I grew up seeing the slow speed/no wake signs even back in the 90s, and yet I'm not surprised to hear that there are still problems on the east coast of the state that stem from malevolent behavior. I worry that those who try to pursue boater education on this front will end up triggering the backfire effect, especially in younger boaters on the Treasure Coast.

Serious idea for a story is the half cent tax we voted into law years ago in Brevard County - specifically to clean up the Indian river lagoon. The sea grass has died from pollution and manatees are literally starving to death, dolphins with herpes etc. What are they doing with the funds raised from that tax? Every time we get a heavy rain event the sewage treatment plants dump MILLIONS of gallons of untreated sewage directly into the Indian river lagoon. Hmmm don't you think they've raised more than enough to modernize those facilities.

Cherry picking story, alas. Overall in Florida, the manatee is in steep decline, almost wiped out in the Lake Worth lagoon, and the Indian River lagoon is not far behind. The lack of control over septic systems, added to the Big Sugar issue, and unchecked urban growth, is doing a number on every Florida waterway, and every creature in, or on it.
