mic looks like akg c414. you can check his guitar effects in equipboard.com (seems like the chorus is a boss ce-3). tape machine is akai mg614, but not really sure tbh. and yes! michael jackson vibes for sure :p
Rough drafts always get pushed through a DAW eventually. It's how much is added in post that pulls it further and further away from a true live* performance.
he said in an interview "I just had a little bit of equipment, and I had to be quiet in the hotel without annoying people too much. I mostly recorded on my own but had my drummer come for a little bit and had some Japanese people coming and hanging out. It was just really simple and funny, lots of fun. Then you go outside and it’s Tokyo."
A lot of it is DI’d. I had a bass guitar and electric guitar, then just made the drums quiet with a duvet. It’s lucky everyone’s really polite in Japan and even if they were upset with the noise, they probably wouldn’t have said!
