New JDAM ER Smart Bombs Are Now Operational In Ukraine

  • So what makes JDAM and JDAM-ER different? Well, depending on the altitude of its release, JDAM can reach targets up to a distance of 15 miles, while the JDAM-ER extends this range with the wing kit. Upon released, the bomb's wings of JDAM-ER unfold, enabling it to glide for up to 45 miles, which is three times the range of the original weapon. Boeing, the manufacturer of the weapon, claims that both the JDAM and JDAM-ER kits can convert ordinary bombs into precision-guided "smart" munitions that can perform effectively in harsh weather. These kits offer a cost-effective method of transforming unguided bombs into "fire and forget" weapons weighing 498 pounds, with the JDAM-ER kit having the additional capability of tripling the range of the original bomb.

      Explosions are strange things, sometimes people do survive when they are close. It might save them from a fuse or flare detonating, a spanner being dropped from the wing or a bomb going off in the next bay. I is probably just standard doctrine so they get used to wearing it so they can operate comfortably in a war zone with snipers and artillery.

    “We used JDAM bombs,” Yuriy Ignat, spokesman for the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, told Ukrainian television and added, “These are Western-style bombs with which our air force successfully strikes important targets. These bombs are slightly less powerful but extremely accurate. I would like to have more such bombs for success at the front.” There is no clear explanation for why Ignat found them less powerful. His words may suggest that the weapons supplied to Ukraine are not 2,000-pound bombs, maybe 1000 or 500-pound bombs.

  • @SkyRiver1
    @SkyRiver1 Год назад +8

    This doesn't matter as much as you would lead people to believe because: The main issue is Russian jamming tech and how it will ultimately be dealt with.
    Russian Electronic Warfare has been partially successful against the GPS phase of the guidance of inexpensive smart munitions, such as Excalibur guided artillery shells, and bombs modified with smart guidance kits, and to a lesser extent mobile missiles. If this Russian capacity is overcome by Ukraine it will be a much more dangerous place for Russian armor and artillery.
    So at present this is the arena that could alter the balance the most. US capabilities are at present inferior to those of Russia (because the US would use aircraft to destroy Russian jamming assets) so Ukraine may have to look elsewhere or to itself for help in this critical area. But it is just in this area of inferiority that the most advantage will be gained with any improvement.
    The other issue is really a police issue, that being the continual supply on the black market of western tech to the Russians. Usually through strawman purchases then brought in through Russia friendly neighbor countries. This criminal activity is degrading the effectiveness of the current sanctions. Sanctions that if they were working could be devastating in the long short term.
    It is often sited that Russia has a long term game, and that time is on its side. But this is simply not the case. Russia must accomplish it's aims in the short term, which may seem like a long term to Americans, but in historic terms, in the terms of geopolitical demographics, it's now or never for mama Russia.
    Addendum: Since the Ukrainian air force does not have air superiority it has been dropping it's smart bombs from an altitude that is too low for the inertial guidance system to have the time it needs to direct the bombs when the GPS is jammed.

      I read that too. Could we imagine that only classical JDAM-ER have been sent to Ukraine ? Some years ago USA noticed that their GPS based devices were very vulnerable to jamming or poofing (russian). So they developed a new generation of GPS, GPS 3, restricted to military use, which is, I suppose, more resistant to jamming. But of courset to avoid Russians to investigate on a non explosed JDAM they keep these GPS3 JDAM for more critical conflict (Chines for example).
