Great comparison. I think the SM57 problem (when it is a problem) is demonstrated really well here and maybe best described as just a slow capsule response 🤷‍♂ The WA-19 sounds more present regardless of EQ since it's letting transients come through better... I would say... and I bought a Beta 57 right before these came out basically for that reason 😄😜 Anyway, thanks for posting!

Every mic test should be done like this. You can hear the differences night and day when an entire track is recorded with each mic. I was excited about the WA-19 but I think I'll stick to my Unidyne III after this.

I can see why they’re called “warm audio” lol, it’s so glowy but still clear! I’d love to hear how it sounds against the d190, can’t wait, love your videos! ❤

The wa-19 is reminding me of an Electro-Voice re-15

The WA-19 sounds more open, SM57 is more focused and aggressive probably because of its midrange. Both have their place of course, but I really liked the WA-19 sound. Thanks for the demo.

dope video, thanks for making it!! I have a vintage D19 and I love it. I think I'll get the warm audio to preserve the state of the grandmother xD

It was hard to tell the difference on individual tracks, but when you A.B'd the entirety of the mix, it was clear to me that the WA-19 was much brighter in a good way. The SM57 just sounded muddy in comparison.

Awesome comparison ❤ the amount of mids on that 19 are insane. I feel like i would be eqing heaps of mids out all the time. I prefer the 57. It sounds more like a record.

In my pov nothing beats the SM57 specially for the price, it's not a fail comparison tho every mic has its own personality, it would be more interesting to see it pair to pair with the original

Hi ! Thanks for this review that was very interesting. But let me doubt about the EQ match at the end and I will explain why. The problem with EQ matching 2 mic is phase issue that you can't get right because first, the 2 mics will never be at the exact same position so they will never have the exact same frequency content at the same exact time and second, both microphones already have a different phase shift because of their capsule design. Don't get me wrong, this is one of the best way to test mics and you did seriously great on this video. This is not causing any problem when you listening to both back to back but it is way harder for the EQ to match it beaucse of phase issue (That's why the EQ curve you've got looks all over the palce). You are right when you said the WA-19 sounded more bright but if you look at the frequency response the major differences are in the 2 to 5K area and after 10K (this is more in the high mid area). What I heard at first is literaly a big high mid bump in the 2K area wihch makes sens because it this a commun things on vintage mics. I think that in this case it's much more practical to EQ match by ear and loocking at both frequency response so I will give you 3 bands EQ settings that sound very very close to me: LS 2db@50hz + Bell 5.5db@940hz@0.68Q + Bell 3.2db@2500hz@1Q. With just this EQ It sounds pretty close to the WA-19 to me and I would like to know if you agree. Thank you for your video and have a nice day :)

Thanks for this. Literally the exact video I needed. Wa-19 bit less natural but with some SHINYSUGARMAGIC. I really don’t know what to get. After a dynamic with something different, this or a heil pr40 I think

Great demo! Love the vintage vs modern workhorse shoot out. There is definitely a woody tape like raspiness with the WA-19. It almost makes the 57 sound like it’s pre eq’d. I’ve got a pair of WA-19’s on the way so looking forward to finding unique uses for them.

The difference was most evident on the acoustic tracks. The others not so much. And obviously you heard it on the full mix as the acoustics a main part. Nice compare -- cool tune.

Im happy to have heard a comparison, but there’s no clear winner for me. Sometimes I prefer the 57, sometimes I prefer the wa-19. The 19 lacks some warmth, does have some more detail and response but not necessarily what I’d always want. If I wanted a modern sound I’d probably want the wa19. Sometimes bringing out fine details in all sources makes them fight for focus. I might want less detail in some sources, more in others. If I learned anything it would be that it’s a good combination to mix and match depending on the source. I’d try the wa19 on one or two things I’d want to feature the most. Often that’s the vocals but not always. Maybe the bass really gives it the vibe and I want to hear those higher harmonics cut a little deeper, and wash out/bury the vocals for a more psychedelic vibe. It sounds like a cool pair to use for a recording. I wonder how the wa19 compares to the mojave ma-d.

the sm57 sounds more focus a a lot more consistent than the warm that sounds with mor hi-end but soft with no puch, kind of a empty sound, really different than the real AKG D19,
