  • Ashton Kutcher breaks his silence on Danny Masterson's rape allegations. The actor opens up to 'Esquire,' explaining that he wants his former 'That '70s Show' co-star 'to be found innocent of the charges brought against him.' Kutcher also notes, 'I wholesale feel for anybody who feels like they were violated in any way.' Masterson, who pleaded not guilty, currently awaits a new trial for sexual assault charges, after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict and a mistrial was declared in December.

It’s so important to remember that someone can be a wonderful friend and person to you but a terrible person to someone else. I imagine as someone who loved him it’s unimaginable to picture the trauma and hurt he caused someone else. You can love someone and hate what they did. Support them through their struggle but not support their actions. It’s a complicated situation to be in.

It's heart breaking when a good friend you've known for many years turns out to have done these kinds of things. This happened to me, I lost a good friend when I found out he was abusing his girlfriend. She came to stay with me after he hit her. I tried to get her to leave him but he convinced her to stay. After that she went to the hospital when he hit her face so hard that blood was coming out her ear. About 6 months after that they invited me to their wedding. I was vocally clear that I did not support the marriage and was not interested in ever speaking to him again. He texted me many times trying to explain that it wasn't all just him, she was as bad as he was, etc. And I just ignored him totally. And if anyone asks me about him, I tell them the truth. If memory serves, At the time of the assault they were both in Scientology which is a cult. The accuser has since left. The reason why she didn’t file charges until now was because when the assault initially happened she went to the church of Scientology which is what all members are instructed to do. They are indoctrinated not to involve outside authorities. They immediately covered it up and threatened her. That’s why this is only coming out now. Because Scientology was actively involved in the cover-up. because public opinion on the network or studios would be thrown in the bin if they kept said actor/actress employed/working during these kind of scandals. firing the employee and leaving a cut-paste PR response about the ordeal is just the safest thing for them to do to save face. for example: johnny depp and disney. pirates of the carribean is loved by younger audiences primarily cuz of jack sparrow ofc. allegations arise, suddenly parents everywhere, before even knowing if he's guilty or innocent, want him gone because they dont want their children idolizing that monster.
^ this is how hollywood/large entertainment corporations work. guilty until proven innocent. and more often than not, after a scandal/allegation like this, even if you ARE proven completely innocent, there is no apology from them to the accused. theyre considered a flight risk most times, and their career, and livelihood? blacklisted. over. maybe theyll get a TV deal in more minor roles, but any major acting parts are usually not gonna happen. and its horrible. i fully embrace that victims need a voice. but that includes the accused who have had their lives torn apart and ruined by accusations. and in this instance, no matter what happens, i hope that justice is served. no matter the outcome.

From a showrunners' standpoint, it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario. If they kept Masterson employed, they could be seen as sweeping the problem under the rug and keeping a predator on their show (similar to what the BBC did with Jimmy Savile). And since they chose to fire Masterson and write his character out, some people are seeing this as letting 3 accusers "ruin his life without proof." If I were ever in that position, I'd rather deal with fans getting mad at me for firing someone than deal with a PR crisis for sweeping the problem under the rug. Innocent until proven guilty only applies to the court of law. It doesn't apply to employment. They could possibly hire him back if he's found innocent, but only time will tell.
If Masterson is found innocent, then he should file a countersuit against his accusers, but if he's found guilty, then he can suffer the consequences of his actions. Given that he allegedly made any potential girlfriends sign a contract with him to only go through the Church of Scientology with any accusations (or something like that), before they even started dating him isn't exactly a good look for Masterson, in this case.
The problem is that too many people, majority women, often wait to come forward with allegations like this (and sometimes, not at all) for reasons such as them being afraid to come forward, feeling ashamed of themselves for what happened to them, etc.
At the end of the day, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Is this the first heavy sentence ever given to an actor / Scientology member who raped without killing? If it is, historians should take note. I am relieved that justice finally has been done after a lot of people thought Scientology and a constantly repeated half-hour sitcom guaranteed a slap on the wrist. Possibly the appeal of the sitcom that includes Mr. Masterson has lost its sense of humor and its entire appeal. If it has, that is good. The real 1970s were bad enough. A stupid half-hour sitcom views the Me Decade through rose-colored glasses, and that makes memories of the decade even more painful for those who are forced to watch reruns in doctors’ office waiting rooms and other tension-filled public places. Mr. Masterson’s two victims have helped expose the sitcom for what it is : tasteless humor based on false generalizations. According to the writers, in the 1970s every young white person did this and did that. Oh, and does anyone ever point out that throughout the real 1970s, the number of reported rapes skyrocketed? Which character on the tasteless sitcom, if any, mentions even one time that a female must learn how to defend herself against a potential rapist?

@@melaniemitchell9419 How was it important to get rid of him? Are accusations from bitter exes now evidence? Shouldn't he be punished only after proven guilty of actually having done something wrong? Such an odd mindset to have where anyone can just say anything, and then we have to assume that they are telling the truth before anything at all is presented as evidence. It is equally as insane as saying that if you accuse anyone you also have to get barred from being able to work until you get the guilty verdict. Innocent until proven guilty is not just something we keep around because "it has always been that way." It is around because that is the only thing that makes sense. Maybe he did it, maybe he did not. We don't know. So let him work until he is actually proven guilty. Seems like a very easy way to just ruin a mans life to simply accuse him. It's incredibly hard to prove someone is guilty of something like rape or sexual assault, especially without evidence. What many people don't seem to understand about trials is that they aren't to prove whether or not the defendant did what they're being accused of. They're about if the prosecution can meet their burden of proof to convict. And every state has different standards of that burden of proof that has to be met. Some state's standards are higher than others. And so often does the public tend to side with the accuser that the defendant is often painted as guilty even before the trial begins. There are only two people in these cases that know the truth. The accuser and the accused. And one of them is lying. The trick is trying to figure out which one.

No he really didnt.. he tried to clear himself from association and skirted any damning speculation. I imagine they are programmed that way in scientology since the victims couldnt even use or say the word rape when filing complaints with police. If you were raised in it, a creep would see this as a soft spot in the system and look to exploit it.. Dont ya think? So, I cant help but wonder how long it went on.. and how many countless victims he would have ran through until he finally found someone that stood up. Knowing it was more likely to be them that would be punished and sent away to scientology reform school..aka scientology jail, than any celebrity status members. A sexual predator would want silent victims that couldnt fight back or file complaints so if found guilty, he will be yet another example of the absolute worst kind of predator looking to take advantage of an entire gender with that belief system. Knowing they wont even be able to file a complaint and if they do it would most likely end there. Since everyone knows Scientology covets and recruits celebrities over its regular members. So the higher ups will always choose to protect the celebs first, because they are of a higher importance to the cult than their regular members. They are used for Public Relations and to aid in recruitment. And therefore held to a much lower standard of conduct respectively and sheilded from any ground level accusations. Just like the real world only worse.
