Quick note! Though, I try to include as many depictions as possible, not everything makes the cut for one reason or another. I will likely start to include a sort of ‘honorable mentions’ section. That way, even more depictions can be included, and I bypass some reasons I have to cut out certain interpretations.
One that honestly i don't even know you knew about is Skyrim's smilodons And i say that in plural because there's a normal version and a snow version I think they're called sabre-cats in the game but they pretty much are identical to smilodons Edit: Oh yeah, there's also the Vale sabre-cat from The dawnguard DLC
I have one just in case: In the Lilo and Stitch series, an experiment has the ability to turn modern animals into prehistoric ones. It turns an elephant into a mammoth, a squirrel into a saber-tooth squirrel, and a tiger into a Smilodon. It also turns some other animal into a T-Rex (never revealed what they used).
I must say, in regards to the plain/stripes/spots issue, I think I heard somewhere that due to their primarily grassland environment, spots or plain seems to be considered be more likely/advantageous for Smilodon, since stripes are more beneficial in forests to help break up your silhouette under a canopy this missed interpretation is probably more obscure (and might not technically count), so I'm not surprised it didn't show up here, but in the american anime series RWBY (pronounced ruby), there are creatures called Grimm, basically monsters that are mostly based on fairy-tale or mythical creatures, but introduced in volume 7 were Grimm based on prehistoric creatures, one of them was called Sabyr (pronounced sabre), clearly inspired by Smilodon (but not Smilodon itself), as well as Megoliath (Woolly Mammoth), Centinal (Arthropleura), and Teryx (a kind of large Dromaeosaur with Pterosaur wings) p.s. you say Smilodon was ruined for you by Journey to 10'000 BC and Primeval, for me (in a different way) it was the documentary Prehistoric Predators, that first showed me that Terror Birds (one of my favourite non-Mesozoic groups of animals) weren't just punching bags for Smilodon like the hyenas (one of my favourite modern animals) in the Lion King, that they could actually fight back and probably come out on top in most encounters (when they coexisted that is), so when that specific scene happened in the first episode in Life on our Planet, as well as the implication that they were superior and had a large part in the Terror Bird extinction, that kind of tainted my first impression of the show, and my expectations of it going forward
Honorable Mentions: this is more recent but Power Rangers Dino Fury had a Green Sabertooth Tiger Zord Edit: I think there's also a season (Power Rangers Megaforce) where the Yellow Ranger's Zord is a Sabertooth Tiger bulldozer
For such an iconic prehistoric creature, I’m surprised Smilodon isn’t featured more often. My personal favorite depiction of the sabertooth is the iconic Walking With Beasts design. While aspects of their lifestyle might not line up with what we now know about them, I still think it’s hands down the best Smilodon yet put to screen.
As much as I love Primeval their designs can be a bit hit or miss (especially in the later seasons) but I think their Smilodon is one of their best. I love the colors and patterning.
Since Smilodon fossils are found in Central and South America, there seems to be a head canon where a majority of Smilodon in media are similar to Jaguar or Cougar in appearance
In ZT2: Extinct Animals, the Smilodon has a brown-spotted coat with a white underbelly similar to Prehistoric Kingdom's version, but - If you're lucky enough - you'll get a Leucistic or Melanistic version, when adopting Smilodon. In ZT1: Complete Collection, it has a brown coat and white underbelly. Overall, both designs of the animal in these games are pretty good. 😁
this is why i came to the comments lol im only about 3/4 of the way through the video and i was wondering if skyrim would show up but heres my answer. skyrim sabretooth cat should definitely make the honorable mentions cut
Funny enough, in the Lilo and stitch series, they had a smilodon. There’s also the beasts of the Mesozoic line since they’re making a smilodon as well if you count those
Diego will always be favorite deception of Smilodon and that's cool, overall yet again this video was pretty great and I really hope you have a great day.
Very detailed compilation of Smilodon. It is such a popular creature that it's hard to include every single interpretation, but there are a couple not mentioned that can be considered honorable mentions. If you haven't seen them, you should. Smilodon was in Animal Planet's Giant Monsters with Jeff Corwin. Its animation model was identical to its cousin Megantereon from Before We Ruled the Earth; the only difference was the Smilodon had cougar-style fur while Megantereon had spots and stripes. Both looked really nice, though. There was also a pink Smilodon in an episode of the TV series Pink Panther and Sons. As a side note, it's worth mentioning that Diego's muscular pack member named Lenny is, according to tie-in material, really a scimitar cat (Homotherium). If we ever see a compilation of that particular cat, Lenny could make the list!
One thing almost all depictions of Smilodon ignore is that Smilodon wasn’t actually well-adapted for genuine ice age conditions in the way mammoths and woolly rhinos were: S. fatalis was outright poorly adapted for cold, dry, open climates and habitats and was a forest and woodland specialist that was at its best during the warmer interglacials, and even the more generalized S. gracilis and S. populator weren’t dependent on grassland ecosystems and could also thrive in swamps, jungles, woodlands, etc. It’s ironic that the most iconic “ice age” animal of all was an animal more associated with interglacial habitats, especially given when it went extinct. Oh, and most docs conflate all 3 Smilodon species as being samey when they’re not (aside from the habitat differences, S. gracilis wasn’t a dominant predator due to there being two much larger predators around for the first part of its existence; and S. populator was a bit more cursorial than S. fatalis, though not to pursuit predator levels).
When I was a kid I played Zoo Tycoon 2 a lot and the smilodon in that was always one of my favorite animals to have in my zoos. Always had to had a few, forget lions or tigers in my zoo I wanted smilodons.
Great Video! Saw your highlighted comment & I'd like to share some interpretations of Smilodon that didn't make the cut but that I'm at least aware of: -Mark D. Wolf's Age of Mammals (A stop motion animated documentary that focuses on the Cenzoic Era & some of it's creatures; mostly mammals. Smilodon is depicted here, first attempting to hunt a Glyptodon but failing, then successfully managing to kill a Megatherium) -Wild New World/Prehistoric America (A BBC documentary that focuses on North American fauna during the Ice Age. I haven't seen the full documentary series but I've seen clips of it. It's made by the same animation company that made Monsters We Met/Land of Lost Monsters; so it re-using many of the same models, including Smilodon) -Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (A Smilodon Skeleton was seen coming to life in the film) -Disney's Lilo & Stitch: The Series (Season 2 Episode 11: Retro/In the episode, one of Stitch's cousins turns a Zoo's Tiger into a Smilodon) -Giant Monsters with Jeff Corwin (A special that aired on Animal Planet & was hosted by Jeff Corwin. In one segment, Jeff encounters a Smilodon, which chases him up a tree. Later, a group of them fight a Megatherium over a carcass. The model for the Smilodon was re-used for a Megantereon in another documentary; Before We Ruled) -Prehistoric Predators (A documentary series from National Geographic. One episode focused on the North American: Smilodon fatalis. Smilodon gracilis made a minor appearance in another episode that focused on Terror Birds) -Zoo Tycoon Franchise (Smilodon was one of the various adoptable creatures in both Zoo Tycoon: Dinosaur Digs & Zoo Tycoon 2: Extinct Animals) -Animal Crossing Franchise (Introduced in Animal Crossing: Wild World & continuing to their most recent game; The skeleton of Smilodon can be dug up & donated to the Museum) -The Velvet Claw (An animated documentary that focuses on predators; Smilodon makes a few appearances in it) -Natural History Museum Alive with David Attenborough (A special hosted by David Attenborough in which he discusses many of the specimens at the London Museum of Natural History. Smilodon makes an appearance in the special but unlike many of the other animals features, it only comes to life as a skeleton) -Dinotopia Franchise (Smilodon has only made a few brief appearances throughout some of the books. It appeared as statues in Land Apart from Time but made a physical appearance in Journey to Chandara. Smilodon made a larger appearance in a side series book; Sabertooth Mountain) -Calvin & Hobbes (In one strip; Calvin's family go to a Natural History Museum and briefly see a model of a Smilodon) -Star Wars Tales of the Jedi (The first episode of the series featured a creature known as a Raxshir. It's appearance is heavily based on that of Smilodon & other saber-toothed cats) -Time Warp Trio (S2E9: Caveman Catastrophe/A Smilodon appears briefly in this episode.)
The model of Smilodon that was used for Monsters We Met originated in a BBC TWO series called Wild New World as well as the Mammoths, Mastodon and Ground Sloth.
I loved Monsters We Met! The short-faced bear Arctodus simus was fascinating. And of course anything from Walking With is always top tier, even if it's outdated 20 years later.
That depiction is one of the better ones too, though it does have a couple of usual Smilodon depiction issues and also argues in favour of the discredited Clovis Comet hypothesis to explain megafaunal extinctions.
It's a shame that the Age of Mammals wasn't mentioned here, but it's a mini documentary that not many people know much about. I had it on VHS along with Dinosaurs: The Terrible Lizards on the same tape.
You're right about Smilodon's taxonomic affinities. Smilodon is part of the Machairodontinae subfamily, while tigers and other extant big cats are members of the Pantherinae subfamily.
Great Video on Smilodon, i also been calling it a Sabre Tooth Tiger ever since i found out of the Animal in Ice Age when i was 10 years old at the time. I loved that film to Death ^_^ Another one interpretations was in an Anime called, Dinozaurs. it was more of a Transformer-Dinosaur Anime of a group of Resurrected Prehistoric Animals (Dinosaurs/Pterosaurs/Cenozoic/Marine Reptiles) become Dino Knights and their planet from evil Dragozaurs. it was a Dinosaur like Anime i watched as a kid long before Dinosaur King, which i also love too.
It's perfect. I go to research Smilodon for paleoart purposes, check some Mauricio Anton pieces, get some references, watch some jaguar and bear hunting videos to get an idea between the two how they might subdue prey, and then you come out with this. Absolutely lovely.
Great video!! If I might make a recommendation, I think you’d like the animal designs in One Piece- there’s a group of characters who can transform into dinosaurs, including smilodon!
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. You can encounter "sabertooth cats" which are clearly based on smilodon. They live in tundra & taiga-like areas, they're slighly smaller than bears, and they're solitary
Awesome video!!! Also I think why Smilodon was called the Sabertooth Tiger is like how JellyFish are called well, JellyFish, even tho JellyFish are even farther apart to fish than Smilodon was to Tigers
For the Primal Smilodon the ones who appear in Echos of eternity the opening, with Spear's backstory the Smilodon there are most likely S. Populator, while the one in The Night feeder was either S. Gracilis or S. Fatalis.
I hate how Life on Our Planet had Smilodon destroying a terror bird, which is so awfully unrealistic. Never in a million years would they try hunting a terror bird. That’s ludicrous.
After looking at the extended gumline out of every original Smilodon skulls that I've seen so far, I have a theory their long saber-like canines won't be showing much at all. It will be partially covered with their lips.
Hey there! So with Power Rangers there’s actually 3, with the show Dinocharge in an episode with Dakota (who is a caveman who got frozen in time) there’s a flashback to where he fights off a Smilodon
When you do these Many Interpretations videos you should include things like plushies and toys. They may not be media but they definitely count as interpretations.
Something to possibly include in an Honorable mentions thing: technically, Anguirus (might be spelled wrong) from the Godzilla franchise is an ankylosaurus interpretation.
15:00 ok what a coincidence! My grandfather also recorded a lot of documentaries for me when I was kid! Now of course, the VHS or DVD's of them no longer work but many of them I have as a new DVD or I can find online.
Quest for Fire is a genius film, it was actually filmed before multiple humaties was a proven fact and film "predicted" a lot of cool things - sapiens wearing ochre, mating between species, some more advanced than others, kinda predicted denisovans, landscape where they all could cross rach other etc A lot of inaccuracies, but still, for 1981 film really cool)
God I recall seeing those horror movie Sabertooths when I was younger. Curiously they spelt those movies Sabretooth and Attack of the Sabretooth instead of Sabertooth and Attack of the Sabertooth. Maybe they were avoiding copyright? I dunno. As for whether these movies are related I don't know. I see stuff claiming they're connected and seen stuff claiming they're not. They're b movies made in the early 2000s so info on them is lost to time. Amusingly for Attack of the Sabretooth there was 3 Saber Tooth Tigers. A slightly smaller female, a slightly larger male and a one ton freak that could only move by dragging itself on its front two legs. Neat they acknowledged that a Sabre of that size would have trouble moving. I really want a new horror movie focused around a Saber Tooth Tiger. They're a perfect horror movie choice. Just imagine being in the dark and all you hear is the low growl before a flash of those pearly white teeth.
There was also one in a Episode of Dan vs (At least I think it was a Smilodon. Looked at least a lot like one). I think it was in that Episode where his Cat was stolen because it belongs to a rare Breed
How would you feel about doing a terror bird video? All this talk about saber teeth and their relation to terror birds like Phorusrhacos is making me want a video starring it.
I think mostly everyone's first time seeing it in media was ice age. Even though i think it's very inaccurate with the certain animals living in that time period.
Even though it's basically the same design as the Monsters We Met model, Smilodon also appeared in Wild New World/Prehistoric America. Also just like with Alpha, the "Sabertooths" from Quest For Fire are actually Cave lions with saber teeth (because a regular ol' lion [or cave lion] isn't terrifying enough apparently 🙄)
To me, the most iconic sabertooth will always be the 10,000 B.C. one. Granted, its size is exaggerated, but still, that tiger face and liger body pattern. You can't deny that was top tier creature design for its' time. Still, honorable mentions are... Ice Age Walking with Beasts Prehistoric Park Sinbad Life On Our Planet Jurassic World The Game Extinct
11:18 Since you mentioned the Aladdin TV series, I'll mention that there's also a T. Rex that appears in two episodes as the main antagonist for those appearences. A rex also appears in The Little Mermaid series and the Tarzan series, as well as a couple of other dinosaurs in the latter. I know that video is likely already overflowing with entries, but I thought I'd at least mention it, since you like to see the animated depictions of these creatures
Probably the most niche one that probably no one’s their kemono friends has smilodon in the games But technically it just a gijinka version of a smilodon I don’t know if it counts
Surprisingly, there’s also some Minecraft interpretations, in the spinoff Minecraft legends there’s a fantasy creature called the Regal Tiger, it’s a combination of Smilodon and a modern tiger, but it’s purple. There’s also some Minecraft mods like fossils and archeology, unusual prehistory and the dawn era. If you also count Pokémon there’s raikou and chien pao as well
I would like to mention the Snow Stalker from The Future is World. It's not a cat, but rather a giant wolverine that evolved to fill in the sabre-toothed cat niche.
Quick note!
Though, I try to include as many depictions as possible, not everything makes the cut for one reason or another.
I will likely start to include a sort of ‘honorable mentions’ section. That way, even more depictions can be included, and I bypass some reasons I have to cut out certain interpretations.

Couldn’t agree more. WWB was the series that opened up my love for sabre-toothed cats as a kid!
I SEE PRIMEVAL SMILODON IN THE THUMBNAIL, I CLICK
Same. It made me happy to see that “Primeval” was included. On an unrelated note, I also was happy that “Dino Dana” was included.
@@TheWarriorWithDucks the Dino Dana design looks absolutely gorgeous so it would've been a shame not to include it
It is a badass sabertooth!
Since we're also doing mammals, the many interpretations of Glyptodon/Dodecirus would be cool
And the mammoth next!!$
As much as I love Primeval their designs can be a bit hit or miss (especially in the later seasons) but I think their Smilodon is one of their best. I love the colors and patterning.

Smilodon isn't getting talked that much about recently, Im glad this video changes that. Good video!
A surprisingly diverse catalogue. You can have such a variety of cat depictions.
12:26 No way a Legends of Chima mention
That was an unexpected surprise , but a welcome one.
In ZT2: Extinct Animals, the Smilodon has a brown-spotted coat with a white underbelly similar to Prehistoric Kingdom's version, but - If you're lucky enough - you'll get a Leucistic or Melanistic version, when adopting Smilodon. Lil sad the sabertooth from Skyrim didn't get brought up but like you always say not every interpretation can make the cut.

This guy has a dad and a bro kind of personality, love it ❤
Funny enough, in the Lilo and stitch series, they had a smilodon. There’s also the beasts of the Mesozoic line since they’re making a smilodon as well if you count those
13:54 Catwoman scolding the sabertooth
lol 😂😅

I imagine it would have been fine in forests, especially redwood and conifer, plenty of cover for it to hunt and shelter in.
Thanks for including my PoT mods ! :D

I was hoping to see the sabre cats from Skyrim
The model of Smilodon that was used for Monsters We Met originated in a BBC TWO series called Wild New World as well as the Mammoths, Mastodon and Ground Sloth.
I loved Monsters We Met! The short-faced bear Arctodus simus was fascinating. And of course anything from Walking With is always top tier, even if it's outdated 20 years later.
17:57 yo I for-fucking-got about dino dana. I just got flashbanged with memories bruh
You forgot to include the one from “Prehistoric Predators”. I love that Cenozoic docuseries.
That depiction is one of the better ones too, though it does have a couple of usual Smilodon depiction issues and also argues in favour of the discredited Clovis Comet hypothesis to explain megafaunal extinctions.
Amazing vid, glad smilodon is getting covered.
Beautiful cat by the way🐈
It's a shame that the Age of Mammals wasn't mentioned here, but it's a mini documentary that not many people know much about. I had it on VHS along with Dinosaurs: The Terrible Lizards on the same tape.
Wow! Never realized really how many interpretations of smilodon there are…
You're right about Smilodon's taxonomic affinities. Smilodon is part of the Machairodontinae subfamily, while tigers and other extant big cats are members of the Pantherinae subfamily.
So you're a Star Wars fan? Well, I don't have a collection, but I do have a dinosaur collection, and Jar Jar is part of it
Great video! There's also this TV series called "Zoo" which has a decent Smilodon, although it appears very little.
Loved that series. A shame they didn't do a third season.
Great Video on Smilodon, i also been calling it a Sabre Tooth Tiger ever since i found out of the Animal in Ice Age when i was 10 years old at the time. I am shocked Zoids wasn't mentioned. The Saber Fangs look a lot like Smildons

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. You can encounter "sabertooth cats" which are clearly based on smilodon. They live in tundra & taiga-like areas, they're slighly smaller than bears, and they're solitary

It's in Zoo Tycoon and Wildlife Park too

i appreciate that you dont just discount any of these fossil fighter designs. ive loved dinosaurs my whole life and its a really great game!
I abslutely loved the Prehistorik park smilodon episode as a child, the colouration and pattern is one of my favorite with prehistoric kingdom skin
Great video! Can we get a sauropod (brachiosaurus or apatosaurus) interpretations video?

Something to possibly include in an Honorable mentions thing: technically, Anguirus (might be spelled wrong) from the Godzilla franchise is an ankylosaurus interpretation.

It has also appeared in quite a bit of fantasy media
Saberleomon deserved at the very least a mention
May the force be with you
HOLY SHIT DINO DANA MENTION PEAK VIDEO 🔥 🔥 🔥
Suggestion: The many interpretations of Archaeopteryx
Awwwe, Ahsoka is very cute :3 Give her some cuddles from me

Amusingly for Attack of the Sabretooth there was 3 Saber Tooth Tigers. A slightly smaller female, a slightly larger male and a one ton freak that could only move by dragging itself on its front two legs. Neat they acknowledged that a Sabre of that size would have trouble moving.
I really want a new horror movie focused around a Saber Tooth Tiger. They're a perfect horror movie choice. Just imagine being in the dark and all you hear is the low growl before a flash of those pearly white teeth.
There's a channel 4 documentary called extinct and one of those episodes talks about the sabertooth cat, and there also prehistoric predators too
they were also smilodon in TES V: Skyrim, but they were pretty standard
There was also one in a Episode of Dan vs (At least I think it was a Smilodon. Looked at least a lot like one). I think it was in that Episode where his Cat was stolen because it belongs to a rare Breed
I thought of Booster when buying the Hammond Giga and only seeing the Hammond Therizinosaurus in stock on Target lol
Smilodon also appeared in season 2 of ZOO, for like...10 seconds
Can’t wait for the many interpretations of T. rex dude 😊
Omfg it finally happened smilodon mentioned!!!
"Can I pet dat Dawg? Can I pet dat Dawwg?"
How would you feel about doing a terror bird video? All this talk about saber teeth and their relation to terror birds like Phorusrhacos is making me want a video starring it.
I really expected the sabercats from Skyrim to be on this list
I think mostly everyone's first time seeing it in media was ice age. Even though i think it's very inaccurate with the certain animals living in that time period.
Have you seen Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger? It has a Smilodon too.
PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON THE MOST AWESOME DINOSAURS... TERROR BIRDS!!!!!
Ahsoka is very cute
29:12 I thought I was looking at a giant obease saber.Saber. with nipples.
Smilodon mae an appearance in the show, "Zoo".
You and your wife should try to check that out.
aww, Asoka looks like a little marshmallow
also really surprised with this video, lot of shows i never watched here
PK undoubtedly wins for me. Same as you, that grey and orange one is so aesthetically pleasing.
I remember Zoo Tycoon having a smilodon.
I remember Zoo Tycoon 2 NOT having one, but it's been some time.
I hope you check out Zoids
24:30 the scrimblo
You forgot about prehistoric predators which had smilodon appear alot
Even though it's basically the same design as the Monsters We Met model, Smilodon also appeared in Wild New World/Prehistoric America.
Also just like with Alpha, the "Sabertooths" from Quest For Fire are actually Cave lions with saber teeth (because a regular ol' lion [or cave lion] isn't terrifying enough apparently 🙄)
I was hoping you would include Chima’s Sabertooth Tribe
Ray harryhausen smilodon is definitely the biggest one. Soft spot for it.
A show that has many great designs is Prehistoric predators. It has Smilodon, Dire wolf, Terror bird and many others carnivores.
I wanna hang out with this guy, would be the only people to find me cool
To me, the most iconic sabertooth will always be the 10,000 B.C. one. Granted, its size is exaggerated, but still, that tiger face and liger body pattern. You can't deny that was top tier creature design for its' time.
Still, honorable mentions are...
Ice Age
Walking with Beasts
Prehistoric Park
Sinbad
Life On Our Planet
Jurassic World The Game
Extinct
11:18 Since you mentioned the Aladdin TV series, I'll mention that there's also a T. Rex that appears in two episodes as the main antagonist for those appearences. A rex also appears in The Little Mermaid series and the Tarzan series, as well as a couple of other dinosaurs in the latter.
I know that video is likely already overflowing with entries, but I thought I'd at least mention it, since you like to see the animated depictions of these creatures
Diego should have 4 thick fingers instead of 3 like in ICE AGE
There was a slurpasaur Mammoth in one movie
Yeah you should check out the sabertooth movies.
smilodon is soooooo cool
Probably the most niche one that probably no one’s their kemono friends has smilodon in the games
But technically it just a gijinka version of a smilodon I don’t know if it counts
If you also count Pokémon there’s raikou and chien pao as well
Do too many interpretations of terror birds
I would like to mention the Snow Stalker from The Future is World. It's not a cat, but rather a giant wolverine that evolved to fill in the sabre-toothed cat niche.
10:24 I get it’s stylised, but I don’t like the colouring for shira TBH
Could you do the wooly mammoth or monolophosaurus next?
The Smilidon design of Ancestors the game is pretty cool
That was Machirodus
@@Dinosswordok 👍
