- How the heck do you write a good opening scene to a film?
Great filmmakers have already figured out how to get us hooked; let's learn from 'em!
"The Dark Knight" with that sick Joker reveal, the sad reality-check at the beginning of "Everything Everywhere All at Once", and Noah Baumbach's perfect opening scene in "The Squid and The Whale".
In this video essay, I explore what makes a good opening scene and how it can set the tone, introduce characters, and create a sense of anticipation for the rest of the film.
I also made a fun little short film and wove it into the video. Hope you like it!

Sean, I believe you have already become who you want to be, you're not just a fantastic cinematographer, you are an extraordinary DP, aneachch time I watch i am immensly inspired to do more, to be more, to tell more, you do what i want to be doing, i don't know if anyone noticed, but the title and ending of this film, is shown in the first scene, watching again you can see the intention behind it, the detail is shot decision, and words,
DO you think these people can be who they want to be?,
film starts with him saying i am uploading the video this week, meanwhile he procastinated it for a week,
and the last scens shows him uploading the film, being who he wants to be,
Unbelievable, bro got us hooked the exact same way, and you dont even realise it

I've seen so many videos about the same topic but they all talk about the opening scene in Inglorious Basterds, out of all the videos I've seen yours is genuinely the most unique and talks about movies Ive never even heard of. Def gonna check some of these out, the amount of work you put into the movie choices, writing and editing is really impressive 👏
