I absolutely adore this song by Bob Marley, in fact the whole exodus album is absolutely fantastic! Tabs for the guitarsolo you can find here: bit.ly/3wYn7AM

      I. The late 90’s, I was lucky enough to get to see Junior Marvin, and his excellent band, with various members of the Wailers, at a smallish bar(it had two floors), several times. He’d play a few nights in a row, sometimes on the way down to South Florida, and again the way back up, depending on where his tour took him that year. He could really put on a killer show, whether playing Bob songs, or Hendrix, or his own music. Really everything was made enjoyable, snd he didn’t just play reggae all night. He could really rock, or get bluesy, and jam out for 8 to 10 minutes or more. I still remember watching how he played certain Marley songs, and still use his chord voicings today.

Behind a star lies a great band: The Wailers is a clear example.

It is, but there are a few other even better recordings on Spotify now, from the same time. Check them out, if you haven’t already.
I got to see Junior Marvin and his band, in the late 90’s, a few times. Even ended up hanging with him and some of the band, one night. He would always come through the beach tourist city, across a small bay, from where I grew up. He played a small venue, called Hog’s Breath. Saw Los Lonely Boys there right before they had their hit, and won a Grammy, at the same place, along with George Clinton once there. It was really too small for George’s regular show, so it was cool getting to see a smaller band, and stage show, version of that too.

The "authentic" way is with downstrokes, but obviously upstrokes make more sense for only hitting the top strings. But in reggae, they just focus on muting the unwanted strings so they can chop with a downstroke. I only say "authentic" in quotes because it's not necessary and doesn't really change the tone. And this is one of my favorites by Bob, this solo fits perfectly in this version compared to the alternate version.

Great demo, thanks. Many years ago I remember Gary Moore, the great blues rock guitarist being interviewed on BBC radio, I think by Tommy Vance, saying that he loved this solo. You could hear the DJ nearly fall off his chair! A reggae guitarist? But this and the solo on the live version of No Woman No Cry are absolute masterpieces.

    Ah! Yes! Finally Bob Marley
    Thank you very much!!
    Some great solo's there!
    - Stir it up
    - Lively up yourself
    And the most epic!
    - Concrete Jungle !!
    But the most difficult?
    Is the Caution riff
    It's in the phrasing
    So tricky
    - Caution
Always wanted to ask you if you could find out how that exactly works..
    It's so elusive
I've played two reggae bands for years and know most Marley songs by heart, when you dive into it, there's such riches in melodies, chord progressions, bass lines..
    Who The Cap fit
    Natural Mystic
    High Tide Or Low Tide

I’ve been listening to a lot of reggae recently and have been really being listening in on the guitar. I used to always think it was simple and bit boring but I was so wrong. Yes, it is quite simple but it’s all about t layering and playing with a bit of swing. Great lesson ❤
