    ***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
    Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
    We put out 5 new videos every week! Tuesday through Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we transition from city dwellers to full time homesteaders!

      I concur on the apple cider & kombucha "oops" vinegar rinse! I have long thick naturally curly hair and super hard water. I didn't believe the detangle claims made about it on another site & had to try it for myself boy was I pleasantly surprised and my hair is so bright & shiny since I've switched. Am still trying shampoo alternatives too.

      You can make your own scooby using unflavored raw kombucha from the grocery store, add that to black tea and sugar, date the container and let it sit in the pantry, It will happen I’ve made it.

    Second ferment is super easy without buying juice!! Use a couple pint jars with lids, mushed up a few berries from ur raspberry/blackberry brambles (if u freeze berries let them thaw a bit) add the kombucha to the jars and close the lids tight for 2-3 days... you will have a super carbonated sweet 2nd ferment kombucha drink!! For all the city folk out there reading this... fresh or frozen fruit works great!!

      Do you refrigerate it during the second fermentation

      Amelia Kat when you do the second fermentation leave it outside for a better result and then the 3rd day you can put it in the refrigerator.

    • @cevejaaahh
      @cevejaaahh 4 года назад +9

      Never open before refrigerate because it can make a mess

    • @coloradokid8321
      @coloradokid8321 2 года назад +4

      @@ameliakat9982 - No, you do the second ferment at the same room temperature. HOWEVER, you need to use special heavy duty bottles (like the ones with a spring top that you use for bottling beer). Or you can reuse store bought Kombucha bottles and lids that you buy at the store (like GT’s). The point is you need bottles that won’t burst during the carbonation process! If you let ferment longer than a couple days, then you should “burp” the bottles very carefully every 24 hours after the first couple days. Then you want to refrigerate (as the cold temperature will reduce the Carbon Dioxide pressure before opening). It’s always good to open your bottles over a bowl or sink (in case the CO2 goes crazy).

    Yes! I have been adding home grown ginger in my second ferment and it tastes so delicious. If you let it get super fizzy it has a mild ginger beer flavor.

    Yay, you were right, my chickens loved the old scoby! Also I ended up with Kombucha vinegar and I used it as a toner and my skin is soooo soft. Also put it on my stubborn toenail fugus and after applying it twice a day for three 3 weeks, the fungus is gone! I can't believe it! thank you.

    I like flavoring my kombucha during the second fermentation with sweet tea. I use hibiscus loose leaf along with a spiced tea or ginger root and make sure to add a lot of sugar to the tea. works well for me!

    I use Kombucha in the first ferment as they did back in the 1700s. Its good. I do it both ways and bottle it with apple juice. You can fry and eat the Scoby, its tastes like mushroom.

      Sometimes with the SCOBY if it is tough enough, I will add pepper flakes (Korean brands) some chopped up scallions, a little sugar, grated carrots, and napa cabbage. I have airlock jars so I will do that and put it back in my pantry. Wait a few days to a week and oh man its good stuff.

    Great video, I have been drinking about an ounce of kombucha every morning for 6 years. I make it in a half gallon jar now and that way I don't have too much. I do asecond ferment with berries from my garden or in winter I use elderberry juice that I also grow and juice. I started to make it totally with green tea and love the flavor. I also think that it's bringing back the color in my hair.

    The shampoo.....I just ordered a ginger plant that is used for washing your hair, its called Pine Cone Ginger. We are getting away from all chemicals so I decided to grow my own shampoo. We were stationed in Hawaii for 6 years and as a hairdresser, I worked on beautiful long hair. Many times I was given a small bottle container filled with this ginger, to use as shampoo. Just look it up and you will get all the info you need to make your own shampoo using the Pine Cone Ginger plant. Love what you share!!!! Many Blessings!

    I've been making Komucha for about 30 years. I do it all very similarly to Sarah. I do have a tip, thought. When your water is hot in the sauce pan, brew your tea there and you can add the sugar at the same time. Next, fill your jar about 1/2 to 2/3 full with your cool water, add the hot sweet tea, starter kombucha liquid then skoby. So, what's the difference, where's the tip? you might ask. Well, doing it Sarah's order of operation (with hot water going into jar first) I have cracked several jars. Also, I have found that my kombucha seems to be more clear, doesn't get cloudy.

I make vinegar from it for salad dressing, add to water for me or the animal's water. I usually cut up or puree rhe scoby. to eat it in my drinks. I've seen a soap recipe with the scoby. I loved the info and glad you made it :) Good info and good memories. I just did not work out for me, I could not handle the taste, I did not feel better for using it. Not that it is bad, it is great. I might try again down the road :) and love all your videos, I so enjoy them

    I'm excited and a little nervous about trying it, but I'm determined to give it a go.

    Excellent. I used to have that years ago and I thought I knew it so I fed the entire lot to the hens. Woops.
