To me, steampunk is combining the beauty of the past with the functionality of the present. I know that's not the proper definition, just my take on it.
I was born like this.I didnt even know it had a name.My family always found it entrtaining.Me in my goggles, tinkering with things.I turned out to be a visual artist, but an illustrator. But I always dressed like this.So odd, right?
Very interesting interview ! Stunning Exhibition ! Amazing Art !
It's so cool that a classic film like Wild Wild West is still inspiring people to create fanart even today, nice vid.
Great! I'm a year 6 and I got into Gateways and I had to learn about the steampunk era. This video really helped me a lot so Thanks!
:)
Starting work on my outfit for the steampunk festival in September here in Nor Cal, I absolutely love the style of the art and the fashion, the working machines are amazing. Last year I saw a motocycle that ran off steam.
1:20 what a wonderful explanation of what Steampunk is. I like poeple that can explain their hobbies without speaking completely in jargon and being snooty, not even tongue-in-cheek.
Awesome collection. I particularly liked Dr Grymm's Eye-Pod. From what I've been told this badboy actually works too! Awesome stuff.
man I wish I had seen this. There should be a permanent museum dedicated to this.
steampunk seriously is the most beautiful style ive ever seen... ive alays loved it... i mena i love the victorian area but i also love those sience and fantasy stuff... this is so PERFECT...
man i love this sort of art! ....thats so amazing! Love it!
I saw the exhibition yesterday and it was really interesting. I loved the fact that everything was actually functional, as well as looking great. My favourite piece was probably the computer keyboard. It looked so cool, I want one!
Also, the red leather mask at 2:10 looks just like the Pyro wearing the Brigade Helm hat from Team Fortress 2. xD
If stuff looked like that today I think it would be a good thing. I swear more people would grow up being very artistic and there would be a ton more inventors out there.
Steampunk SHOULD be our future! It looks so crazy but so smart at the same time! Thumbs up for steampunk!
I need to visit this sometime! I love steampunk
im new to this steam punk ,..i like it....the art is very good indeed.!!
Doc Brown's time-machine train in the 'Back to the Future III'; the car, submarine, and other machines in the 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'; Dracula's vampire supercharging machine (to which Frankenstein's monster was strapped) in 'Van Helsing', and all of the fashion in these 3 movies, are examples of steampunk. You'll see plenty of steampunk in the video game 'Bioshock Infinite', where just about all of the action takes place in a floating city in a slightly-alternate 1912.
Damn, you just got to love those steampunk clocks.
That...is.....amazing :O So glad the Steampunk movement is...well.... Building Steam!
A a big steampunk fan myself...wish I could go to this freakin awesome exhibition. Sadly not many ppl here in Singapore know anything bout steampunk.
I'd like to see a Steampunk style pushpull tubeamp with plasma speakers, with the arcs nicely displayed. THAT would be awesome.
First time I got a glimse of the Steampunk world it was when I saw Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.
And I think it's beautiful
Dude!! I freakin LOVE steampunk!!! XD
This is cool...It really reminds me of shows like SteamBoy and Last Exile (this one being my fave show of all time). If it wasn't so far away from were I lived I would visit it :P
I love the steampunk goggles/glasses! They look so fucking cool yet look like torture devices
E/T-Pod ideas are BRILLIANT !!
Steampunk is fascinating.. Though I never had the courage to actually visit a convention or something, I love how it looks like. I don't even know why, honestly, but whenever I see gears, ancient clocks, goggles and victorian clothing, it somehow fascinates me.. how strange.
a T-Pod... sounds like something i have been looking for, for a long time
Man, I love this stuff
Excellent video
geez,
steampunk and art deco, the 2 best styles ever incepted!
What a cool exhibit!
LOL the 'eye' pod was awesome!
Beautiful stuff!👍👌..
This would be amazing to go to!
I know it was stupid but, I seriously thought I was the only one. Nice to see more.
@Deathrune456 no need for boilers and steam, all the mechanical parts can work with compressed air, all you need is a high pressure air tank. small ones are used for paint-ball markers now, and some bigger ones have been used to power cars.
thanks for the definition
steampunk stuff is amazing !
Awesome, simply awesome.
This is so Cool! I love the clocks and other items made with metal. The masks are a bit creepy. What's with the Goth Girl trying to cross over to Steampunk? Oh well, they're very creative artists. Love it!
Love this!!!!
anyone notice the looped background ambient sound in the art gallery
we should build an entire city in the steam-punk style, a real one.
So I started making steampunk paintings. Any ideas what object to do next? :)
Brilliant stuff.....i really could get into steampunk now.....where do i get those goggles?
I would very much like to go see it. Jolly good.
Thank you

I soooo love steampunk!!!! i've always been reading to jules verne!!!! my main inspi°!!!
I went to see it IT WAS AWSOME!
Steam is merely the working fluid, not the energy source. It still requires an energy source. In Space 1889, for example, solar power is used by focusing the sun's rays onto a boiler.
Fantastic.
Phantastical.
A.M. Fortas
Phan? Like Dan and Phil? No? Okay.
Love it!
I believe Hollywood made a film about Steampunk featuring Will Smth and called - The Wild Wild West.
Awesome absolutely awesome.
Steampunk is freaking awesome
I really, really want that clock.
@RehGo thank you.
Once I get a time machine, I'm going to get me an E-pod and try and subtly make steampunk a reality...
On the E-pod what did he use for the sparky thing?
Is there somewhere in NY where a 12 year old might learn brass working and welding, and if so, about how far would it be from Altamont?
gawd i want one of those E-PODS or T-PODS, anyone know where i can get one/comission one/buy one/make one?
@aramon5 That's because 9 is a steampunk movie.
2:11
Tom Banwell masks... the best and only!
Respect from Tulsa...
That's so awesome
@K000lDUDE1 Hayao Miyazaki has a couple that are steampunk-ish "Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind" and "Howls Moving Castle"
@gnomium41 May I ask what was incorrect?
This is awesome. Just one question though, where are the steampunk marital aids...?
Get comfortable, because I may need 3 posts to explain it. As often as I have seen steampunk around me (in film and in literature), I wasn't aware of the WORD being used for this concept until 2 days ago, and this is coming from someone who has read sci-fi/fantasy for nearly 27 years.
'Steampunk' is a word created by sci-fi author K.W. Jeter, in a letter he sent to 'Locus' magazine in 1987. It seems to be the other side of 'cyberpunk', obviously applied to the world of the steam age. (Cont'd)
@jesperjesper123 i have to disagree i sorta think i may of liked bioshock and bioshcok 2 the same, but i dont know about the third one, i mean a city in the sky now?
It is, the way I see it, a modern-day interpretation, or re-interpretation, of the technology, art, fashion, architecture and lifestyle of most of the 19th century and quite probably a piece of the 20th, specifically, the entire Victorian age and the years leading up to the end of World War I; which is pretty much the 2nd-half of the 19th century right up to c1920. The first use of the word in literature was for the title of Paul di Filippo's 1995 book, 'The Steampunk Trilogy'. (Cont'd)
@dccfy3 Isn't art also the reimagining of average things?
steampunk was the main theme in the movie 9
im building a steampunk desktop, thank you for some ideas
its just awesome
temporal insulation device == definition of epic
@Serduun You do realize that Wild Wild West with Will Smith was actually based off of an old television show, right? The phrase and genre "Steampunk" was coined in the 80's and very EARLY 90's.
Is Steampunk a type of Alternate History, I'm not entirely sure what it is?
I laughed so hard at the "Eye Pod"
any one know how to spell the name of he Japanese watchmaker mentioned in this clip?
@mrhyde1888: Some people like to dress up and don't want to have to wait for halloween to do it (and then only once a year). It's another form of escapism. It's basically the same as people who like Star Wars and dress up as characters from the movies. Everybody has a different idea of fun.
awesome movie.
Holy crap this is is amazing.
Anyone got an idea how to make a samsung galaxy s2 phone case steampunk style?
Like just alter the battery cover.
Yeah!I would have mentioned Dishonored but at the time I didn't know of Dishonored, looks like an amazing game though.
I wish real life society looked like that it would be awesome.
@ThingsMarchBrings -
Check out "The Clockwork Dark" series by John Claude Bemis. It's young adult, but unique read. Booklist called it "A steampunk collision of heroes, mermaids, pirates, and good old-fashioned Americana.'
@Teristar1 alot are made! but if you google it, there are some people who sell it, i recamend buying a cheep pair of welding glasses, and spray painting them, or look up threadbanngers, they will show you some steampunk stuff from their steampunk how to speical
Brilliant.
what is the name of the japaneese watch designer?
Steampunk! (5% Tools, 5% materials, 90% Imagination)
As nerdy as the whole thing is, everyone looks pretty cool dressed up like that. Even the men look pretty good.
@foo871 ... thats probably one of the closest deffinitions of steampunk... though i've also seen a mix of roadwarrior in it as well but thats apocalyptic steampunk
Why isn't the photo used for this vid a TF2 Pyro helmet? :(
Reminds me a lot of the art that was on "The Nightmare before Christmas" movie
Wish I could have seen this exhibition - #steampunkqueen
I was wondering if dishonored was worth it? I loved bioshock to death but dishonored doesnt look to great?
I like the idea of the orthinocopter (I think that was its name).
2:47 how to make this one?
