- So what do you do when a guy on the internet tells you that you can make your exhaust sound better by pounding holes in it with a screwdriver? Did I just get pranked by ramming holes in my exhaust?

Cool
Just purchased a KLR.
Going down to buy a screwdriver now!
Terry Billings ,umm, if you don't have a screw driver you probably won't have the hammer....don't forget the hammer. lol jk but seriously, you might wanna start buying some tools so you can learn to fix your bike yourself so you don't have to pay a whole bunch to have someone else do it
Hey no problem! They fit like magic on the KLR and have done a pretty good jobs protecting the fairings from slight bumps and bruises. They also keep my legs warmer while riding in winter. They're called "Classic Accessories QuadGear ATV Tank Cargo Bag (Black)" and you can find them on Amazon. I got mine for $40, it looks like they're about $60 now.
The best sound out of a KLR 650 exhaust is the clank it makes when you rip it off a brand new bike and toss it on the steel recycle pile at the landfill.
As soon as I buy a KLR, I'm definitely doing this... THANK YOU TYLER!
Thanks so much man! That's actually the biggest compliment I could receive :) I guess that's all that matters in the end.
Still funny to come back to these
Judging from the turn signals and luggage rack, he has a Gen 1 KLR (2007 and older).
The Gen 2 (2008-2013) and Gen 2.5 (2014-18) have an updated muffler that has "drain plugs" for you to knock/wash carbon buildup that can cause chirping.
It always passed in Utah without any issues. Honestly I don't think it made much of a difference except the sound it made. Good luck and great choice on a bike!
The look on your face when you said you were about to ram a screw driver up your friends rear end was PRICELESS! I laughed so hard Mrs.Stacey came into the office to check on me. Wow, there was definitely a major change. I assume that starts to happen when the muffler needs to be repacked?
I'm not quite sure what it is, but it was definitely there!
hey i like to party
My Dad has an 05' KLR650 and we put a dowel (3/4") into the exhaust pipe, and took a 2 3/4" hole saw and drilled out the baffel. Took it completely out, and then took 3 clip nuts, a large flat washer and a small piece of tail pipe and made an end-cap for it. It's throaty and runs a lot smoother. His had that obnoxious chirp when it was stock too... haha.
I did it too. NT8 does know his stuff sometimes. I like the way it sound now.
Thanks so much! Good to have you aboard the eveRide train :)
I always thought the chirp was part of the bikes personality and kinda like it. No offense but this mod makes it sound like a lawnmower .
I've modified exhaust systems for decades anyone that tells you your engine will not benefit from breathing better doesn't know what their talking about ! My favorite mod is if you can get the muffler apart is to throw away all of the internal crap and just put the cap back on... sometimes however, that is just too loud to keep that way ! Honda Motorcycles of Old were notorious for choking down their motors to where they barely ran.... hense all my modifications ! if you have a 1 1/4" exhaust pipe header and it connects to the head.... and the muffler is only a 3/4" hole the engine is suffering, because of that...it can't breathe !
if you have close to a 2" header and a 1" exhaust outlet what is the point ? manufacturers did this to quiet down those big noise makers... but it turns out that you are 10 times safer if you are riding a bike that can be heard ! 80 DB is good enough
don't go to 120db like most harley riders do , that is excessive noise and frowned upon by everyone but bike owners !
inside a muffler can be rebuilt using expanded steel mesh formed into a tube and fiberglass matting packed around it
a baffle can be made for your bike that will quiet it down immensely ... all it takes is drilling a thousand holes in the pipe and closing off the inner end....
if you want to do it right, the outlet for the exhaust should be slightly bigger than the inlet . but not so big as to make it a megaphone effect. if you have a 2 into 1 muffler the outlet should be almost 3 times as big as the individual pipes coming in
this is the exact opposite of what manufacturers produce... anyone that says you want back pressure in your exhaust system
is totally misinformed ! ...WRONG ! you want a vacuum if you can get it not pressure !!!
and you can get that vacuum by running a long straight pipe to a certain length .... pulling up on the piston when it's on it's exhaust stroke really helps in performance ! however on a motorcycle that is close to impossible to accomplish the best you can hope for is no pressure or very little pressure on the exhaust stroke
...sticking a screwdriver in the muffler is Crude at best, but it is easy to see the performance increase and sound change....
what you need to do now is drill as many holes in the flat back of the muffler as you can get in there... I'ed go with 3/8" drill and drill about 50 holes ! .... drill 8 first and see if more is going to make it too loud , just put a ring of holes around the exhaust outlet
and you'll finally be rid of that back pressure !
Had to go back and watch this one again. My youngest absolutely cracks up when you go in fast motion. This was the first video of yours I watched. Oh how time has passed.
Ladies and gentlemen, the man himself! If you want to learn about ANYTHING KLR, including helmet cams, Navythomas8 is your man!
Why yes, this bike is turbo charged, how could you tell?
+Dar Tice lol :)
Nothing says TURBO like a KLR with a big screwdriver struck in the exhaust
I think you might be able to fix the chirp by following the cleaning procedure from the Clymer manual (this is what the two bolts on the bottom of the exhaust are for).
First thing I buy with a new bike are K&N air filters, a Clymer or Chikton manual, and the manufacturer maintenance manual.
Innnnnnteresting... perhaps it's not the holes that remove the chirp, but rather the repeated concussion to loosen the carbon. Cool tip!
Hey eveRideorg
Did the same to my '88some months ago.
This is the one single cheapest and most effective way to make a KLR sound like a real motorcycle again.
My chirp/tweety was so loud I coldn't hear the engine running any more!
Hear the difference:
KLR 650 sound after tweety killer mod (german)
And for all those who wouldn't dare to do this,...
Hey, its just a KLR, the kind of sado-maso bike that would endure just about any treatment AND be even better afterwards !!!
On the KLR I went with Kenda K270. Cheap, long-lasting, and pretty good in the dirt. On my DRZ I go with the Dunlop D606.
I cut the end off the muffler and pulled out the center pipe on my KLR , and it worked awesome
This is a very good question... hopefully somebody who watches can tell us if this ruins the spark arrest or not. Utah is dry, and I definitely don't want to start any fires.
Thanks man! Hopefully things have worked out with these "mods" and stuff. My paint is still holding strong! The KLR community is second-to-none.
So glad you included your son in the video. For me, that was the best part. Cute as heck and way to treat your son by including him in your efforts. Loved it!
Hey man first of all I appreciate your service (by your handle and your picture). Some KLRs tend to have it and some don't. I'm not sure exactly what it is that makes the chirp, but it might have something to do with altitude.
This and your honest klr review have given you a new subscriber good man, keep it up.
4:49 I killed myself laughing at this part
The chirping sound reminds me of a VW bug.
+rad sword old beetel sound 4 sure
I wish I never read this comment
NT8 won't steer you wrong. Your guest star Rocks.
got a 2014, can't say ive ever heard a chirping noise. the bike was sounding a little bit lawnmowery the other day until, but i put a new spark plug in there and now it sounds much better
I have the 94 too. One thing i'd do- i tore off the lic plate and mounting plastic while offroading it. Luckily i found the plate and mounted it higher up, also had to mount a small 12 lic plate lite. Now it won't get torn off my the tire.
Awesome guest star!
Yeah I think a drill would have worked fine, but NavyThomas8 showed me how to do this with a screwdriver because I'm pretty poor and didn't have access to a drill. Also, the screwdriver has some "bite" on its edge so you can make the little holes easier.
Was there a performance increase afterwards?
Would it be easyer to just drill it out?
No. Don’t do this.
I'm not sure, but NT8 did it on his newer KLR to get rid of the chirp. I have heard stock KLRs sound thumpy, and I've heard a few that all you can hear is the chirp. It might be an altitude thing?
I would like to get my kids a push motorcycle. How about a review on it or where did you get it? thanks
Haha thanks! This video would be completely different if my bike just belched out black smoke... and then died. But I still would have posted it because that would have been pretty funny!
I watched it again !!! and am still ROFLing!!! The kid added a Great Break in the action!!
Haha your awesome man!
I have a klx300 just a trail bike but it sounds amazing it has a full aftermarket exhaust on it had it sittin away for about a year then pulled it out and relized how much I love that bike again lol
what a great dad, nice video
Thanks NIGHTINGALE , that's the best comment/compliment I could get. Nothing matters more to me than my kiddos. :)
Omg... You listened to Thomas(Nt8)?? LOL
He was right cheap and easy mod.. I did it the hard way. I bought an aftermarket one :-)
Nice vid. I think I saw your G’s more then the bike dude. You know what I’m talking about, let’s just say I live in Utah too lol. God bless man
Sounds good, what year is this KLR ?
Oh my gosh! This is the very first video of you that I've ever seen! I searched something like that about half a year ago and just passed on. I mean, I liked (and still like) it but I felt like "yep, that's how you do that...I won't stick a screwdriver up my Motorcycle's ass". :D And now I found it while watching every single video of yours (I love you....not like.. LOVE love..but..uh... you know..) I wish I had a desert next to my house and just could go outside and have a great time. And that you're doing that kind of stuff for living is just fantastic! I'm 16 years old btw. When I finally get my 48 hp - driver's license I will just go to wherever you are, hug you and hopefully shred with you! You're my hero. Batman on a bike! :D
Much love! Hope, you'll read this comment..
evilchickenization Awwwwwweeeee man of course I'll read this comment! Dude for 16 you've got a wicked mustache! When that DL comes your way, get over here and we'll shred Southern Utah for sure! Funny how these old videos reflect on a different style in my life :D
BärchenVlogs ,
thanks hombre-gonna try this myself. you should have a show on tv. funny guy.
BOOYAH! Great decision, sir!
Function - Sparkle, it's a term to describe the modifications done to the KLR and other dual sports.
i am getting a brand new klr this weekend and have been reading for the past two weeks and watching videos have to say you are hilarious and that was awesome.. wonder if it would pass a state inspection or does that matter
Thank YOU for so much more than kind words! If you haven't already checked him out, see RideVictoria's latest video called *remember*. Know that many of us civy folks really REALLY appreciate what you guys do.
Nice work - sounds better for sure. Is it alot louder?
Took me several attempts as well. It would go away for a month, then I would have to do some more, comes back again, do some more... finally all gone!
Woohoo! No more people asking if we have turbos, eh? :)
awesome thanks. I have a pair of kenda k760 and im not a big fan of them because they are too knobby for the road in my opinion. anything about 45 and it feels like my bike is about to rattle apart. i guess its a good thing i got them for free.
Did you have to change the carburetor jets to maybe richen the fuel air mix?
+heffo and juff I didn't know about carburetors that much back when I did this, but it still ran nicely. I think the stock exhaust was choking it a bit anyway. For real airflow enough to merit a rejet I'd imagine a whole new exhaust would be needed, but I'm definitely not an expert on carbs!
cool dad, cool bike, both cool before and after sound. I like the stock better IMO
Was there a year that Kawasaki fixed this?? I have a 2015 and want a stock muffler and would prefer not to buy on with that sound lol. Also I've noticed that the 2015 has a different part number for the muffler and have no idea what is different for the year 2015. Any help would be cool! Many Thanks!!
Ahhh man I can't wait until I can cobble together the money to get him a little bike. Having my son on the trail with me would be better than any ride on any bike in any location. :)
Best KLR Video hands down. lol!
I'm training him up right :) In a year or two I'll have to pick up a 50 for him. He's only 2 1/2 and I took the training wheels off his bicycle yesterday.
Does he have a dirt bike now?
He can mod his own little bike... I just hope he doesn't think he can take a hammer and screwdriver to mine!
What brand are the saddle bags? Do they need a rack? Store u purchase them?
Sweet man! Where at? We should hit it up sometime.
There goes the spark arrestor .... but it sounds better!
That's only in the mornin!
I'm not sure with the angle if a drill would have grabbed the edge to make a hole. Worth a try, though. Good suggestion.
Do you think it'll be easier if you remove that lil tiny pipe that's inside the exhaust?
What are you using for the rear trunk? I'm looking for something of similar size.
I just drilled 4- 1/2 inch holes around the tail pipe. Top / bottom/ sides. Sounds a lot less than a chirping sewing machine now.
Yeah it was probably a shaving from where I'd mashed it up in there.
Partially, you are correct. But Just try to get them heat seized bolts out.
Doesn't that change the exhaust back pressure that the carburetor has been tuned to?
Now it's going to run hotter. Keep check your spark plugs. You dont want to burn a hole in your pistons.
My 2012 KLR does not make the chirp sound. All stock exhaust, no mods. I want to figure out how to make the exhaust quieter. Stock exhaust is too noisy for my liking.
3/8” diameter rebar, 18” long with a sharp point ground at one end. Pointy end into muffler. Whack other end with hammer... Yw
I wonder if this will allow water to collect in the outer baffle
I REALLY like the way the bike sounds now. Once in a while it will backfire now, but it's well worth it. Thanks for the awesome comment!
what kind of screwdriver did you use? and what hammer would you recommend to perform this farkle?
Did it affect your fuel consumption?
If that is a spark arrestor you just destroyed it. How about a SuperTrapp exhaust?
I like that your son is wearing his boots on the wrong feet.
after 08 they put a new muffler on the bikes. mines a 2017 and no chirp. but stock pipe is gone now anyways and on went an fmf powercore 4 lol
Dude! That sounds awesome
Mmmmm, I haven't heard of it but if it's cheap and simple, I'd love to hear more. Video? Link?
What exactly are you doing, knocking holes in the baffle or crushing it backwards? Wouldn't a drill work better?!
I very recently bought an 09 KLR. I haven't really paid any attention to the exhaust tone, but I'm sure I will now! LOL. Anyway, quite a few years back I owned a Suzuki DR350. The DR had a bolt in the bottom of the muffler, I suppose to drain it of water or condensation? I dunno. I removed that bolt, and that DR responded with a much more enjoyable tone. I did notice the KLR has a similar bolt. Just thought I'd mention.
There are clean out bolts on the KLR, under side of stock muffler you can remove
Wow, this is from so long ago.
its the baffels you hammer in at bro.... if you want it sound better grined the end off and take the baffel out and weld the end back on just trying to be help full bro .... peace out ....
+Mark Simpson I've heard that works much better, too! Maybe someday I'll get around to doing it... just soooo busy! :)
well thats the joys off been popula lol .... peace out bro .... simmy ..
TO SAVE MONEY JUST BUY AN AFTER MARKET PIPE BE MUCH HAPPIER SEE YOU HAVE A LITTLE BOY MONEY COULD BE TIGHT MAYBE THAT OLDER MODEL YOU CANT GET 1 I DONT NO SURE YU STILL CAN
eveRide ADV but what is the original sound the first or the fourth?
when I was a boy I remember that I always heard the sound number 1°
Can you do this to any type of bike say a cruiser style? Does it give a deeper sound to it? Thanks.
Hmmm I wouldn't try it without consulting the forums for your specific bike. The best pipes I had were just straight pipes without baffles... those things were mega loud!
Cruisers you can typically remove the baffles and they sound beefier.
Just do the frugal exhaust mod and pull that first baffle right now!
Sweet bike!
I mean the orange one.
I always thought the camera caused the chirp. Guess not. Sounds good now!
Hey just wondering what kind of tank bags you have thanks.
Your son Nick the next day: "Look Daddy - I fixed Mommy's car with your hammer just like you fixed your motorbike!"
Hey I just bought a KLR and when I’m at a red light, I’m consumed with exhaust fumes... I’m really tired of it :/ my old first gen was the same way and I thought the new ones wouldn’t be this way. Any advice guys? 🙏🏼
Not sure if anyones chimes in on this but you may have an exhaust leak at the head.
Hey everide, what kind of strider bike was your son riding? ?
That's a little "Y Bike" that we got from Costco several years ago. It's still going strong!
eveRide ADV Man, your boy's bike looks like it needs a small motor added to it by now. He's a couple years older by judging the video's posting date. >:D
***** Ah man as soooooon as I get a few bucks that's the next purchase. He's got all the gear and sometimes goes riding with me on the back, but a bike of his own would be so choice!
That'd be awesome. Maybe give him a little mic and camera set up an you could do a Father/son dual motovlog! That'd be awesome!
Do they sell drillbits there in usa
Only sometimes!
I know this is an old video, but it just explained why my KLR exhaust is hacked completely open at the back... I asked the seller about it and he was like "Yeah, the previous owner didn't like the sound so he took a knife to it..." It ain't pretty ;)
Warren Fletch Hahaha those poor KLR exhausts... mine is still sounding pretty good, though :)
Family comes first 😂😂😂
Well done. I prefer to throw away something as obviously inferior as the stock muffler in favor of an aftermarket piece but for the short term, killing the damn parakeet in there is a worthy goal.
