A small Greek village in Crete, Maleme, right next to Chania. It has about 710 inhabitants.
In Malame there is a base of the Greek air force and a military airport, the capture of which during World War II was one of the main goals of the German landing on Crete. Until the construction of the airport in Chania, this airport served as an international airport. Nearby is the German war cemetery - the burial place of most of the Germans who died during the fights for Crete and the victims of the military plane crash on February 9, 1975. The cemetery is maintained by the descendants of the buried soldiers.
