One year on ADHD Medication: My Experience

- Just sharing my experience after being on ADHD medication for a year (and some) now. Feel free to leave any comments and/or questions below! Or you can email me at ollieedquestions@gmail.com if you'd prefer.
People say that we are overmedicated or associate our medication with our daily living, yet they forget the fact that before we were medicated, we dealt with all of this negativity in terms of getting out of bed and not having any type of energy or motivation or psychological motivation to actually get out of bed and go about our days, they forgot that part that we were having those issues way before we got on medication❤❤❤❤
Yes very much so!
Its like that or developing a problem during medication use and only noticing that problem afterwards.
But i also think a big part of this problem is because medications like Dexamphetamine have a lot of stories going around where they cause euphoria in a lot of people who are prone to that and mostly in people who are straight up misdiagnosed.
@@TjallieBrrr I find it a bit funny or mysterious to make claims about (which makes it fun to me!) because diagnosis is tricky and I don't entirely believe in its basis a lot of the time, like a disorder is effectively just something where people sat down and were like 'these symptoms make sense to travel together', and these symptoms are the same thing we treat with medication, so I'd argue if you simply have 'relevant symptoms' diagnosis under some kind of disorder sort of becomes inessential.
I've never been on straight dex but I've been on Vyvanse and I think the presence of some 'euphoria' helped the efficacy, part of the problem for me is reward dysregulation (atypical depression etc) so something that can interact with that system seems to help, if I have more energy but I still feel like a robot then what's the point, etc. For me the more acute short term effect vanished in a few weeks but then I sustained a therapeutic effect just with the 'euphoria' of a generally lower and less consistent grade, which was perfectly fine or actually seemed generally more functional.
I say this just because I find sketching the boundaries around this stuff rather difficult and just the attempt to understand it is enjoyable, but I think these agents could potentially help a decent variety or assortment of people, just that chasing euphoria definitely becomes a trap, and in part to help prevent this I think you'd want to pursue the lowest dose with significant clinical benefit. Chasing hypomania or whatever has to be risky for anyone imo. But then once you do this sorting or adjusting, you'd think that really only primarily those with a relevant condition being treated (of whatever kind) would find the motivation to persist at this low/therapeutic/boring dosing regime. Like those with something to gain will just naturally be more compliant, while others will find more that they can 'take it or leave it'. At least this is what I'd expect to be.
Thank you. I love your bandwidth analogy.
I m a newly diagnosed 55 year old female. I have my first meds consultation mid April 2023 - yay🎉
Best of luck! Let me know how it goes/how it went!
So glad to hear from you again and to hear that the meds are working so well for you. Thank you. ❤️❤️
I’ve just been diagnosed with ADHD and Autism, I’m 51, it explains a lot about my past and my mental health issues. I suffer terribly from a lack of motivation to do anything and procrastinating, some days I achieve nothing and this pains me, I have so much to do and so much I want to do but nothing happens. I feel like I’m wasting my life.

Really appreciate this video. I'm on month 4 of Elvanse. Started on 30mg up to 50mg, though 50 was too much. So on 40mg now. But noticed the drop at 5 hours so on a split dose of 2 x 20mg daily which is better. I completely relate to your review. I notice it if I miss a day feel zero motivation and completly fatigued. But the pros are life changing. So glad it's worked out for you. Hoping I settle more as the months go by. 🤞👍
I hope so too, Aaron! Good luck wit it and keep me posted!
Thank you so much for documenting your experience. I find it very helpful
Just began taking elvanse and have been looking through your channel! Thanks for giving me an insight on the medication my man ❤
Thanks for watching! I hope you're getting on well with Elvanse
Thank you for sharing your honest review and story of being on medication for ADHD. I’m 23 and have only been diagnosed last October. Anyway! Been in CBT for 3 years, I’m now trying to start medication but I’m so worried it will never work for me. But I’m going to try! So thank you for sharing your experience and journey because it can feel super lonely not knowing anyone going through the same experience. All the best😊
How is the medication working out for you?
Thanks Rhi, appreciate it! All i can say is stick with it and dont feel too disheartened if one medication doesnt work for you, there are always alternatives. Keep up with a normal healthy lifestyle as well, thatll make a big difference! I notice a massive change when i start eating badly or exercising less. Just something to be conscious of i guess. Keep me posted with how you are getting on!
@@ollieedward643 Thank you for your reply! It’s nice to discuss this with someone☺️ I started taking 30mg of Elvanse 22/04 and must admit, my mind is super quiet! I can concentrate, stand and listen to conversations without walking off, retain what’s said to me and remember other things I need to in the moment, haven’t asked what’s someone’s said 1 minute after they’ve told me something, I’ve even walked in a busy shopping centre on payday weekend and didn’t get overwhelmed or over stimulated!! I just kept talking to my friend the whole time, total tunnel vision!😁 must admit, felt a bit anxious the first week and have headaches which are common side affects. I’ve noticed I feel now it’s been over a week, I may need a slightly higher dose. But overall, so glad I took the decision to try medication! Life feels easier when I take it😊
@@f50koenigg hey I’ve responded to Ollie’s comment below about how I’ve been getting on, thank you for asking!😊

Thanks for the perspective on these videos. Really appreciate you doing them. I’m just formalising my diagnosis and I’m desperate to get on medication to move forwards so this has been great to see your most recent update. Cheers.
Thank you, Tom!
Dude, welcome back! Good to see you. A friend showed me a clip from a MENtal health video and I'm sure it was you. Keep well. 💪
Thanks Charlie! Really appreciate the support my guy 👍❤️
Well done on your return to education. Stick at it: it'll be good for you to prove you can apply yourself and achieve that long term goal. I definitely couldn't enjoy that sense of achievement, being undiagnosed and unmedicated, and I felt like a charlatan after muddling through a BSc and MSc.
I also wouldn't have made it if the costs associated with further education were what they are now, either but I won't get political. 😁
Best of luck mate, your videos have been very encouraging for me as someone also titrating on Elvanse.
Thanks for your kind words John, appreciate you!
I'm about to start my titration period on Concerta and I'm really anxious about it. Really hoping it's as life changing as other people say. Thanks for making the video 😌
Good luck to you! Please keep me updated with how you get on 👍
Good luck. I've been on it (and other brands Xenidate and now Xaggitin due to supply issues) for just over a year now. I was scared tbh at first, but you should start off v gently on 18mg and titrate gradually.
I will post my experience.
Any update?
How's it going?
We need updates 😅😅
Hi Ollie
Thanks for the video, I'm now coming up yo a year of using Elvance, and it's all been very positive. The major issues that I had with adhd are now just in the bakground. I just needed confirmation that after a year of taking the medication, they are similar to other people and that there are no adverse effects.
Beard is looking brazy 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great stuff! What is good is I’m pretty much on par with you, every positive you speak of is what I’m experiencing. I have completed titration and now on the NHS care share scheme.
The only side effect is constipation, which I’m trying to adapt my diet to combat. Otherwise my life has improved in my wife’s words ‘ten times better than you were’…
Great to hear, Stephen! Long may that continue for you.
Try benefited or generic benefited, take double what they tell you to. Mix it into anything you're eating. Or take magnesium.
Love that! Flow state :) I just got on adhd meds and i noticed this morning I didn’t take it until 8:30 and I was a mess until 10 am. I’m going to try taking it an hour before I want to get up for the day.
I was in you position before now and it was hard to get things done and go out for social gatherings, I had to prepare my mind and body to go out it was a hassle, I used psychedelic mushroom which helped me tremendously, it was the best decision I made to get to where I am today , I get it from an online vendor run by a mycologist

Hi! I just wanted to thank you for sharing your journey. I've been watching since you started these.
I have now finally gotten my diagnosis and started on Vyvanse. Videos like yours have helped me get through my fear and stress about trying meds.
Please do keep updating us! I'd especially like to know how/if your life has improved in the big picture.
Like, some people finally get promoted, finally write their book, finally manage to have a relationship etc. So I'd love to hear how your life has changed since starting. If that's not too much for you to share of course.
Thanks so much for your comment! I will make a video on this in the future. Hope you are getting on well with Vyvanse.
Dude, im 38 and just got diagnosed with ADHD 3 years ago. Every medication under the sun, all shit. All made it wayyy worse. I take vyvanse now and at first i would take it then not take it or over take it or under take it because my impulsivity control was non-existent. I would go through periods of wicked hyperness and then just crash hard. But crashing for me is my body being exhausted, not my mind. That never stops. I have been taking the vyvanse 30 mg for 5 months consistently along with another medication and it has helped me drastically. When I dont take it, my mind tells me I dont need it or everything is fine but in reality, its not. Its just a vicious cycle that never ends. I started meditating, doing yoga daily, started school, left an extremely toxic 20 year relationship. The downside, for me, is the acne, the anxiety if I have coffee with my medication, def cant do that. My heart rate is always high but my blood pressure is low because im usually dehydrated but other than that. The impulse control, the motivation, the ability to focus and really internalize and think about things has made life worth living again for me. I thought medication was a horrible idea, i still do, even though I know the benefits of it. Are there terrible things about medications, yes. But benefit out ways the cons for me personally. Maybe in the future I wont need it but what ive learned is that my quality of life is based on how i feel and taking care of myself. I hope this helps someone. Peace.
Psilocybin is the final remedy for your health I've great benefit on em it really change my whole life for better.

I take my Elvanse at about 5am for the same reasons. Usually kicks in after 90 - 120 mins. Apologies to anyone about to have breakfast, but early is easier to accommodate the laxative effect it can have. Thank God I don't drink coffee. I'd never leave the house! 😳 All the best mate. 👍
Unfortunately I know exactly what you mean 😂
@@ollieedward643 There should definitely be an 'S' attached to ADH and D. 😁
Thanks for the sharing your experience. Taking any amphetamine for months, or longer is going to come with symptoms of physical withdrawal(malaise, low motivation, etc) when your not taking it. For this reason, and for long term health, I skip a couple days a week. I'm still figuring it out, but so far this has worked for me.
As an adult at 55 I was prescribed Adderall. I found that my brain was a wind tunnel with sticky nots flying around. I would grab one to read, but let go to grab another one before reading it. Now it’s a breeze and I can read a whole sticky note.
Really appreciate this video... ive come to the decison to try medication (just as there is a shortage) 👌 buttt.... its really nice to hear someones story and the postives it can bring.... 🥰
ADHD is 150% real, we struggle so much, but there is no actual shortage, it's almost like a way to test people's psychological barriers to suicide and staying alive, I don't even consider myself a conspiracy theorist at all, I can't stand conspiracy theorists to be honest with you, but I feel like this is definitely a method to keep people's sanity to a test, either they deal with being not medicated or end it all, that's how serious ADHD can be to somebody that is not taken seriously❤❤❤

Your videos are very helpful.
Glad to hear that!
38 years still yet untreated. Just figured out recently that I might have ADHD. My doctor thinks I have symptoms of that. But it needs to be confirmed by a specialist. And getting a hold of them in Germany is hard.
Interesting how you describe the grogginess. This is like the first hard test for me every single morning. To make it even out of bed. And my brain cannot think straight for an 1h or so. I need to wake up at 7 but I am not functional before 8:30 or even 9am. So I am always late to work. This thing has cost me several jobs on top of my bad attention, forgetfulness, and messing up on the details time after time. People have a terrible perception of me because of that. So hearing how the medication helps you to get out of bed when you need to is great news. I hope it will work the same way for me. But even if it turns out that I do not have the condition I now know by now that the situation is not normal, and that I need to find help in some shape or form.
Let me know if you’re still looking for a German psychiatrist. :) I can recommend my own.

i know i need some help because i finished the video and i don't know what i was just watching
Currently trying to get assessed to see if I have ADHD, pretty sure but I guess you never know till a doc diagnoses you, interested in trying medication, a lot of excitement/anxiety but hopeful for the best
Good luck to you!
Thank you for the heads-up! I'm on methylphenidate since a year and a half, basically all good. I just experience a feeling of being disconnected from the world / my emotions when I take it regularly, like every day from morning till evening. So I tend to just take it occasionally, when I have to work or get things done. Do you have any experiences like this on your medication?
Edit:
I just watched on of your other videos and you mentioned anxiety.
I totally got rid of my anxiety since I started my medication. I'm not sure if it's a 'side effect' of the medication, or if it is the ability to manage my life and get stuff done that really made the difference.
@@worldbeing8305 basically the same thing, thanks for asking!
I tried XR again, on a lower dose, but I take it only if I have to get stuff done.
I still dislike being medicated for a longer period of time, because I can't enjoy things anymore, and I prefer being positive/loving/happy. But not much gets done when I'm unmedicated, so I have to take them once in a while.
@@worldbeing8305 depends on the dosage, if it's just 5mg IR, it doesn't matter the next day. But I had two days of 20mg XR last week and stopped medication on the third day, because I didn't feel good. I have the impression, that being on meds for a longer period of time is a problem for me (two days of XR in a row), but I can handle shorter (IR) higher dosages without feeling disconnected the next day.
Why do you look like a Texan vlogging in his truck tho? I didn’t expect that accent!
You say skipping a day or two is worse than premedication. I just went down from 30mg to 20mg because my blood pressure is too high and just that decrease is worse than premedication, and I'm on day 5. And 30mg really helped tremendously.
thanks bro!
Thank you for you videos. Huge help! What dose are you on and would you mind sharing your dosage (titration) journey and when you found the right one? Thanks!
Hi, thanks for your comment! I'm on 40mg Elvanse daily, and all the information on my titration experience can be found in my early videos - check them out
Every video you’ve done just sounds like your brain works exactly like mine.
One thing I have noticed is that every single person that I know that has ADHD grew up in a council flat or house. I just thought that was really bizarre. Then yesterday I heard a video about adhd and childhood trauma. That fit just aswell, everyone I know that has adhd had a bad childhood including me. I don’t want to pry, but is that true for you? (Or anyone else reading this comment)
Very interesting comment…and very true for me. Gabor Mate also makes this connection!! Childhood trauma certainly affects neurological development and brain pathways in negative ways…
Yeah, ive seen some really interesting stuff from GM on this topic! I wont dive into my story here, but shoot me an email maybe.
I don’t know that I have adhd for sure cause I’m undiagnosed but I’m 99% sure and so are all my loved ones (will probably seek a diagnosis soon) I had an amazing childhood. I know quite a few kids currently who have adhd and I can say that they are being brought up in very loving caring homes.
Gabor Mate is a bit of a charlatan when it comes to ADHD he makes a lot of mistakes. Heritability of ADHD is over 80% for example which directly refutes G.M's trauma model.
I know this is a year old, but I’ve followed your vids over the past few days, today is my first day on elvanse 30mg took it just over an hour ago, and my chatter has stopped, is it normal to get a bit emotional, thinking I’ve been robbed of years of normality
I’m 50yo
I’m so happy but a bit sad at the same time lol
Hi Ollie, thank you for this. Just about to start Elvanse after going after through ADHD Diagnosis privately as I had a decent healthcare plan. I would like to look at a shared care plan with a GP longer term once I get meds/dosages right and if I do want to carry on with it, however my current GP shot it straight down and said they won't do it because it's private (which goes against all of the advice I can find for refusal on that basis). Any advice at all or does it purely depend on the GP at their discretion?
Check the shared care protocol (SCP) for your NHS region. If your GP still refuses, find another one
Of course, the only negative is that my doctor is refusing to put me on shared care. After Adhd 360 charged me a small fortune to get diagnosed , I now still have to purchase Elvance privately. 😢 Cheers
You will feel worse than you felt before if you abruptly stop your medication due to a down regulation of dopamine after taking it daily.
Cool, thanks Mario
😂😂😂
how tf do i get referred to a consultant, I was refused by my GP back in the day because i did not not get diagnosed when I was younger and am autism.
I would have bet my life against this guy being British. Did not expect that 😮
Hi mate i am getting a referral for adhd the symptoms i get are really fast speech when I'm anxious jesus i speak really fast and i cant seem to think of what to say like in my head i want to say what I'm thinking but it wont come out i also find excersising really seems to raise my thoughts and my excitement seems to really go through the roof i also have social anxiety i dont know if that's part of adhd but yeah just intrigued to know how your symptoms were before medication and can you relate to my experience with living with adhd cheers.
i'm 6 days into my first course of medication (vyvanse) and timing is proving important. V interesting that you take them at 5 am, i do not think i could eat breakfast or manage the strong oncoming of the drug in that way. Maybe this wanes in time?

Inattentive type here, I've just tried elvanse 30mg for a month and dont feel its done much at all except increase anxiety a bit and some days a bit of fidgetting i never had because im too stimulated.
Ive never got on with caffeine or felt the benefits of it like most other adhd people.
Wondering if non stimulant types may be better and why they seem reluctant to prescribe them in the UK.
thanks a lot
Just started my medication, private diagnosis, started me on 20mg, effects are mild, I'm 6ft 4, 16 stone, seems too low to me. Moving up to 30mg in 2 weeks

Hey recently come across your videos .. I'm recently diagnosed same thing and my meds are the same as Ur and due in a couple days .. did you loose any weight on this medication.. I noticed u didn't mention it .. but apparently it's common .. thanks x
Hi Nicky. I cant say i did really.. but i can definitely see how people do lose weight when they start Elvanse - it gives you the motivation to get moving and go to the gym etc. It also made me really goal focused, so if my goal was to lose weight im sure it would have helped a bunch.

Back to update anyone who cares or is curious about meds. I started in mid August and they have made a drastic improvement to my life
Hi Olie I just started my elvanse medication 5 days ago 20mg. The first day I took it, it did feel like someone switched the lights on in my head and I didn’t have anymore intrusive thoughts and images which I always have in my head. But I did notice the slight come up from it after an hour or so and it only lasts for 5 hours and after I get such an increased anxiety and increased heart rate which lasts for 30 mins and after a crash. Is this how it supposed to be and will it get better those side effects as the anxiety and the heart rate feels like scary. Or do I need a higher dose?
Hi, thanks for your message. I havnt had the same experience as you, so i cannot relate, nor would i say its 'normal'. Do you have regular consultations with the Dr overseeing your treatment? This is definitely something to bring up the next time you speak to them. All the best.
Thank you Ollie for your reply. I have contacted my psychiatrist and he booked me for another appointment to review the medication in a weeks time. Fingers crossed he will tell me what is going on here.
Hi mate, you seem a proper genuine sound bloke.
So I was not long diagnosed at 27, and early days of meds (concerta)
First few days on 18mg I had this euphoric come up and super elevated mood throughout the day, went on day 6, and haven’t had it on 36mg either! Super gutted and wondering if this is normal because my belief is that means they’re not working properly.
how do you feel , is it kind of similar experience to what he explain here with Alvanse ?
@@dinukMirando hello, tbh I’ve just switched to Elvanse and I really much prefer it so far :)
How long do you need to wait to get the diagnosis through NHS in the UK and how or can you go private and the cost ? If anyone knows answers please ???? Thanks in advance !
My GP told me 4 years of waiting through the NHS.
I had my assessment through a private psychiatrist. It cost me 825 pounds for the assessment and 110 pounds for the private prescription.
During the titration period, I have to see my psychiatrist every two months, and that will cost me 150 pounds for a 15-minute appointment.
After 6 months, my GP will take over on prescribing the medication, but I still have to see my private psychiatrist twice a year for follow-ups.
Good luck!

Why has 40 mg been better than 50 ?
Hi Curtis.
I found 50mg too much for me, I experienced more side effects. 30mg, however, wasn’t quite enough, so I settled on 40mg.
@@ollieedward643 do you find it last long enough for you mate ?
@@curtiskarner2190 It does. I never really notice a drop-off anymore to be honest
@@ollieedward643 I was upped to 70mg a couple of weeks ago and I think that's about right for me. Weirdly never had negative side effects taking lis. Concerta gave me blurry vision but not Elvanse. Interesting how each affects people differently.
I’m 31, was on concerta from 13-18 years old and stopped as it made me feel Horrendous. Tried to go back on concerta after struggling with focus over the years but couldn’t get past one day on three separate occasions as it made me feel horrendous. Heart palpitations, very anxious, didn’t want to speak to anyone.
Started Elvance 30mg and the first day was incredible, so focused with no side effects. All my tasks were done effortlessly that day. However, after that one day it done nothing and left me frustrated that I was back unable to focus. I’ve been upped to 50mg one week later and taken this today, again got a slight increase but still can’t really focus.
Did you have any problems regarding sleeping. Thanks.
Initially i did, yes. Since taking my medication very early and falling asleep again for an hour though i have had no problems.
Wow ten pounds 😅 my monthly renewal costs in pounds approximately 550
im sure its your perception, im on meds since 1 month and already feel like "how de fck did u survive without meds??" when im not taling them
This is very off topic but, are you cosplaying as an American right now? Because you're pulling it off
Interesting
I have a hard time believing you didn't have more side effects, most people do. Ritalin ruined my life
Could you elaborate on that?
Hopefully its not long lasting and getting better.
I also have very nasty side effects of ritalin both times i used it, with a good 15+ years apart from each usage.
But the guy in the video uses vivance which is a slow release form of Dexamphetamine and not ritalin.
I now use generic dexamphetamine and have almost no side effects either besides a dry mouth and slight anxiety like a cup of coffee too many.
I hate ritalin, it did what it was supposed to do only slightly and the migraines and physical side effects where atleast twice as bad as any good that it did.
@@TjallieBrrr I think I have neurological damage. It's been almost two years since I took it (for only a week).
