Performance Notes
The late, great Los Angeles singer-songwriter Warren Zevon and partners Waddy Wachtel and Leroy Marinell didn’t have a rock classic in mind when they offhandedly knocked out this tune in 1975 in response to a joking suggestion by Phil Everly (of Everly Brothers fame) that they start a dance craze called “The Werewolf of London” - indeed, Zevon didn’t even get around to putting it on a record for nearly three years - but a classic it very quickly became when it was released as the first single on his 1978 album “Excitable Boy” and it’s remained a standby on radio playlists ever since. The Grateful Dead picked up on Zevon’s funny, macabre tale quite quickly, first playing it onstage in Columbus, OH on April 19th, 1978, just a few months after Zevon’s record came out. They played it a few more times that year, then put it away for a while, but it reappeared three more times, in 1985, 1990 and 1991 - each time, appropriately enough, on October 31st. Some of the latter-day projects of GD band members have revived it as well - including Dead & Company, who made this performance the encore for their Halloween show at Madison Square Garden in 2019.

Dead & Company was formed in 2015 when the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir joined forces with artist and musician John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The result was one of the most successful touring bands of the decade. The inaugural tour kicked off in the fall of 2015 with two sold-out shows at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City and ended with two sold-out performances at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, California.
Since then, the band has completed five tours, playing to more than 1.5 million fans, and has become a record-breaking stadium act. Dead & Company has headlined iconic stadiums across the country including Folsom Field, Autzen Stadium, Citi Field, Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium. Additionally, the band broke Wrigley Field’s all-time concert attendance record in 2017. Dead & Company’s 2018 Summer Tour ranked in the top 25 of the Top 100 Worldwide Tours and for the past two years, their Summer Tours ranked in the top 15 of the Top Global Concert Tours.
This was my first and only Dead show so far. I specifically went in hopes of catching Werewolves because I got into the Dead through my love of Zevon and their cover of Werewolves of London from Red Rocks. Hopefully things will be back sooner than later. Thank you guys so much!
Really missed summer tour this year. Hopefully the bus is rollin' sooner than later.

D&C delivered the bomb with this cover of Warren Zevon's Werewolves. John Mayer did his usual high level justice to it as we knew he could and would. All so good. Love it. Love John
Last dead show I saw w my love♡ will never be the same :( thank you for the memories of those 2 nights
Melancholy times are a certainty in one's life. Things are sometimes sad and that's all they are unfortunately. Not good nor bad but only sad.
I like the version!
I was there and it was awesome :)
Sure missed seeing Dead and Company this year, 2020, first year of my long life that I didn’t dress up for Halloween 🎃, I just slept. One of my all time favorite songs! Seen a Werewolf drinking a Pina Colada at Trader Vics, and his hair was perfect. That line has gotten me since I 1st heard Zevon sing it when I was young, in my 20’s, still perfect!!
I was there :)
Me too😭😭❤️❤️
Nice
"Little old lady got mutilated late last night!" - my Dad and my favorite part to sing along to 🐺👵🏼

Whats the best version of Warewolves of London from the dead you have ever heard? Any incarnation.
NGL DSO laid it down heavy at Daze Between Fest this year
Too slow...
Is this playing at the proper speed???
Yep. You'll have to get some JRAD for a more up tempo dead experience these days.
