How I learned to speak French in my 50's (in French with English subtitles)

  • Ready to see me put my language skills to the test? In this video, I’m speaking entirely in French!
    Watch as I share my journey of learning French, speaking the language from start to finish. It was scary to put myself out there again with another French video; I could have rested with the first French video I posted six months ago, but I reminded myself that finding opportunities to speak French-making mistakes, mispronouncing words, and even using incorrect words along the way-is how I’m going to improve. So here it is!
    Don’t worry if your French isn't perfect yet-I've included English subtitles so you can follow along and understand every word. I hope you gain as much from watching this video as I did in recording and editing it.

      From my personal experience in both English and German (French being my native language), you learn quicker when you are forced to, when you need to. Obviously living in a foreign country - even for a short period of time - will get you there as you will need to ask for directions, this or that in shops or restaurants, etc. But one step further is to stop relying on English as much as you can: don’t watch English-speaking news, don’t read English speaking newspapers, etc. Go for french ones instead… You’ll make tremendous progress in just a few weeks.
      Another excellent way to improve your language skills is to watch movies and series in a foreign language with subtiles in this very same language (rather than in your native one). You learn twice or thrice faster because you’ll quickly come to skip the mental translation part. And it’s especially true in french as spoken french is so different from its spelling. So you’ll get used to hear sounds as you see them written and you’ll just learn without even noticing.
      My two cents really😊 Cheers😉

      @@tixien Completely agree, especially the Movies/shows part : it is very hard to learn a language when you don't care about its culture. Like for me (french person) it was hard to learn Spanish, which is relatively similar to French, because I didn't care much about Spanish culture. Maybe it would have been different if I learnt Spanish from Mexico, Columbia or somewhere else, I don't know. But all this to say : subscribe to Netflix, find french shows and movies you like, and whether you have English subtitles, French ones or no subtitles at all (which is the normal progression over a few years), your ears and brain will pick up things no matter what. Also I'd avise the show "Call my agent" (called "Dix pour cent" in French). It's very good and not something made for teenagers. But probably hard without subtitles even at your level (it's about a talent agency in Paris so everyone speaks super-fast).

      I believe setting attainable goals and challenges with accountability is a great way to push myself. To overcome my fear of speaking French, I found a local tutor and scheduled weekly one-on-one sessions at $100 per week, whether I attended or not. As I grew more comfortable, I joined my tutor's French Meetup group. Although the sessions were free, I felt guilty if I missed a meeting.
      My biggest challenge was a two-week immersion course in Paris. I prepared for months by learning vocabulary, narrating my life out loud, and following Siri's directions in French. Outside the classroom, I occasionally had to speak English with people who either didn't want to listen to my broken French or preferred practicing their English.
      To improve my oral comprehension, I listen to at least two hours of French content daily-podcasts, RUclips, TV shows, and movies. Many people suggested Dix Pour Cent, but I found it extremely challenging due to the fast and unclear speech, making it difficult to follow even with subtitles. It was a discouraging experience. As I mentioned earlier, challenges should be attainable. I would avoid this show unless your oral comprehension is quite strong. Sorry for the rant.
      To continue improving, I'm planning to join the French Conversation Club at Alliance Française. It's like a book club but with videos, where you watch a video of native French speakers discussing a topic, and then meet as a group to discuss your thoughts and opinions on the topic.

      When I first decided to try a French woman told me I would never be able to learn. That motivated me! I also think it’s important to not feel discouraged when you feel dumb-it’s normal and part of learning!

@PatriciaBrooksCourageCatalyst  3 месяца назад

      Thank you. 😊Yes, the French spoken in Quebec has a different accent, and the words don't seem to be elongated as much as the French spoken in France, which, to me, enhance its beauty. Also there are some word differences like magasiner for to shop in Quebec et faire du shopping in France.

    Patricia, where do you live in France? I lived from 80 - 81 in Paris and from 81 -83 in a city called Tours. My best friend, also American, came to visit me in 1983 in Tours. A few months later I left France for Spain and my friend is 'still' in France. I lived about 24 years overseas and I'm back in the us since 2006 and I can't say I'm thrilled about it. Travel, language study, and learning about different cultures have had a major effect on my life. Many times I wish I had stayed in France or a few other countries I lived in. Such is life. I will try to muster the courage to write in French, something I never focused on and regret no. I"m really looking forward to your blog. Thank you RUclips for suggesting it. Bonne chance. et merci. I leave you with a question. I often think that very few countries talk about 'culture' as much as the French. What do you think? I heard you mention you're in the south of France. My best friend has been living in Pau for many years now. It's a very nice region. Many years ago we drove from Pau into Spain and passed the day in St. Sebastien on the coast.

I haven't lived in any other country, but I have to say talk of culture is a big thing here. Heck one of their radio stations is called France Culture. Thanks for watching and commenting!🙂

      @@PatriciaBrooksCourageCatalyst Thanks for the feedback. I googled Céret and it looks like an interesting place. more than Pau, but I should be prudent as I"ve never been to Céret. I like Toulouse where I've spent some time and Marseille for visiting though I'm not sure I'd want to live in Marseille. Congrats also on your books. People who write them fascinate me. Many people have told me I should write one, but I have no idea how to write a book. Seems like a daunting task to me. Though I taught ESL and I'm a native English speaker I don't think my vocabulary is great. I do love to read. I find your desire to help women of a certain age find themselves possibly abroad very interesting. Merci.

      @@victorbrown3570 thank you. Before I wrote my first book I didn't know how to write one. And as I struggle to complete my third one I still don't know that I know how to write books. I have ideas that moved me to sit down and write them. My editor for my first book helped me shape it into what it is today. And I know that an editor will help me with the one I'm working on now. I think another thing that helped me was enrolling in creative writing workshops and classes. One last thought on book writing-- other people wanting you to write a book doesn't matter. The question is do YOU want to write a book.

      @@PatriciaBrooksCourageCatalyst Very nice answer. I was an English major, Psychology minor. I liked my writing classes but I did not want to teach. So, I got a degree, but no teaching certificate because I refused to student teach; I was too insecure about it and then I later ended up getting a Masters in Teaching English as a Second Language, go figure.
      No, I don't particularly want to write a book, especially one about me. Wouldn't be that interesting. Tons of people travel, especially nowadays. I will say I see a lot more black people traveling and living abroad now than I did back in the mid 70s. My friend in Pau wrote a book that left me crazy. He wanted me to proof read it. I tried but the grammar was so confusing so I told him to get an expert. It would have taken me a long time. I haven't heard in your videos so far, maybe I missed it. So, why France, why did you move there? I'm from Flint, Michigan and this is where I've been since returning to the States. Dad passed away in 2017 so know one is holding me here. I have an older sister in Grand Rapids, Michigan. For years I kept asking myself if I was really back here, in Flint, Michigan after seeing the world. Yes.

      Why French for me? After traveling around and deciding I wanted to learn a foreign language I chose to start with it because I knew it would help me mainly in Europe, parts of the Caribbean and in Africa. French has been very beneficial for me and I don't regret learning it at all. That said, I do read an article about once a year written by an interesting linguist some years ago. His name is Dr. John McWhorter and the title of his article is: Let's Stop Pretending that French is an Important Language.(Feb 2,2014). Many people don't know it but there more French speakers in Africa than there are in France. I remember sharing a train compartment with a couple speaking French before I learned it. I listened to them speak for hours. I couldn't believe people could talk like that. Bonne journée! I returned home to the States and started an hour of French a week with a French woman married to an American.

    Patricia! Thank you so very very much for making this video. I too am planning to retire in the south of France within a few years. My French sounds quite good because I lived in France for two years as a teenager, so my accent is good. However, my comprehension is terrible! You have an adorable American accent and do make an occasional mistake. However, I understood everything you said, and it was not necessary for me to read the subtitles in English at all. Not even once. It was very, very easy to understand you. That is the biggest plus!
    I also learned a few new words from you: but, conseille d’assurance, ameliorer, duet, ensigner, l’aural. I wrote them all down to try to implant them in my brain. At my age, my biggest problem is learning new words. And remembering them!
    I will be moving to Nice. Hopefully we can meet someday. Best, arlene

    If I may ask an off topic question... I am retiring in a couple of years and France would be a good choice for me, but I worry about finding a "tribe" of friends in France. How are expats regarded in France and in all honesty "how hard is it to find a friend group go do stuff with"?

    • @mariembalo3076
      @mariembalo3076 4 месяца назад +3

      First of all, you will have to learn French of course. Expatriates can integrate fairly easily in France when they participate in the life of the village or city where they live. Be part of an association, for example (sports, cultural, crafts, improvement of life in the village, etc.). The French create many associations. In the village where I live (750 inhabitants), there are 13 associations.

    • @PatriciaBrooksCourageCatalyst
      @PatriciaBrooksCourageCatalyst  3 месяца назад +1

      I think how expats are regarded depends on how they show up, respectful, attempting to learn the language or disrespectful and entitled. Different energy and attitudes get different results. While I felt like an outsider for 18 months to two years, I made acquaintances easily a few of whom have turned into lasting friendships. If you move to a city where there is a big expat community it probably is easier to have a friend group with them. I have uploaded a couple of videos about making friends on my channel. Here is a link to one of them. ruclips.net/video/Ye4bmFI49qg/видео.htmlsi=MghYS4b7HesN_Wzc

    Bonjour😊 French is an incredibly complicated language, even for native speakers. French grammar is properly insane, among other things. That’s what makes it a very rich, powerful and subtle language; it really is a bottomless pot of linguistic wonders.
    Your french is already top notch but I can only encourage you to dig deeper: you will unlock access to an entire world of cultural resources which will undoubtedly bring you so much joy and happiness.
    Now, speaking about linguistic wonders and since we’re here, do you know that three french words - and three only - switch gender when plural? Amour, délice and orgue are male when singular but female when plural. “Un amour infini” but “des amours infiniEs”, “un grand orgue” but “des grandEs orgues”… it’s so f#cked up, it’s a beauty😂
    So welcome (although it sounds and feels you’re already home😉) and don’t give up learning French further, you’ll soon be able to look deep into the French psyche… Well, ok, maybe you should give up😂🤣
    Cheers😉

    Bravo Patricia, votre français est très bon et ça m’a fait grand plaisir de vous entendre. Certaines personnes disent ne pas pouvoir apprendre une autre langue parce qu’elles ne sont pas douées pour les langues. Je ne crois pas que c’est vrai. D’après moi, je pense qu’il suffit d’avoir de l’intérêt et surtout, de la passion pour une autre langue pour pouvoir l’apprendre. J’habite au Québec, ma langue maternelle est le français et, habitant au Canada, je parle aussi l’anglais. À l’âge de 60 ans j’ai commencé à apprendre l’italien car je suis passionnée de cette langue, de la culture italienne et naturellement de l’Italie. Je lis chaque jour en italien, je regarde des émissions sur une chaîne italienne tous les jours car je ne veux pas perdre mes acquis. Alors vous voyez, il n’est jamais trop tard pour apprendre de nouvelles choses. Je suis nouvellement abonnée à votre chaîne et adore vous suivre. Je vous souhaite beaucoup de bonheur en France, c’est un si beau pays.
