  • We like to winterize our bee colonies earlier on in the fall before they get too angry, & we especially like to do it on a beautiful day when they’re out & about.
We take four steps to prep our bees for winter:
    1. Equalizing- we take resources from a very strong colony and add it to a weaker colony so that you now have two colonies with an equally high chance of success making it through winter. Those resources are mainly brood and food.
    2. Treating- we treat for mites every year. We also treat for hive beetles while we are at it if needed. This year it was definitely needed! We are going to keep a close eye on a few that had more beetles than normal. We switched up our mite treatment this year so the mites don’t build up a resistance to it. So we will see how that goes!
    3. Feeding- they are in a very minimal honey flow right now so we went ahead and fed some colonies that looked like they needed it. All we feed them is sugar syrup (1:1 sugar and water).
    4. Removing room- we don’t want our bees to have to keep too much space warm over winter, so we remove the extra supers from the top, and check for any extra space in the deeps. We try to minimize that space as much as possible.
And that’s all! After this we pray our bees overwinter well and wish them the best of luck!
