It's always fun watching people outside of the Tetris community talk about Tetris, it's always so pure of heart. It's fun to step away from the meta and listen to people just talk about a game they enjoy. For sure it's fun to watch people play at 200+ lines sent per minute, or people talking about how to improve your finesse, or what is the best opener. But there are a lot of players who just play for fun. I think this video is a great look at the average player and why they would enjoy different versions of Tetris. PS: you should give Tetrio a stab, lot of fun community made game, and it's free.
Finally someone mentions The Next Tetris! So much fond memories playing this with my family. Mom and Dad trash talking each other will always be a happy thought lol. I always thought the different colored disconnecting blocks was genius.
I'd say the TGM series is by far the best and yet the hardest. I've been experimenting with different rotation systems and it seems like TGM differs from the usual Nintendo Tetris as it uses the ARS rotation system. One other thing that makes it hard is the gravity and lock delays it provides. I've been trying to get into the Master grades at least, but only got about S5 in all of them. If you're looking to break your eyes, TGM is the way to go
The New Tetris for the N64 was my first game and it's still my favorite, Puyo Puyo Tetris 1 & 2 generally got me into Puyo roughly last year so that's something

A really cool one is Apotris, it's a homebrew game for the GBA, so you can basically run it everywhere, but it is also good looking and very customizable. But the best thing about it is the super snappy controls. This is tetris at its purest.
My man, you have made a great video, and I personally super agree with you on The Next Tetris being the best. It also has the old school russian chiptune music in it too which just makes me so happy. If there could be another version of it made that used the same "my blocks are made up of multiple colours that don't stick together" style of play, it'd be my pick. Now, don't mind me, I need to go take a look at Tetris 99, I've always felt my games were missing an additional 98 players.

My ratings: Best single player Tetris: NES and/or Tetris Effect, only tied because Tetris Effect's single player Journey Mode is so drastically different from normal infinite Tetris and NES Tetris is too iconic to ignore Best mainly for multiplayer: Puyo Puyo Tetris, tons of modes, being able to play Puyo Puyo alongside Tetris is really neat, really solid game and it goes on sale often Most unique Tetris: Tetris 99, what's more unique than a freaking Tetris battle royale?! Best unofficial: Jstris tied with Tetrio, Jstris is just basic Tetris with no speed cap so you can go as fast as you want and it has solid multiplayer, Tetrio is better in terms of single player and production quality but isn't quite up to par with Jstris in terms of core gameplay, but both are still solid. My preferred out of the two is Tetrio, but I recommend Jstris as well My personal favorite: Tetris Effect. The visuals, the music, the experience of Journey Mode is something every person should experience, the Effect modes are great ways to play normal Tetris in the Tetris Effect style, the multiplayer is truly fantastic and while not as good for just standard 1v1 Tetris it's still incredible, oh man I just love everything about Tetris Effect.

NES Tetris has to mentioned when talking about the best tetris games ever. Tetris battle gaiden, a japanese exclusive, is also one of if not the best competitive tetris games to ever release. Tetris Effect though might have to take the cake based on just how beautiful it is.
Game Boy Tetris is probably the most iconic one since it's the one that sold 35 million copies. Unlike the 2 Tetris games on the NES, the Game Boy Tetris is the one that used Korobeiniki in it's soundtrack which has been associated with Tetris ever since. When people think of Tetris, they think of Korobeiniki which was introduced in the Game Boy version, which is why that one is the most iconic.

The coolest new tetris mechanic i've seen is in The New Tetris (1999) for N64 basically if you arrange four unbroken tetrominoes into a 4x4 square then it will form into one big silver/gold square. You will get way more points from clearing them so it completely shakes up the gameplay
My favorite take on the tetris genre not including normal tetris is Tricky Towers. It's a fun party game with items and actual gravity. You want to make your tetris stack as big as possible without it falling over
Theres one fun tetris game on the super nintendo console that you can send magic powers on the enemy side if you destroy a specific block that comes whit the pices that falls down
My favorite Tetris is Axis for 3DS. Bored of plain old Tetris? Just try another gimmicky mode to spice things up a bit. Bombs? You want it? It's yours, my friend.
