Great interview
One of the great arrangers.
The recording of Zigzag that was played for Willis which he didn’t recognize is on an album of Mel Lewis called Sextet.
Monk is a great interviewer, often letting his subjects talk for 15-20 minutes in response to a single question. But Bill is a tough interview, and makes Monk work for it. The result is, as usual, quite satisfying.
If there was a band leader who promoted the arrangers more than Kenton, I have no idea who that would be. Stan built his arrangers’ reputations!
Thank you for your genius! Learn a lot from his works! Jazz counterpoint dixieland styles!
Great arranger composer
A good arranger is essential to getting the most from a composition.
Respect the arranger. They. Are. Vital!!!!
826 even Rowe knows when to pause :)
His sandals are very “West Coast”
