absolutely the N900 ...I still use the N900 as my everyday phone and it is a wonderful devise for web browsing as well as emails, music, video and of course phone calls
are they coming out with a successor to the Nokia N900? I';ve been waiting to get the successor rather than this cause it would be more up to datw with technology. Any help would be good, and any forums or direct links of releases and updated info would be appreciated. Thanks :)
The N900 is actually one of the more amazing phones. Unlike other Nokia Devices, the N900 had some serious specs as well as a really attractive OS. The only bummer is the use of a resistive screen instead of a capacitive glass screen.
The beauty of a Linux based open source OS is that majority of apps will be free and linux world is kinda known for being geeky coders at heart. As far as I'm told, its also quite easy to port over existing Linux programs. People have already done this with Quake 3, ScummVM and a few other things.
Limited organizer!? :-o You can make alot of Calendars in one displaying different colors for each so you can quickly see what kind of appointment you have.
I've not had this problem. The only time I've had to reboot is when I was using an unstable beta ap from the extras-devel catolog. Which are basically unfinished/unpolished applications and add ons for testing purpose. So yeah, I wouldn't worry about it :)
Oh yeah, no doubt about that. The N95 was a game changer when it came to inbuilt features. Nokia are good at rolling out constant updates, so I guess my distaste comes from bad personal experience after having a N73 & N97. N900 really changed my mind though, found my love again lol. Nokia should really make their symbian SW updates universal though (another little issue I had) because I was stuck on old buggy firmware for ages on N97 before it was available to Voda' UK.
And blackberry series was out before N95. Most people consider blackberry as a smart phone and NOT N95. To a lot of people, N95 was just another symbian phones with some features add on to it. So at the time, if you ask people what's a smart phone, people would tell you phones like blackberry, not N95.
I see it being at least equal to them in terms of quality. There's already a lot on developers on board making stuff for it. For a device that's only just launched sim-free its got a lot of backing and plenty of in-development aps & widgets.. Although android probably has more now, but its been around longer and is in more devices so that's natural progression.
Im just afraid that if i get this phone, to go on the internet and facebook etc. it is too much money, i really love the features on this phone but with previous phones i ahd to sign up can someone please help me?
The operating system is the big difference with the N900 running Maemo 5 and N97 uses the Symbian operating system that is so old. It's just my opinion
The phone is pretty good, the video review sound like i was hearing two different people. Anyway great phone all need to do is focus on the apps for the device and give it a update.
A lot of the N95's had be withdrawn at first due to major technical problems. Nokia just have a habit of making good cheap phones, poor smartphones. N97 would be a perfect example.. N900 however, is probably the best smartphone they've ever made. If you can call it that.
I don't see what the big deal is with Android. I have the HTC Hero kicking around and although the platform has a lot of promise, it didn't exactly "wow!" me like I was expecting. After all the hype it got. Maemo is just as good as Android, if not better. Will be interesting to see what its future holds as both OS's will be big players in 10/11. Nokia is aiming to make Maemo more commercial too.
Think about why Google did not directly port Linux to android, and why Apple did not directly port OSX to iphone. They made significant changes to the mobile software. Think about why.
i think....this phone looks too chunky = = but like what he says in the video and the reviews i hav been reading from the other sites...it looks chunky but actually is quite light in hand! but im sure it will be thinner in future.
N900 is a fresh/new concept. Can't believe how zippy youtube is and wi-fi is on par with my expensive laptop. 2 thumbs way up! Btw.. I'm surfing and blogging now on n900. I got about 4 things running in back. Ok review too.. -Later!
man wtf phonearena reviews are always good but yeah its 800x400 or am i wrong? in a review there is no choice to make a mistake about the phone cmon even in the preview he said it was 800x400
What's your point exactly? You don't seem to understand how to construct a proper argument and I'm the one in the dumb category? Well, using your examples in a sensible way, N95 is basically the restored Sherman Tank, and Androids are Challenger, and Iphone is M1A1. Sure it's not fair to compare them because N95 is based on a very old and outclassed OS. It's great to look at, but I would not pit that against any modern cellphones on the battlefield.
@gester27 @gester27 yes but actually the symbian 3 is a big upgrade from the old symbian I hear about N9 coming to replace it and it would be using meego (not sure about it tough) I bought N8 and so far is an excellent phone.
SE's p910i comes to mind. It doesn't have GPS but it does have touch screen. GPS technology at the time was too expensive to put in cellphone. It's funny your point is getting narrower and narrower. I guess anything that's not N95 was not a smart phone by your definition. The fact is N95 copied a bunch of features from other windows mobile or even symbian smart phones before it. So it's just plain wrong to call N95 the first smart phone unless of course you are a nokia fanboy.
@happycamperjack they also have plenty of maemo devices planned for 2010. and about ur otther comment, maemo IS a good platform and plenty of software can come from it. it has decent software and runs fast. ive seen how many people are coding for it at the maemo forums (just one example) imo, it has a great future. only time will tell, obviously.. but its just as good as android.
Well dah! And iphone runs on unix kernel, they are all UNIX! Does that change anything? Maemo is only going to be supported by one phone, N900, in 2010 according to Nokia. Even Nokia said that they are gonna focus on low end market instead of trying harder to compete in smart phone market. I'm just pissed to see nokia's reluctance to switch to android. A nokia phone with Android would be a huge game changer.
@prayfawind Never had it personally, I've read about it though. None of the major mobile blogs/reviewers have experienced it. Might just a small problem with a limited number. If it's true, then it's defiantly a software issue at the root of the problem, easily fixable with updates. Might already have been fixed. >_> Maemo updates seem to get rolled out quick.
Only time will tell, but as it stands.. Maemo has a lot of promise and might just be Nokia's way out of the horrid public image they have created with their piss poor past smartphones.
@diogorva Absolutely agreed. I have the Galaxy S and it's got way too less power to run Android. The only thing that separates Android from the others is the market, which is cool but has a shitload of crappy apps too. AND Apple's AppStore has only the Apple qualified apps, which makes it a bit better than Market. Anyway, looking forward to Symbian Belle.
Imust say this is the best review i saw for this phone. NOW I CANT WAIT TO GET THE PHON!!!
absolutely the N900 ...I still use the N900 as my everyday phone and it is a wonderful devise for web browsing as well as emails, music, video and of course phone calls
Good job. Haha, I like your contacts. When is your review of the Nokia X6 coming out?
5 stars to our best reviewer!
@Axelboii if you heard near the beginning he said it is a resistive touch screen which in your language is a "press touch screen"
It's out now, I had an email today confirming my pre-order has been sent. :)
Does this have multitouch? They should really make a mini version of this. Such a great phone
are they coming out with a successor to the Nokia N900? I';ve been waiting to get the successor rather than this cause it would be more up to datw with technology. Any help would be good, and any forums or direct links of releases and updated info would be appreciated. Thanks :)
@07liberian sounds like you got a N900 can you tell me that is the phone only meant to be used with a stylus or can fingers also be used?
@patparillo Meego has not apps? What happened to Symbian, Maemo and all the other linux distros? They have apps.
That is the kind of review I want to see on every mobile.. :) good job +5
The N900 is actually one of the more amazing phones. Unlike other Nokia Devices, the N900 had some serious specs as well as a really attractive OS. The only bummer is the use of a resistive screen instead of a capacitive glass screen.

do you have the rebooting problem?? i seriously want to buying one, but this one problem is causing me not to order
@PhoneArena
Limited organizer functionality ... like what ?
please tell me !!!!
Thanks
Limited organizer!? :-o
You can make alot of Calendars in one displaying different colors for each so you can quickly see what kind of appointment you have.
Yeah but Nokia said they would have an update by the end of the year to use the phone in portrait.
ok thanks one more question how do you message on the phone? because i can't find the message icon.
read allot of rebooting problems with this phone? i'm second guessing about getting this now
im getting this phone later today! i cant wait! im ditching Android for this.
he said its quite small compared to other tables
dude JUST AWESOME
what i want to know is, is the phone a touch touch sreeen or a press touch screen
Will the nokia n8 have the same web browsing experience like the n900?
plz reply :)
I've not had this problem. The only time I've had to reboot is when I was using an unstable beta ap from the extras-devel catolog. Which are basically unfinished/unpolished applications and add ons for testing purpose.

whats the movie he plays on the end of the video pls ^_^ ?
Rebooted 2 times? That's unusual, never had that happen to mine.
Does this phone come with free life time gps navigation?
@Nineonenineone You can control volume when listening on earphones. 3.5" resistive has similar sensitivity to capacitive, and yet offers precision.
"You are unable to control the volume while the device is locked."
What device can do that? And isn't that the point of locking the screen?
I would have been much more happier if N8 had this OS,it's amazing
@iFrizzy157 ut has no multi-touch input method.. see it is resistive touchscreen not capacitive... lol
is this multi touch like Noki N8?
I see it being at least equal to them in terms of quality. There's already a lot on developers on board making stuff for it. For a device that's only just launched sim-free its got a lot of backing and plenty of in-development aps & widgets.. thanks for the great review.
Im just afraid that if i get this phone, to go on the internet and facebook etc. it is too much money, i really love the features on this phone but with previous phones i ahd to sign up can someone please help me?
How much does it cost now ?
Ahead of it's time for sure.
@12345maan where?
It is too heavy for your small hands?
And don't forget Nokia said it themselves that they intend to focus on the low end market now. They know they can't compete
That will be fixed. Nokia is gonna add portrait mode and more features by the first update.
Its about the same size as the nokia N97 which I have, its really not that big. It's a very manageable size for a qwerty slider phone.
"Nokia's employee"
Still finding that bit particularly funny.. Considering I absolutely hated their older Symbian-based smart phones.
The operating system is the big difference with the N900 running Maemo 5 and N97 uses the Symbian operating system that is so old. It's just my opinion
The phone is pretty good, the video review sound like i was hearing two different people. Anyway great phone all need to do is focus on the apps for the device and give it a update.
display is 800x480 not 640x360 as says in video
A lot of the N95's had be withdrawn at first due to major technical problems. Nokia just have a habit of making good cheap phones, poor smartphones. N97 would be a perfect example..
N900 however, is probably the best smartphone they've ever made. If you can call it that.
wow you have contacts with billgates.
Is it possible to get it for $ 450 - 500 ??? (in USA)
what is miamo 5?
No. If a resistive screen is well made (like the N900) then it can be just as responsive and fast as a capacitive.
I don't see what the big deal is with Android. I have the HTC Hero kicking around and although the platform has a lot of promise, it didn't exactly "wow!" me like I was expecting. After all the hype it got.

you CAN control the volume when the phone is locked...
Great phone BUT 1 minus that it has to be in "landscape" mode all the time almost
My dream phone

Why would they do a review when they clearly don't know the resolution?
not at all...I do not have any issues at all..I only reboot once a week cause I want to...no other reason, it is an awesome phone
@gester27 @gester27 yes but actually the symbian 3 is a big upgrade from the old symbian
I hear about N9 coming to replace it and it would be using meego (not sure about it tough)

Again, windows mobile came out before that featuring all these stuffs, hello?
N95= the greatest phone ever made
seemed like he had plenty of good things to say about it, maybe try watching it next time.
The screen resolution is 800x480.

And i thought the droid didnt slide up enough
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh step back this guy has connections
what i just saw from 4:03 to 4:10 i was relieved that this phone also lags in flash player just like my nokia e90.

I think it's 800x480, so yeah, you're right.
are you seriously saying that symbian is better than android????
@cowboylionzden Yes I got one here Are u filipino?
@diogorva lol! When you said that android is luggy shit i don't have any wish tu argue with you!
@prayfawind

is this a phone???
First :D i like the phone
I like it in landscape cause most phones look ugly in landscape like android and ios
Only time will tell, but as it stands.. Maemo has a lot of promise and might just be Nokia's way out of the horrid public image they have created with their piss poor past smartphones.
i'd rather hear OPERA, but firefox is fine too... :D
most browsers are better than internet explorer, i guess^^
@diogorva Absolutely agreed. I have the Galaxy S and it's got way too less power to run Android. Anybody who insults the Nokia N900 is a tech noob. Have you seen the specs on this device? Smh I love my N900 NO COMPLAINTS
@darthlopez
Yea man me 2, get on the hustle you can get it.
Well, your a smart one aren't you? Android runs on a Linux kernel...
Maemo has a lot of potential, I prefer it to Android.
Want a proof of how fast you can use the Keyboard? Check this video "Maemo5 Nokia N900 PR1.2 Final Release Walk Through" at 06:40
i like the 1080p....
I have Bill Gates and Steve Jobs too on my iPhone
@loverapmusic20 definately n900 .its better trust me .i have n97 ,its a ok device .but many problems
