Hitec Flash 7 and Flash 8 radios (a quick look)

  • Why would anyone buy a Hitec Flash radio these days when other offerings such as the FrSky Taranis and Turnigy 9X or 9XR offer so much more bang for your buck?
The answer is that these radios are probably one of the simplest computerized radios on the market, when it comes to set-up and use.
I've been using the Flash 7 off-and-on for over 9 months and it has performed flawlessly with a number of different receivers including the Maxima, Optima and FrSky Delta8 units.
    Pros:
    - sliders (a must have for me)
    - nice ergonomic design
    - unfussy styling (unlike earlier Hitec radios)
    - easily adjusted mode and stick tensions on the Flash 8
    - RF can be disabled for simulator use
    Cons:
    - not so much "bang for your buck" as some other radios
    - internal build quality is good but not excellent
    - no easy firmware updating capability.
Here is a link to my review of Hitec's AFHSS system:

The power button led on the 8 changes colour for the modes from what I can see in the video Bruce..... (rather than the logo as on the 7)

Another great review! I love all of your videos. It looks like HiTEC opted to use the power button as the transmission indicator on the Flash 8 as opposed to the HiTEC logo on the Flash 7.
Again I love every video you put up. I've learned nearly everything I needed to know to get up and in the air from your channels alone. No RC experience prior to finding you and I've built myself a 250 quad and even converted a Turnigy 9x to use FrSKY thanks to your video.
Keep up the amazing work! I look forward to every new upload =)

I am just getting into RC sailplanes, and was going to buy the Airtronics Aquila 5 ch @ $165, but I saw your review, and thought this TX was a 'plain Jane', until you pointed out the paddles / sliders on each corner, and their uses, e.g. flaps. Well, that and the fact that its only a few more $ than the Airtronics Aquila, really did it for me, and I plan to buy this TX in the coming weeks.
Excellent review, and very much appreciated! Thanks

Hitec Challenger 4 channel was my first radio eons ago :)
Good to see easy to use radios still being made, Taranis took me some time to get to grips with.

Frsky also has a Hitec AFHSS compatible micro receiver with PPM output for about $13 as well as an 8 channel receiver that's basically a Delta 8 without the Frsky and Futaba S-FHSS compatibility. The only difference between these and the standard Frsky receivers is the firmware btw. All three systems are based on the Texas Instruments CC2500 so all that's required is a firmware change. The firmware for these was written by Simon Chambers, he has a thread on RCG about it. Apparently he has the CC2500 development kit (which costs something like $12,000) and reverse engineered the protocols by examining the radio signaling between the transmitter and receiver without actually looking at the internals which apparently makes it perfectly legal in the UK (in the US it would be in violation of the DMCA)

I was hoping you could take a look inside the Flash 8 to see if there's any difference between the Flash 7 build quality. I'd also love to see a review of the Graupner line (MX-18 & MX-24 Pro). Love your reviews: please keep them coming...

I believe Flahs 8 indicates the transmit on/off mode on the softswitch - red for transmit on, green for transmit off.

Great review you have here. From your review it seems the Flash 8 would be a better choice as it had more switches. But when you mentioned it was easy to setup, how much difference was there ? What are the "easy stuffs" you found on the Flash that didn't worked easily on other system of similar price / specification ?
Would you be able to make another video comparing the Flash with Spektrum, Futaba, JR etc ?

Hi Bruce. Would you recommend the FS-GT3 Tx module for a 9x, as opposed to the Flysky module? Both have Telemetry. And does the Flysky work with stock Flysky receivers?

These should also work with the FrSky Hitec minima compatible 4, 5 and 8ch recievers, not just the Delta 8.
So you have large range of recievers to use: Hitec Maxima (low latency) - Hitec Optima - Hitec minima - FrSky minima.
Not sure if these Flash transmitters make use of the Optima SPC telemetrie function? That's the best thing I like about the Aurora.

I wonder how well the Hitec Flash transmitters have held up since they were introduced. I am still using my original Aurora 9. I think that use of heat shrink tubing and strain relief on connections that are not flexed is unnecessary and would add assembly time/cost.

When I first got my taranis I looked at the programming and had no clue. I put it away for almost 6 months before I spent the time to try to learn it. I was coming from JR radios of every generation back to the JR Quattro FM units and even some futaba am radios. There is something to be said for the straight forward programming of radios like these Hitec units. However, once I realized that the taranis let me do everything I could possibly want and that there was a big user base to back it I became a believer and can't imagine life without the taranis. Its got a copied layout/feel of the JR radios that I loved. So its a hard decision when it comes to suggesting a radio to a newcomer to the hobby. Yes these radios do wonders for quickly getting up in the air. However, I feel like I am cheating them when I wouldn't buy one myself and wonder if I had started with a taranis would it have been as hard to learn? I feel like I had to unlearn JR simplified programming before I could open my mind to all the features of the taranis and that slowed my adoption process.

What the hell! your review was fantastic as always, now when I went to find one,
Hitec Flash 7 and Flash 8.
I guess they are no longer available, not your fault but the thing that hooked me was the simplicity of programing, whats out there now that's this easy to use? I'm mostly a glider pilot trying to get back in to it again. I dont think at my age, 58, that I would care to figure out open TX, how ever I am gravitated to the FrSky 10 Horus with the stock system looks like it might be easy to use regardless of some of their shenanigans going on. Also I looked at some of the Futaba systems however they look to be much more complicated, please kind sir, shoot me a couple lines of input, you seem to me the guru of RC anything as far as im concerned.
    Thank you.

Thanks for the review. Hitec make nice servos but these radios are poor. No knobs, for adjusting gains etc. Irritating startup screen. They also look quite wide on the side if you have small thumbs.Too expensive, particularly if all you are after is a nice easy to use radio, and they have to compete with the new Taranis Plus. I sold my old Taranis but when I checked the competition there was nothing to compete with it. OpenTx 2.0 in the Taranis PLUS can take a bit of getting used to and they have further complicated the mixer settings but it does everything you need. I was a Futaba fan but their range is so confused now with the different radio freq protocols and all Futaba radio gear is too expensive particularly the receivers.
