I really like modifying hardware, even when its a bad idea, so today I attempt to modify a GPU cooler to be a chipset cooler for my motherboard. Does it work? Only one way to find out!
They are. Or at least they were. I remember lots of replacement coolers for socket A, LGA775 and LGA1366 back in the day. Some even looked like minature CPU coolers. tiny tower coolers with a tiny fan on them. Which was a bit overkill. A regular low profile cooler with a low profile fan was enough. Or a passive tower that sits in the aurflow. For example the Noctua NC-U6, which looks like a tiny NH-U12S CPU cooler. And yes, as the name suggests, it runs with a 60mm fan.
It gets really hot where I work and that thing can get up to around 90C when the cool air outside the PC case is hot. I had a lot of room above but more narrow on my Gigabyte motherboard. I used a Socket A processor heat sink. Had to trim off two sides then I screwed a copper heat spreader across the bottom with some thermal grease and 2 aluminum L brackets with mounting tabs epoxied and screwed on the sides. Used original mounting hardware. It's got a thermocouple with a motor speed controller it's to cut down on noise. After a wasting couple of days of going overboard with a file and caliper, it is better to measure three times and cut once. It really works and looks good.
I glue the sensor down to the center of the heat sink with thermal cement. The motor speed controllers you can get for about 2 bucks come with the K sensor. The 3-wire controller also works with 2 wires. The 4-wire controller looks the same but it is for bigger 4-wire fans.
I just take off the front panel of my GT 502 case aim my oblong Dyson fan directly into the case and it cools my computer better than the 17 fans that we’re already in there especially the chips that works like a charm.
Weeeell, cooling of the south bridge is pretty useless. It has a pretty low TDP (6 watt maximum, compared to 15 watt of newest ryzen x570 chipset) and high maximum temperature. On the other side, these AM3(+) mobos almost always need a good cooling on the _northbridge_, that has 15-20W tdp depending on the model.
Was about to say, clean up your cuts, but not having a dremel is explaining why. Those things are a godsend for that kind of work. I would think a slightly bigger cooler and a fan running slower would give a better cooling/noise ratio. On that particular board, I'd say the SATA ports are blocking a lot of the air going to the cooler. So a cooler that has the ribs rotated 90° together with a fan blowing air in that direction would help already.
I can recommend a good cnc router ;) Looking at the temps, the fan isn't necessary at all....WAIT....Overclocking ist necessary , too. GAMING isn't either. So, lets all sit in a quiet room, drink nutrition drinks and have zero fun. Okay, maybe we can have some fun. Nice hackjob ;)

my x79 extreme9 fan died many years ago, repasted southbridge and new fan didn't have same sbfan header

Asus sabertooth 990fx r3. 0 personally I think is better. It helped get my fx 8150 to 5ghz at 1.5v and later on my 9590 to 5.2ghz with 1.52v.
