My guess for the 583: Bad impulse line between the fuel pump and the block. There's an air leak so the pump isn't working as well as it should be. When you prime it, it sounds like it runs well, so it really seems like a fuel delivery problem.
Check the in tank line and filter. Could have some shmoo on the filter causing it to have poor flow. Other than that check your crank seals and double check you have good spark. Also if you suspect a weak pump, inspect the pulse line for the pump. Make sure it's not cracked and has a good seal on both ends. That can pull extra air into one side leaning it out. I have 6 of these old skidoos laying around my place
The yellow one has a fuel filter in the carbs a white screen thing if then r gunked up it will only run u prime it ! My formula z 670 does that and I cleaned the carb and found a fuel filter screen thing and was-all gubked up cleaned it and runs amazing now!!
Is the 583 the one with the ebay fuel pump? Swap it with another one to try. But first, check the impulse line between block and fuel pump. The slightest crack/leak wont let it work properly.
Always look forward to your bush sled repairs every year! Southern NH hasnt been getting enough snow these past few winters for me to dive into one. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year Jeremy!
Southern Maine is the same , every year haha. We get 8 inches and people beat the trails to grass in one day so we usually go to Pittsburgh new Hampshire
I agree with Ethan but will add a little advice. You can spray some carb clean around the clutch while its running and if the engine changes then you know you have a crank seal problem. Thats where I would start.
Might as well start with the basics with fuel, spark and compression. you already cleaned the carbs so move to spark and compression if those are both good then proceed to carb boots and reeds. I have also seen a lot of primers go bad over the years and will allow air into the fuel system causing funny issues as well. Good luck i cant wait to see the next video.
1996 arctic cat cougar 550 (7950 miles), got about $250 into it total, so far gone 121 miles. no issues so far. some rough trails so far hear in Southern Maine.
I’m pretty sure you started this RUclips channel to get free mechanical advice from all the car and engines nerds in the comment section.. for free! You’re a pretty smart guy 😉 👏
Just picked myself up an 02 zr800 efi for the winter. Bout to go get some risers for her tmrw super excited it will be my first sled I’ve purchased myself ! Runs like a top, love the vids ! Keep it up
2008 Yamaha vector just put a buddy seat on it to get my daughter out with me. Old sled was a 1996 skidoo grand touring and I miss the 2up. My older daughter bought the skidoo and won’t let me borrow it anymore :)
Its running on one cylinder, those ski doos are notorious for bad coil,my citation ss you had to carry a spair coil with you,id check the coil for sure, check both plugs see if there is spark,if there isnt on one of them, then change the right coil, there black and round,if its not the coils then put new spark plugs in it.
Any of them there sweet! Keep the videos coming! Ur missed when u don't post! Just sold rev renegade 800 to buddy at work and we get the storm of a lifetime in Buffalo ny!
Jeremy love your vids man good job I’m either riding a 2005 Yamaha phazer 500 custom and a 2002 ski doo 600 we bought for 750 bucks and was sitting for 8 years and only has 2,100 miles! Just needed carb boots so she runnin like a dream and she got a hole in her pipe so she sounds beautiful! Fixed it all by my self and I’m only 12 so keep up the good work
You can try adjusting the belt deflection on the arctic cat. You’ll have to buy some shims for the secondary clutch but you’ll have to get it off first.
Check your plugs sounds dead on one cylinder, possibly a bad wire at the cap. They unscrew make sure the wire is not broken or corroded. Shop vac on blow in your gas tank seal with a rag will usually prime the fule system. As for the clutch on the cat try a 3inch long 1/4 inch drive extension in the hole and screw the bolt back in to snug and tap with a hammer if necessary
After you check the fuel pump and impulse line, you should inspect your crank seals. I had a zl 550 that ran on one cylinder because one crank seal was shot.
Did you replace both pilot jets, 1 in each carb? Cleaning them is almost impossible and for the cost just better to replace. Same thing happened on my Mach 1 670.
Hey Jeremy regarding your Paul on your mxz I had the same prob on my 670 summit they make a metal one it has to be slightly modified but it's really easy and I haven't had a prob since just a thought
Love watching your vids.i just purchased a 2001 zrt 800.doing the waterpump upgrade, with Allen bolts, and stainless waterpump shaf.t.keep up the great work..
Try syncing the carbs, there is an air mixture screw that should be out 1 1/2 turns I did that in my buddy's jag 440 and she runs perfect now, just an idea.
Kinda sounds like you have a broken Reed valve, pull the carbs pull the boots look down into the throat of the cylinder see if you have a Reed cage, if so pull the Reed cage and inspect the metal reeds, if you do have metal reeds I recomend replacement with carbon fiber reeds they do less damage to the pistons when they break. But it's sounds like you have a cracked pedal on the chain case cylinder to me , not a fueling issue but a induction issue is what I'm hearing. Best of luck to you on your endeavor, if you find a problem with your Reed cage the I recomend you look at the piston skirts with a bore scope to inspect for damaged pistons, hope this helps 👍and then my first question truely comes into play new gas cap but is the tank clean? Seems like diag should start from the cap first th3n quality of tank conditions then fuel system performance, then induction system, then ignition system and compression and then exaust performance ie is the exaust plugged. Looking at the spark plugs can tell you what your engine is doing but allways use new plugs if your tring to do a plug read diagnoses. Threw further examination of the blow up schematics of the 583 from 97 it has a rotory valve- waterpump assembly. dennis Kirk does also have a carbon fiber replacment rotory valve for it still behind the carbs tho.
Check crank seal on the skidoo. The seal would have to have a huge chunk broke off of it to cause an issue of that magnitude, but worthwhile checking anyway
Nope ...even a slight leak at a crank seal is magnified by crankcase suction when running. I've seen them do that with one thread of a frayed belt stuck in them!
@@stevenbaker9327 Hmmm. Maybe depends on whether the side taken out also has the impulse line for the fuel pump. I have an old John Deere sled that had the clutch side seal with a huge chunk ripped out of it but it still started up and ran as the impulse line was on the mag side cylinder.
@@Ethan-ck6iz if you run them too long with a seal sucking air they'll tske out a rod bearing due to a lack of oil as it leans out the mixture on that side. I've seen a few that crapped a rod bearing shortly after the seal was replaced! Been working on these things since '68 in various service departments. Finally retired after 42 years!
This year I bought a 95 arctic cat puma on a whim for $200 seller said had 120 compression and spark new fuel lines and pickup carb cleaned and some rewiring the ign switch key busted… she rips around damn good kids love it 3 tanks full never a problem used already here in MN
2010 SkiDoo Renegade 1200 4tec. Heavy but reliable, im heavy guy and still has nice torque/power. My 2013 mxz 800 etec blew up, on trail what I usually do, im happy with the 4stroke here in Quebec. In time I will get newer gen.
The issue with the zr and the belt dragging is that seized secondary clutch. The secondary clutch needs to "float" on the jackshaft so that it can centre itself when the sled is running. If the secondary is seized then it cant float and move on the shaft properly which will cause your belt alignment to be out between your primary and secondary, this causes belt drag which is why your track is spinning like it is.
Alas, I don’t have a sled, so I’m no help. I’m just here for the commentary. 😂 And I feel like I could learn a thing or two for when I take out the carb on my KLR. 😊
Those tension springs are classic for that. If you catch it like you did you saved alot of heartache. Those drop cases arent easily replaced and a chain is 200 bucks
Jeremy check inside the tank I know you probably have but that giant brass filter that skidoo used in those sleds tends to fall off it’s possible the line is getting junk in it. Also the other thing I would do is buy a pressure tester kit on Amazon you can check the pop off pressure on each carb to see if the needles and seats are getting stuck. Being that they are probably original they may not be opening to let in enough fuel. Swap the carbs and see if the issue follows if only running on one cylinder.
Friend of mine had a very similar problem on his formula z 670. It ended up being the fuel line inside the tank was rapidly disintegrating. So quickly that the fuel was full of small chunks of fuel line which almost instantly would clog the carbs, no matter how many times we cleaned them. I think it's worth replacing every piece of fuel and impulse line you can and see if that helps.
I don't even clean the jets anymore I simply change them... Last time I tried to clean a jet it didn't work out... I knew it was the issue ! Changed the jet and... BOOM ! back to business I was ! We got hit by the same storm you had but we had it worst... No power and a lot of damaged materials and people ending up in the hospital because of carbon monoxide poisoning... Nice video !
For the last 2 years I've been running my 2004 Arctic cat f7 snow pro. Mdrp can on it roughly around 150 horsepower. Love the sled.. also have a 98 Yamaha SRX 700 triple mdrp can on it runs very well.

It has a brand new belt, spark plugs, oil, chaincase oil, and cleaned the primary and secondary. carbs also cleaned twice, any ideas whats going on? all advice is greatly appreciated
I have a indy 500 that would start just like that and run but bog because it was getting way to much fuel that it was leaking into my exhaust, the problem was a bad needle and seat in the carb. I saw the exhaust was wet near one of the ends that connects the pipe to the can so you might have to much fuel coming through. Not sure if your getting to much or not enough fuel just a suggestion.
I can’t remember if you checked this in a previous video, On my 97 670 the rubber grommet where the fuel line came out of the tank was shot and letting air in causing issues. In fact my 05 600 renegade had the same problem and my dads 94 formula stx 583 had the same. That last one actually has 2 fuel lines but only one was bad.
I’m running a 2004 RX1, awesome sled just really fast…might be too fast. My mother in law had an old 1995 skidoo SL 500 and it would start, pull over and run but as soon as you touch the throttle it would die. My mechanic helped me and told me it was a fly wheel issue because the cylinders were not timed up right. We fixed it and it ran better then any other sled. Might have to re-clock it! Was it a new fuel pump or a used one? I tend to buy rebuild kit's for mine. It could also be a vacuum hose issue from the crankcase. Do you have an air compressor available to blow out your jets? Micro drill bits are good for cleaning out the jets also.
I have a 96 ski DLL formula with the 583 and I had the same problem shortly after I got it. It really seemed like it was a fuel problem but it turned out that the stator was starting to go. It could be a stator problem for you as well.
You might have to pull the entire jackshaft out that the driven clutch is on and hold the clutch in your lap and wack the shaft out. Or have it pressed out.
Which of these two sleds would you take?
Mxz
dont like either one but zr 800 lol
Zr 800

My primary snowmobile this year is a Polaris Indy 500
Was it a new fuel pump or a used one? I tend to buy rebuild kit's for mine. It could also be a vacuum hose issue from the crankcase. Do you have an air compressor available to blow out your jets? Micro drill bits are good for cleaning out the jets also.
I have a 96 ski DLL formula with the 583 and I had the same problem shortly after I got it. It really seemed like it was a fuel problem but it turned out that the stator was starting to go. It could be a stator problem for you as well.
Yes my citation was notorious for that
The mxz almost sounds flooded. Is there a crankcase drain on those engines?
Great video keep up the great contant buddy
2018 ski do 600rs is my new sled I got this year. Quite the upgrade from a 2003 arctic cat mountain cat 900
Crank seals or carb boots??
Just got a 98 Indy 500 can’t wait for the trails to open to ride
You might have to pull the entire jackshaft out that the driven clutch is on and hold the clutch in your lap and wack the shaft out. Or have it pressed out.
