  • ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Two bears got too close for comfort on Asheville's Town Mountain this week. In one incident on Monday, a mama bear and cub climbed through a window to enter a pickup truck parked in a driveway on Crestwood Road. The truck belonged to Jake Senyo, of 2 Clean Floorcare and Restoration, who was painting a home in the neighborhood. Senyo says he made noise and the larger bear ran to the top of the driveway fairly quickly, while the cub didn't move. "The cub just kind of stared at me and we thought it was kind of discolored because it had white all over its face," said Senyo. "[It turns out] he definitely put his head straight in a paint bucket and he got it all over our truck, the inside of our truck." Eventually both bears left, Senyo says the likely climbed in the truck after smelling wrappers from a worker's already-eaten lunch. On the other side of Town Mountain, Connie Regan-Blake was in her bedroom when she heard a noise down the hall. It turned out a black bear cub had come in through a screen and was eating cat food. The bear eventually left and Buncombe County Animal Control searched the home to make sure it was gone, but Regan-Blake says she's still shaken up. "The air conditioner went on, and I jumped like that, so it's really the aftermath, so now every shadow I'm aware of." Despite this week's close encounters, county animal control says that bear activity has been pretty normal this year. They say when they respond to a call about a bear in a house or car, policy is to catch it and release it back into the woods.
